Kristin Berkey-Abbott: My Third Skin Cancer

First, let me stress that my 3?skin cancers have all been the non-life-threatening kind.? No melanomas yet.? I also feel lucky that they haven't been on my face.? I've had 2 on my left arm, the arm that hung out of the window for years while I drove under a relentless Southern sun.? And now, a basal cell cancer on my collarbone, also on the left.

There it is in the picture above, between pearl and pencil eraser.? It first appeared a few months ago.? I know the drill:? any new, mole-like thing deserves a visit to the dermatologist.? It seemed to grow, but it didn't get crusty and/or bloody.? I've had people tell me not to worry, that it's just some kind of tag-like thing, that I can expect these as I age.

I ignored these people.? Still, it was a bit of a shock when the dermatologist said, "Yep, that's a basal cell cancer."

I'm used to my dermatologist saying things like "Nope, that's a freckle."? "Nope that's just an age spot."

But occasionally, the dermatologist takes things off my skin, sends them off to be biopsied, and I come back for a bit more scraping.? As recurring medical conditions go, I could have worse problems.

It's interesting to me to see people's reactions.? Some people are horrified at the idea of a cancer of any kind.? Even if I explain that it's not life threatening, I can still see the pity on their faces.

But frankly, I've been on the lookout for skin cancer my whole life.? I'm the first generation to grow up aware of the lack of an ozone layer.? And yes, I spent years tanning anyway.

Before that, I spent my childhood being sent outside to play.? My mom was?a big believer in the values of fresh air and sunshine.

They say that one of the predictors of skin cancer is a blistering sunburn.? I can't even count the number of times I've had a blistering sunburn.? And then there are all the sunburns that didn't blister . . .

When my dermatologist first met me, he said, "Why are you living here?"? For a moment, my mind reeled at the existential questions in the dermatologist question.

But of course, he?was wondering?why?I live in a place that placed me at such risk of high exposure to dangerous UV rays.? The whole planet poses that kind of risk, of course, but the closer we get to the equator, the more days of dangerous sunshine we'll likely experience.

And I'm blonde and fair-skinned and freckled.?

So, the fact that I get skin cancers shouldn't exactly surprise anybody.? And yet, it's still a bit of a shock each time I find out that I have one.

Not so much of a shock that I can't write poems.? Tomorrow, I'll share my new poem that's based on Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess."? In case you want to play along,?I've pasted?the Robert Browning poem below.? My first?bit came to me in the parking lot after my visit with the dermatologist:?

"That?s my third cancer, lurking near my neck,"

My Last Duchess

By Robert Browning

That's my last Duchess painted on the wall,

Looking as if she were alive. I call

That piece a wonder, now: Fr? Pandolf's hands

Worked busily a day, and there she stands.

Will't please you sit and look at her? I said

'Fr? Pandolf' by design, for never read

Strangers like you that pictured countenance,

The depth and passion of its earnest glance,

But to myself they turned (since none puts by

The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)

And seemed as they would ask me, if they durst,

How such a glance came there; so, not the first

Are you to turn and ask thus. Sir, 'twas not

Her husband's presence only, called that spot

Of joy into the Duchess' cheek: perhaps

Fr? Pandolf chanced to say 'Her mantle laps

Over my lady's wrist too much,' or, 'Paint

Must never hope to reproduce the faint

Half-flush that dies along her throat:' such stuff

Was courtesy, she thought, and cause enough

For calling up that spot of joy. She had

A heart ? how shall I say ? too soon made glad,

Too easily impressed; she liked whate'er

She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.

Sir, 'twas all one! My favour at her breast,

The dropping of the daylight in the West,

The bough of cherries some officious fool

Broke in the orchard for her, the white mule

She rode with round the terrace - all and each

Would draw from her alike the approving speech,

Or blush, at least. She thanked men - good! but thanked

Somehow - I know not how - as if she ranked

My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name

With anybody's gift. Who'd stoop to blame

This sort of trifling? Even had you skill

In speech - (which I have not) - to make your will

Quite clear to such an one, and say, 'Just this

Or that in you disgusts me; here you miss,

Or there exceed the mark' - and if she let

Herself be lessoned so, nor plainly set

Her wits to yours, forsooth, and made excuse,

- E'en that would be some stooping; and I choose

Never to stoop. Oh sir, she smiled, no doubt,

Whene'er I passed her; but who passed without

Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands;

Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands

As if alive. Will't please you rise? We'll meet

The company below, then. I repeat,

The Count your master's known munificence

Is ample warrant that no just pretence

Of mine for dowry will be disallowed;

Though his fair daughter's self, as I avowed

At starting, is my object. Nay, we'll go

Together down, sir. Notice Neptune, though,

Taming a sea-horse, thought a rarity,

Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Come back tomorrow for the rest of my poem!

(AP) ? Kevin Durant scored 18 of his 36 points in a scintillating final 7 minutes, Serge Ibaka added a career-high 26 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder evened the Western Conference finals at two games apiece by beating the San Antonio Spurs 109-103 Saturday night.

After seeing his team's 15-point lead dwindle to four, Durant took over midway through the fourth quarter by scoring all 16 of the Thunder's points during a span of just over 5 minutes to keep the Spurs at bay.

With All-Star teammate Russell Westbrook limited to seven points, Durant did almost all of the damage late to send the series back to San Antonio all square for Game 5 on Monday night.

The three-time scoring champion hit three straight jumpers, the last one coming after he bumped into Tony Parker in the lane to draw a foul and set up a three-point play. Then he attacked the rim for his next three baskets, getting to the line again when he was fouled on a layup off of James Harden's alley-oop.

Durant hit another jumper after coming off a Westbrook screen for the last basket in his personal run ? and the Spurs were still within striking distance. Rookie Kawhi Leonard bracketed a pair of 3-pointers around that Durant jumper, and the Spurs were only down 102-96 with 1:24 left.

The Spurs succeeded in getting the ball out of Durant's hands on the next possession, only for him to provide the assist on Harden's 3-pointer from the left wing that bumped the lead to nine.

Durant hit two free throws in the final minute to help close it out.

Oklahoma City is trying to become the 15th team in NBA history to overcome an 0-2 deficit in a seven-game series, and the eighth to do it since 2004. The Thunder avoided an even trickier task by winning.

Only eight teams have ever overcome a 3-1 hole, and only two had done it while needing two wins on the road ? the 1995 Rockets and 1968 Celtics.

Tim Duncan had 21 points for San Antonio, which had won 20 in a row before losing Game 3. Leonard added 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Spurs wiped away most of a 15-point deficit with a run that coincided with coach Gregg Popovich turning to DeJuan Blair, who's had some notoriously big games against the Thunder but had occupied a spot on the bench for most of the playoffs after starting 62 of the 66 regular-season games.

Blair sprung free for a layup early in an 18-5 comeback, and Manu Ginobili's 3-pointer from the top of the key trimmed Oklahoma City's lead to 73-71 with 1:16 to go in the third quarter.

The Spurs were within four after Duncan's left-handed runner with 6:55 left in the game. That's when Thunder coach Scott Brooks called a timeout, and Durant came out of it firing away. He made seven of his last eight shots and also finished with eight assists and six rebounds.

Ibaka made all 11 of his shots ? and all four of his free throws ? to lead a strong performance from Oklahoma City's frontcourt while Durant's usual running mates, Westbrook and Harden, both struggled.

Ibaka, starting center Kendrick Perkins and reserve Nick Collison combined to go 22 for 25 from the field for 49 points. Westbrook missed eight of his 10 shots and Harden was limited to eight points.

The Thunder shot 56 percent and outrebounded San Antonio 41-31.

Perkins and Collison had two-handed jams during a string of 10 straight Thunder points that flipped the game late in the first quarter. Stephen Jackson stopped it with a three-point play that was originally ruled an offensive foul ? that would have been his third ? before officials conferred and ruled Collison was inside the circle and was guilty of the foul.

Ginobili followed two possessions later with a four-point play, taking advantage when Westbrook failed to get back on defense after missing a wild layup in transition.

Oklahoma City pulled right back ahead with a 12-3 run while its two All-Stars came out for a break, and Westbrook nailed a 3-pointer from the left side soon after returning to provide the Thunder's first double-digit lead at 43-33 with 4:44 to go before halftime.

Perkins had another two-handed dunk and Durant hit a jumper in the final minute of the first half to push the edge to 55-43, and Leonard's 3-pointer was a fraction after the buzzer for the Spurs. Oklahoma City shot 57.5 percent in the first half and had a 24-17 rebounding advantage.

NOTES: After committing a postseason-worst 21 turnovers in Game 3, San Antonio had 10 that led to 11 Oklahoma City points. ... Ryan Seacrest sat in the front row near midcourt.

Edwards not guilty on one count; mistrial on others

The jury delivered a unanimous verdict on one of the six felony counts and found Edwards not guilty of receiving illegal campaign contributions from heiress Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon. The judge declared a mistrial on the five other counts. Edwards later told reporters that he knew he had not done anything illegal but that he was accountable for his behavior. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

By NBC News' Michael Austin and Stacey Klein and msnbc.com's Mike Brunker

Updated at 4:34 p.m. ET -- Capping a day of dramatic turnarounds, the?jury in the campaign finance trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards found him not guilty on Thursday on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions and said it was deadlocked on the remaining five charges.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles then declared a mistrial on the remaining charges. It was not immediately clear if prosecutors intend to seek a retrial on those charges.

In a statement outside the federal courthouse in Greensboro, N.C., Edwards acknowledged that he had behaved poorly, but said he had not acted illegally.

Read Thursday's court transcript

?I want to make sure that everyone hears from me ? that while I don?t believe I did anything illegal, ?I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong and there is no one else responsible for my sins,? said Edwards, who did not testify at the trial and took no questions.

The count on which the jury?reached a?"not guilty" verdict involved contributions from?Edwards' contributor Rachel "Bunny" Mellon.

NBC station?WNCN?of Raleigh, N.C., reported that when the decision came, Edwards closed his eyes, rubbed his face and smiled at his daughter, Cate. He then hugged his daughter and?his elderly parents while whispering to them, "I told you this would be OK," WCNC reported. Earlier, the jury of eight men and four women told Eagles?that it had reached a verdict on all six felony accounts against Edwards. But after the jury returned to the courtroom, the foreperson stated?that jurors?had reached a unanimous decision on only one count.?Eagles then sent them back to the jury room to resume deliberations.

The charges against Edwards, 58,?arose while he was in the midst of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination, and were focused on about $1 million in donations?from?two wealthy donors, Fred Baron and?Mellon, a billionnaire banking heiress. The money?was used to support and?hide Edwards' pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter.

NBC News' Gabe Gutierrez reports on John Edwards' campaign finance trial after the jury found him not guilty on one count. The judge declared a mistrial on the remaining five counts. NBC News' Pete Williams, Savannah Guthrie and former prosecutor John Q. Kelly provide analysis on the case.

Prosecutors argued that the?money amounted to?illegal and unreported campaign contributions?at a time when federal?donations were capped at $2,300; the defense said?the money was a "gift" intended to allow Edwards to hide the affair from his ailing wife, Elizabeth, and the public. Elizabeth Edwards, who had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, separated from John Edwards in early 2010 and died later that year.

If found guilty of all six counts, Edwards could have faced up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.? Each individual count carries a maximum sentence of 5 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Attorneys for Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee,?and prosecutors alike painted him?as a liar and a bad husband. Where they differed was?whether the scheme to hide his affair amounted to a crime.

The jurors?were charged with deciding?if Edwards "knowingly and willfully" violated a 1971 campaign finance law by orchestrating the scheme to support and hide Hunter.

/

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has faced public and private challenges throughout his life and career.

Prosecutors alleged in their closing arguments that Edwards manipulated the campaign finance system to conceal the affair with Hunter, a videographer on his 2008 presidential campaign staff.

He "clearly knew the law and decided to violate it in order to salvage his campaign," Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Higdon said, accusing Edwards of cynically seeking to "keep her quiet" until the election was over "and his wife (had) passed away."

Lead defense attorney Abbe Lowell admitted in his closing arguments that Edwards had committed many "moral wrongs," but he insisted that none of the misdeeds was "a legal one."

"John's conduct is shameful, but it's human," Lowell told the jury.

Letters and other notes from?Mellon appeared to be crucial to the jurors' deliberations ? from their first day of discussions, they requested a stream of exhibits related to the nearly $750,000 she contributed.

Mellon, who is 101 years old, didn't testify during the trial, but her attorney and financial adviser, Alex Forger, offered extensive testimony that Mellon knew that her donations were intended to fund the "Hunter problem" and weren't given as campaign contributions.

A possible turning point came in mid-May, when Judge Eagles barred most of the defense's planned testimony from current and former members of the Federal Election Commission about a federal audit that concluded that the money didn't amount to campaign contributions subject to federal regulation.

Eagles ruled that evidence about the FEC audit was inadmissible because it couldn't be determined exactly what the commission knew or was told at the time.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie examines how the legal terrain of political campaigns has changed since John Edwards ran for president in 2008.
