ScienceDaily (July 5, 2012) ? An international team, led by Lanzhou University, comprising BGI, the world's largest genomics organization, Institute of Kunming Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as the other 12 institutes, has completed the genomic sequence and analyses of a female domestic yak, which provides important insights into understanding mammalian divergence and adaptation at high altitude.
This study was recently published online in Nature Genetics.
As an iconic symbol of Tibet and of high altitude, the yak (Bos grunniens) is the most important domesticated species for Tibetans living at high altitude in China's Qinghai Province, which could provide meat and other basic resources, such as milk, transportation, dried dung for fuel, and hides for tented accommodation. Yaks have many anatomical and physiological traits that enable them live at high altitude, including high metabolism, acute senses, impressive foraging ability, enlarged hearts and lungs, and a lack of blood vessel constriction in the lungs when faced with relatively low oxygen conditions.
In the study, researchers sequenced the genome of a female domestic yak using high-throughput sequencing technology. The genomic data yielded 2,657Mb draft yak genome assembly that had 65-fold coverage. They also conducted transcriptome sequencing on RNA samples derived from fresh heart, liver, brain, stomach, and lung tissues collected from the same yak. Based on the transcriptome data, researchers estimated that the yak genome contains 22,282 protein-coding genes and 2.2 million heterozygous SNPs.
In order to understand evolutionary adaptation of yak to the high-altitude, the team conducted the comparative genomic analyses between yak and cattle, a closely related animal that typically lives at much lower altitudes. Although the yak and cattle were estimated to have diverged around 4.9 million years ago, many of the yak and cattle genes have remained very similar, with the two animals sharing 45 percent protein identity and 99.5 percent protein similarity. However, they identified distinct gene expansions related to sensory perception and energy metabolism-related in yak.
In addition, researchers also found an enrichment of protein domains related to the extracellular environment and hypoxic stress. Especially, they found the orthologous genes in yak related to hypoxia and nutrition metabolism had undergone positively selected and rapid evolution. For example, they found three genes that may play important roles in regulating body's response to hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, at high-altitudes, and five genes that were related with the optimization of the energy from the poor foods in the extreme plateau.
Researchers referred that the study on high-altitude adaptation may help to improve current understanding, treatment, and prevention of altitude sickness and other hypoxia-related diseases in humans. Moreover, the yak genome provided a valuable resource for accelerating the genetic improvement of milk and meat production of this important animal.

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? As the Fourth of July approaches, emergency departments across the country are already beginning to treat patients injured by fireworks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, hand and finger damage are the most common injuries caused by fireworks and account for 32 percent of all injuries reported.
And that can have huge financial, social, and social media implications.
"Lately it seems people care more about material things and their ability to social network than they do about their own health," said Thomas Esposito, MD, MPH, chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Burns in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center. "Staging an awesome pyrotechnical display for your friends on YouTube may result in blowing off your thumb, ending for good your ability to communicate using a handheld device."
One report of seven states revealed that the cost of stay for those hospitalized due to a fireworks-related amputation of a finger, thumb or lower arm, was $15,600. Total costs for all fireworks-related injuries in this study was estimated at $1.4 million. Also prevalent are head and eye injuries, which account for 19 and 18 percent of total reported injuries respectively. "Fireworks are basically explosives and all are capable of causing severe injuries, but even minor injuries can cause significant functional disability when it comes to hand and eye function," said Esposito, a member of the National Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council. "Fireworks are not toys."
Fireworks that are considered legal are still very dangerous. Fireworks burn at approximately the same temperature as a household match and can cause burn injuries and ignite clothing, if used improperly. Sparklers burn at nearly 2000 degrees Fahrenheit at their center.
"Even fireworks that are classified as 'safer,' such as bottle rockets and sparklers, are responsible for some of the most serious wounds treated by emergency physicians," said Esposito, a trauma surgeon who is also a professor of surgery, at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood.
Many states have been experiencing extremely dry and hot weather. "Droughts bring an added risk of danger as sparks ignite highly combustible matter, such as grass and roofing" warns Esposito. According to the Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks, in 2010, fireworks caused an estimated 15,500 reported fires, resulting in eight civilian deaths, 60 injuries and $36 million in direct property damage.
In frustration, after years of July Fourth warnings going repeatedly unheeded, Esposito laments, " If you can't convince people to avoid the dangers by pointing out the consequences of lost body parts and sight, then maybe reverting to letting people know there's a good chance of not being able to text will promote caution. Or maybe reminding them of the fact that they would have to pay a lot to rebuild the house or garage might do some good! Common sense education just doesn't seem to work."
Here are some tips to help keep safe while celebrating Independence Day:
*If you choose to use legal fireworks, carefully read and follow all directions on the packaging.
*Plan safe activities for children. Give them glow-in-the-dark wands and noisemakers as substitutes for sparklers and firecrackers.
*Teach children about the dangers of fireworks and other explosives. Discourage children from lighting them and set a good example by never using fireworks yourself.
*If you find explosive substances around your home, call the local fire department's non-emergency line for disposal guidelines. Do not dispose of them or explode them yourself. Too many unknown factors like age, moisture levels and amount of explosive material make them dangerous and unpredictable.
*Never underestimate the inventiveness of children who sometimes try to concoct homemade devices. Keep potentially hazardous materials like lighter fluid, charcoal lighter and gasoline out of their reach.
*Never approach a firework device after it has been lighted, even if it appears to have gone out. It is likely to still be excessively hot and may explode unexpectedly.
*Consider safe alternatives for celebrations. Check the newspapers for community fireworks displays handled by professionals or hold a celebration at home where you can supervise your children's holiday festivities.
*If an injury occurs, call 911 or the local emergency phone number. Get immediate medical aid from experts who specialize in treating burns and other traumatic injuries.
* Make sure any area where firework debris may land is not dry and drought-ridden.
* Keep fire extinguishers and water hoses near at hand BUT always call 911 immediately if a fire starts.
Loyola University Medical Center Level 1 trauma and burn physicians have treated fireworks-related injuries over the years including dismemberments, loss of sight and hearing, third-degree burns, fractures, lacerations, permanent scarring and death. As a Level 1 trauma center, Loyola is equipped to provide comprehensive emergency medical services using multidisciplinary treatment and specialized resources to patients suffering traumatic injuries -- car and motorcycle crashes, stabbings, athletic injuries and falls.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Convicted crack dealer DeWayne Wilkerson would be in prison until 2015 if not for changes in Michigan's controversial "mandatory minimum" laws. Instead he has made a film.
"The Greatest Gift 2.0," which Wilkerson began working on after his 2009 release, premiered last weekend at one of Detroit's largest churches and is booked for several other screenings in coming weeks.
It all started in 1996, when Wilkerson was a 26-year-old independent hip hop concert promoter who was moonlighting by peddling crack 30 miles south of Detroit in Monroe, Michigan.
One day in late June, he sold to one regular buyer three times in eight hours. The man turned out to be a police informant, and Wilkerson was later convicted and sentenced to five years for each transaction: 15 years "for a day's worth of work," he says.
As a small child in Memphis, he loved music. Wilkerson, who is black, did not let his complexion stop him from wanting "to be Elvis." The third of five children, he and his siblings moved throughout the Midwest with their mother after she and their father, a drug addict, split up. Eventually, Verastine Yancey got the struggling family to Monroe, and she took a job at a General Motors Cadillac plant in Detroit.
During the 1980s, when rock cocaine rocked his hometown along I-75, a frequent drug pipeline stretching from Florida to Michigan, dope money bought a teenage Wilkerson designer clothes and expensive sneakers.
But he often battled with his religious mother about the path he had chosen. He nearly missed his high school graduation after getting arrested on the eve of the ceremony.
Hip hop would reawaken his desire to work in music, but the drug scene competed for Wilkerson's attention. At 18, he was shot after sticking "a pistol in a dope fiend's mouth because he owed me some money," he said. At 23, his spleen was removed when he was shot again.
Later, when he was a hip hop promoter, trafficking helped Wilkerson snag Biggie Smalls, the world-famous rapper he brought to Monroe in 1995; California's Too Short was booked for Monroe and Detroit shows. But after once losing $21,000 on a single show when he could not fill a concert venue, illegal cash became insurance.
"I called myself using the game," says Wilkerson, 42, "but it used me."
After starting the mandatory minimum sentence for drug trafficking and other offenses, his creative drive returned, this time in the form of storytelling. His mother bought him a primer on screenwriting, and he taught himself the ropes in his state prison cell in Detroit.
Using lessons that he believed would inspire youth to choose more wisely than he had, he wrote and rewrote "The Greatest Gift 2.0" for seven years.
"I believe that you can bend the universe to the way you want it go," says Wilkerson, 42.
The 70-minute drama, which Wilkerson compares with the Oscar-winning "Crash," with its urban characters at crossroads of life, was inspired by an unlikely source that came to him on his black-and-white prison cell TV.
"I was watching George Burns' 'Oh God! You Devil,' and I thought, ?What if there was a serious film with hip hop swagger, about good versus evil?'" said Wilkerson.
After his prison release, Wilkerson researched companies through the Michigan Film Office, finding Captive 8 Productions' Brion Dodson.
"He said, ?We don't know what we're doing, we don't know how to hold a camera, but we got this script,'" says Dodson. "He was totally honest. I could tell he was a straight-up guy."
With financial help from Wilkerson's mother and actors who agreed to perform solely for screen credit, the pair cut corners to produce a film that Dodson says would normally cost $300,000.
Wilkerson says he will use "The Greatest Gift 2.0," which contains no profanity, as part of a "youth motivational package," ideally with corporate backing. Greater Grace Temple church hosted Friday's premiere for 500 children, Detroit officials and local celebrities.
"This presentation can be a powerful tool," says Greater Grace Bishop Charles H. Ellis III. "It takes a look at real issues in a way that really speaks to the heart of young people, and challenges them to consider consequences of their actions."
Wilkerson also held a screening in Monroe over the weekend and plans other appearances before church and community audiences there as well as in Columbus, Ohio; Topeka, Kansas; and Denver.
He says the film represents his second chance.
"I'm the impossible," he said. "I've got six felonies ... In my mind, I'm the success that society says can't happen."

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? Researchers from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) are applying stereoscopic 3D to record exercises on offside position for the FIFA to use as teaching material in professional training courses for assistant referees.
The objective of this innovation project is to improve the learning environment of the assistant referees with multimedia materials which offer a visual experience that is the most similar to what referees on the pitch experience, and which can train visual perception in decision-making calls on off-side plays. For that purpose, researchers in the UC3M Television-Film group: memory, representation and industry (TECMERIN) are using this 3D recording technique for the F?d?ration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to use as teaching material in its training courses for assistant referees, within the framework of referee professional training and development all over the world.
Over the course of two days, the TECMERIN research group recorded 500 simulations of off-side plays in stereoscopic 3D with different types of exercises, similar to those used in professional training courses for International FIFA referees. "Among these, those most appropriate to create interactive material to be used by assistant referees all over the world will be chosen," UC3M professor Manuel Armenteros, coordinator of the project, explained. "The use of stereoscopic images will significantly improve the learning experience due to the fact that a 3D stereoscopic image learning environment generates a visual experience that is much more realistic than 2D," he asserted.
What are stereoscopic images?
The technique of creating stereoscopic images uses two lenses, one for each eye, which obtain a greater sense of depth than 2D images. The visual perceptive systems use the differences between the images of each eye to calculate depth.
In spite of the fact that stereoscopic 3D technology has been used for years, this technology could not have attained its current widespread use if it had not been for digital treatment of images. The stereoscopic 3D revolution is linked to the digital revolution, the researchers note. The overlapping of the two images necessary for the creation of stereoscopic images issimplified with the use of a computer, which eliminates the imperfections of previous techniques.
The spread of stereoscopic 3D into the domestic area, including recording as well as visualization devices, portends a visual environment which represents a significant advance in the creation of images, as important as that of color, according to Professor Armenteros. Stereoscopic 3D will also influence in narrative aspects, so that a thorough reflection upon its use becomes of essence in the professional as well as the academic environment, explained UC3M professor, Anto J. Ben?tez, another of the researchers participating in this research project.
