Obama Emerging As Key Figure In Virginia Senate Race

RICHMOND, Va. -- The dominant figure in a Virginia Senate race that could determine the direction of Congress next year is President Barack Obama even though both candidates are former governors well-known to voters.

Republican George Allen is trying to redeem his political career and win back the Senate seat he lost six years ago in a chaotic, slur-stained campaign against Democrat Jim Webb. His simple strategy: If Obama falls, Democrat Tim Kaine falls with him.

Kaine was Obama's hand-picked chairman of the Democratic National Committee for two years. Their fates in November are linked in a state that both parties consider critical to winning the White House and controlling the Senate.

That makes Virginia the perfect spending target for big-spending political groups on each party's side, a chance to bag two opponents at once using the same dollars. As go Obama and Republican Mitt Romney in the president race, so go Kane and Allen.

Allen denies Kaine even the Virginia courtesy of addressing those who've held their office as "governor," calling him instead "Chairman Kaine," a derisive reference to his two years as head of the Democratic Party, one of them during his final year as governor. An Allen billboard in rural areas is even blunter: "Obama's senator, not Virginia's."

"Look, for a quarter of his term as governor, he took on the most partisan job in our country," Allen said in a telephone interview. "He was President Obama's hand-picked chairman, and he's been an advocate for all the significant agenda items of the Obama administration."

Kaine has never tried to disown Obama, though they disagree on several issues. He chafes at assertions by Allen and others that the two are joined at the hip.

"It is not surprising that George is doing that," Kaine said in a telephone interview. "The last thing George wants to do is talk about the fact that he was a U.S. senator and he has a record as a U.S. senator and what that record was."

Obama's drop in popularity over his health care law, stimulus package and clean-air initiatives despised by Virginia's coal industry have made the link to the president tougher for Kaine.

"Everyone has a fantasy," said Virginia-based Republican strategist Christopher J. LaCivita. "Tim Kaine's fantasy is not to be associated with Barack Obama."

Tying Kaine to Obama is a good Republican strategy unless Romney flops in Virginia, said Steve Jarding of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Polling by Quinnipiac University in early June showed Obama with a 5 percentage point lead over Romney in Virginia and Kaine and Allen deadlocked.

"If Obama loses big, there's probably no way Kaine can win, and vice versa ? if Obama wins big, there's probably no way George Allen can win," said Jarding, a Democratic consultant.

Kaine's and Obama's hopes hinge largely on big turnouts by women and minorities. One-fifth of Virginia's electorate is black, and among that group, 9 out of 10 voted for Obama in 2008. Democrats hold an advantage among female voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll of Virginia in June. Obama led Romney by 16 percentage points among women, and Kaine led Allen by 6 points.

Maine independent King could become key player in U.S. Senate

BRUNSWICK, Maine (Reuters) - It has been nearly a decade since Angus King finished his second term as Maine's governor, loaded his family into a recreational vehicle and set off on a 5 1/2-month road trip across America, his presumed farewell to politics.

Now, at 68, King not only is back in politics, he may become an unlikely power broker in the divided U.S. Senate after the November 6 elections.

King, a soft-spoken, motorcycle-riding independent, is favored to win the Senate seat being vacated by moderate Republican Olympia Snowe, who in announcing her retirement in February said she was fed up with partisan gridlock in the Senate after more than 17 years there.

For King - who polls indicate is perhaps the most popular political figure in Maine - Snowe's grim assessment of the Capitol became a calling. King told Reuters that he would not have returned to public life if Snowe had not been so emphatic in her disappointment about the state of the Senate.

"Her reason for not running is my sole motivation to run," King said. "When I left as governor, I figured I'd never again run for anything."

President Barack Obama's Democrats now hold the Senate, 53-47. But with one-third of the chamber's seats up for election, Republicans have an opportunity to close the gap. If Republicans can gain two or three seats and King can hold off Democratic and Republican challengers, he could be in position to determine which party would control a divided Senate in 2013.

King is widely viewed as conservative on fiscal issues and more liberal on social matters such as abortion rights, which he supports.

He said he wants to dive into the ugly mess that Congress has become because he believes that most Americans, unlike many of their elected lawmakers, are solidly in the political middle and desperate for more lawmakers willing to compromise like him.

"It sounds corny, but I feel that I have an obligation to at least try," he said after a recent pair of campaign events that drew hundreds of backers of various political stripes. "I may be at the right place at the right time."

A MIX OF POLITICAL HEROES

At a time when political moderates such as Snowe are disappearing in Washington, King - who made millions in the alternative energy business and once was a popular host on public television in Maine - is a bipartisan throwback.

Pictures of two disparate political icons, former Republican president Ronald Reagan and former Democratic senator Robert Kennedy, hang side by side in King's campaign headquarters. King recently added the picture of a third: Margaret Chase Smith.

Smith was a moderate Republican from Maine whose more than three decades in Congress were highlighted by a 1950 Senate speech in which she gave a blistering critique of Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy's hunt for communists.

Like Reagan, Smith was bold on defense: In the early 1960s she pressed President John Kennedy to be willing to use nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union, prompting Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to call Smith "the devil in disguise of a woman."

King said he wants to encourage an end to the no-compromise sentiment that has hung over stalemates on government spending and debt during the last two years.

Congress' approval ratings have fallen to record lows as warring lawmakers have pushed the United States to the brink of a government shutdown and an unprecedented default on the nation's debt. At the same time, they have failed to agree on plans to either create jobs or deal with the deficit through government spending cuts and tax increases.

"We can't get to the jobs issue if the Senate doesn't work," King said. "We can't get to the debt and deficit, if the Senate doesn't work."

DEMOCRATS SEE AN ALLY

So what does Angus King stand for, and which party might he side with if he is elected?

King is coy on the latter, but Republican and Democratic leaders believe he would side with Democrats.

Two decades ago, King left the Democratic Party to make an independent run for governor in Maine, a state where progressive and blue-collar voters combine to form an electorate that is not particularly Democratic or Republican.

In the 2000 White House race, King voted for Republican George W. Bush, impressed by Bush's vow to be a "compassionate conservative." In 2004, a disappointed King said he voted for Bush's Democratic challenger, John Kerry.

Now King backs Obama, as well as the president's healthcare overhaul that is being challenged before the U.S. Supreme Court - and that has been a target for Republicans.

King declines to give his stance on the tax cuts passed during Bush's administration that are due to expire at the end of the year unless Congress renews them.

Republicans want to renew the cuts for those at all income levels; Obama and his fellow Democrats favor extending the cuts only for families earning less than $250,000 annually.

Without embracing either position, King says, "The tax structure must be reformed to lower rates, close loopholes and ensure that everyone is paying their fair share."

As for reducing the record U.S. debt, which now tops $16 trillion, King says in a position paper that "all options must be on the table." He expressed interest in ideas proposed by a commission headed by former Republican Senator Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, a chief of staff to Democratic President Bill Clinton.

In 2010, the Simpson-Bowles panel called for a mix of spending cuts and tax increases to trim the debt by $4 trillion over a decade. Obama declined to embrace the plan and it ran aground, although the concept is gaining new momentum as Congress faces a "fiscal cliff" of expiring tax cuts and mandatory reductions in spending that could slam the economy.

National Democratic leaders' confidence that King would side with them seems evident in their limited support of Cynthia Dill, a civil rights lawyer and Maine state senator who is the Democrat opposing King. Also in the race is Republican Charles Summers, Maine's secretary of state.

King said he won't decide which party he would caucus with in Washington until he is elected.

Jennifer Duffy of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report said that "the conventional wisdom seems to hold that King would caucus with Democrats. But he is unpredictable, and the conventional wisdom could be dead wrong."

A recent poll indicated that 50 percent of Maine voters favored King in the Senate race, compared with 23 percent for Summers and 9 percent for Dill.

King's popularity stems from his record as governor, when he backed measures to upgrade schools, improve care for the elderly and trim regulations on businesses.

His support comes from Maine's sizable political middle, and he draws criticism from both ends of the political spectrum.

Conservatives denounce King as a big-spending liberal who, as governor, headed a costly expansion of access to healthcare. Some liberals, meanwhile, remain angry at King because he vetoed an increase in the state's minimum wage.

Some critics dismiss King as a has-been.

"He's a nice guy, but I think he peaked," said Maine Republican Party Chairman Charles Webster.

King rejects such criticism but declines to fight back with negative campaign ads. His campaign is advised by what he calls a "tri-partisan" advisory board - three Democrats, three Republicans and three independents.

At a recent rally in Augusta, King criticized the dysfunction in the Democrat-led U.S. Senate.

"I'm neither arrogant enough or naive enough to think I can go to Washington by myself and fix this," King said. "But I do think that there are some ways that I can be a precipitator, the pebble in the pond that starts the ripple of serious change."

The crowd of a few hundred people, from college students to retirees, roared its approval.

King said his election could send a message to both parties that more people like him may be coming to Washington.

"I'm their worst nightmare," King said. "Ten of me would be a really bad nightmare. I'm unaligned and unencumbered."

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Jurors in Jerry Sandusky's child sex abuse trial listened again Friday to testimony from a key prosecution witness against the former Penn State assistant football coach, then went back behind closed doors for a second day of deliberations.

The jury had talked for more than eight hours Thursday before adjourning at the end of a long session that featured dueling portrayals of Sandusky as a "predatory pedophile" or the victim of a conspiracy between investigators and his accusers.

They started their second day by rehearing testimony given by another Penn State assistant, Mike McQueary, about an unknown boy alleged assaulted by Sandusky inside a football facility shower.

The jurors took copious notes, appearing to pay close attention to McQueary's statement that he did not see penetration, but did see a boy pressed up against a wall with Sandusky behind him.

Jurors also reheard the testimony of a McQueary family friend, Dr. Jonathan Dranov, who said that McQueary told him a different version of the story that didn't include the then-graduate assistant seeing sexual contact.

However, McQueary testified that he hadn't told Dranov all that he saw.

As attorneys read the testimony from transcripts, Sandusky paid close attention while his wife, Dottie, sat behind him. It was the first time Dottie Sandusky heard the testimony, because she wasn't present when the two men took the stand.

Sandusky is accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, using his charity for at-risk youth, The Second Mile, as a source of victims who would be dazzled by gifts, grateful for his attention and ? perhaps most importantly ? unlikely to speak up.

Sandusky has repeatedly denied the allegations. The defense portrayed him as the hapless victim of a conspiracy to convict him of heinous crimes. They explain the 48 charges against him as the result of an investigatory team out for blood and accusers who willingly played along in hopes of securing a big payday.

Shortly after the jury began deliberations Thursday, attorneys for Sandusky's 33-year-old adopted son, Matt, dropped a bombshell, saying he'd been abused by the former coach and had been prepared to testify against him if called to the stand.

Sequestered during deliberations, the jury was under orders from Judge John Cleland to ponder only the case placed in their hands.

The jury heard from eight accusers who claim Sandusky engaging in sexual contact ranging from kissing and fondling to forced oral or anal sex.

One testified he felt at times like Sandusky's son, at others his "girlfriend."

A second accuser ? a foster child at the time authorities say he was abused ? said Sandusky threatened he would never see his biological family again if he told anyone he was forced to perform sex acts but later took it back and claimed to love him.

One accuser testified to receiving what he called "creepy love letters" from Sandusky. "I know that I have made my share of mistakes," read one handwritten note. "However, I hope that I will be able to say that I cared. There has been love in my heart."

The defense said the longwinded letters were simply the manifestation of a personality disorder characterized by excessive emotionality and attention seeking.

Two people who prosecutors say were sexually abused by Sandusky haven't been identified. McQueary's testimony is the basis for charges involving one of those alleged victims.

It was also McQueary's testimony that touched off the massive scandal that rocked Penn State and forced a re-examination of the role of college administrators in reporting abuse allegations.

Sandusky has denied the allegations, but did not testify in his own defense. Jurors are aware, however, of the denials he gave "Rock Center" just after his arrest. In it, Sandusky seemed to stumble at times and struggled to give direct answers to questions about his conduct.

Asked if he was sexually attracted to boys, Sandusky told NBC's Bob Costas: "Sexually attracted, you know, I, I enjoy young people. I, I love to be around them. ... No, I'm not sexually attracted to young boys."

Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan III seized on that in closing arguments, saying: "I would think that the automatic response, if someone asks you if you're a criminal, a pedophile, a child molester, or anything along those lines, would be: 'You're crazy. No. Are you nuts?'"

Prosecutors said Sandusky used gifts and the allure of Penn State's vaunted football program to attract and abuse vulnerable boys who came from troubled homes, often ones without a father figure in the house.

"What you should do is come out and say to the defendant that he molested and abused and give them back their souls," McGettigan told jurors. "I give them to you. Acknowledge and give them justice."

Defense attorney Joe Amendola argued that Sandusky was targeted by investigators who coached accusers into making false claims about a generous man whose charity gave them much-needed love.

"So out of the blue (after) all these years, when Jerry Sandusky is in his mid-50s, he decides to become a pedophile? Does that make sense to anybody?" Amendola asked rhetorically.

The jury, which includes nine people with ties to Penn State, had already begun deliberating when Matt Sandusky's attorneys issued a statement alleging that his father abused him.

"During the trial, Matt Sandusky contacted us and requested our advice and assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sandusky's abuse," Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici said in the statement. "At Matt's request, we immediately arranged a meeting between him and the prosecutors and investigators.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy. There will be no further comment."

Matt Sandusky went to live with Sandusky and his wife as a foster child and was adopted by them as an adult. He is one of Jerry Sandusky's six adopted children.

Shortly after Jerry Sandusky's arrest, Matt Sandusky's ex-wife went to court to keep her former father-in-law away from their three young children. Jill Jones successfully obtained a restraining order forbidding the children from sleeping over at their grandparents' home.

Around the same time, details emerged that Matt Sandusky had attempted suicide just four months after first going to live with the couple in 1995. He had come into the home through The Second Mile.

Shortly after the suicide attempt, Sandusky's probation officer wrote, "The probation department has some serious concerns about the juvenile's safety and his current progress in placement with the Sandusky family," according to court records supplied to The Associated Press by his birth mother, Debra Long.

Despite those concerns, probation and child welfare officials recommended continued placement with the Sandusky family, and the judge overseeing his case agreed.

During testimony last week, an accuser known as Victim 4 said Matt Sandusky was living at the Sandusky home at the time he stayed there overnight and testified that Jerry Sandusky came into the shower with the two boys and "started pumping his hand full of soap." Matt Sandusky shut off the shower and left, appearing nervous, the witness said.

On Friday, three of Matt Sandusky's siblings ? Jeffrey Sandusky, Jon Sandusky and Kara Werner ? were in court with their parents.

Another son, Ray Sandusky, who lives in Brentwood, Tenn., said he had no comment and closed the door on an Associated Press reporter.

A sixth Sandusky child, E.J., could not be located by the AP on Friday.
