When Google's Algorithms Don't Index Your Content

Google Index AlgorithmA Google Webmaster Help thread has one webmaster upset that his index count, compared to the number of pages submitted via his sitemap file is continuously going down, as opposed to up.

One of the best ways to see how many pages Google has indexed of your web site is to upload an XML Sitemap file and compare the URLs submitted to the URLs indexed. If that count is close, that is a good thing. If the number of URLs indexed continues to go up, that is a good thing. If that number continuously goes down, there is likely a problem.

So this webmaster wanted to know what the problem was and Gary Illyes from Google explained that Google's algorithms don't want to index many of the pages. He wrote:

As we improve our algorithms, they may decide to not reindex pages that are likely to be not useful for the users. I took a look on the pages that were once indexed but currently aren't and it appears there are quite a few that have no real content.

He showed examples of pages that are soft 404s (it says page not found but returns a 200 status code in the http header). He also showed examples of blank pages being index. Also, he showed examples of URLs in the Sitemap that is referencing URLs that are not canonical.

Healthy sites, need health URLs, content, redirects and proper http header responses. Otherwise, Google may stop indexing and worse, crawling the URLs.

First world atlas on renewable energy launched

By Agence France-Presse
Sunday, January 13, 2013 15:24 EST

?

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on Sunday launched the world?s first atlas on clean energy which will offer open-access information on countries? renewable energy potential.

?The Global Atlas is the largest ever initiative to help countries assess their renewable energy potential, and companies bringing together data and maps from leading technical institutes and private companies worldwide,? IRENA said.

?It currently charts solar and wind resources, and will expand to other forms of renewable energy over 2013 and 2014,? the agency announced as it began its two-day annual general assembly in Abu Dhabi.

The online atlas is available on www.irena.org/GlobalAtlas

IRENA said the atlas will also help companies looking to invest in new markets.

?Over the next decade, we expect an enormous increase in investment in the field of renewable energy. Global Atlas will help us make the right decisions,? said Danish Climate and Energy Minister Martin Lidegaard, who chaired a session at the gathering.

IRENA director Adnan Amin said that by 2014 the atlas will include information on bio-energy, geothermal energy and marine energy.

?The Global Atlas provides a powerful new tool in international efforts to double the world?s share of renewable energy by 2030? to around 30 percent of the global energy mix, he said.

Thirty-seven countries, including Israel which has no diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, have so far contributed information on their renewable energy potentials to the atlas.

Established in 2011, Abu Dhabi-based IRENA is mandated by 159 countries and the European Union to promote the sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy.

Its meeting comes as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week which includes the Future Energy Summit, the International Water Summit and the International Renewable Energy Conference.

Greece: Shots fired at ruling party HQ

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? A gunman fired a spray of bullets at the headquarters of Greece's governing center-right New Democracy party near central Athens early Monday, with one hitting an office occasionally used by the prime minister, officials said. No one was hurt.

A government spokesman said the shooting was part of an effort to "terrorize" Greek society, which is struggling through its worst financial crisis in two generations amid a drastic fall in living standards and a record rise in unemployment.

Police cordoned off the area where unknown gunman shot at least nine automatic rifle rounds at the building on the capital's busy Syngrou Avenue, south of the city center.

No group claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn attack, which follows a renewed wave of low-scale politically motivated violence by small anarchist and far-left militants.

The belt-tightening, amid widespread disgust with an incompetent and often corrupt political establishment blamed for the country's woes, has boosted extremists both to the left and right of the political spectrum. A fringe ultra-right group accused of fostering violent attacks on dark-skinned immigrants is represented in Parliament and regularly polls as the country's third most popular party.

All political parties condemned Monday's attack.

"No act of terrorism is going to scare us," said Makis Voridis, a spokesman for New Democracy. "Our efforts to restore law and order ... will continue unobstructed."

His comments appeared to be a reference to recent police evacuations of anarchist squats in Athens, which triggered a series of firebomb attacks on journalists' homes, local branches of parties in Greece's governing coalition and cash machines.

Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said a "symbolic" bullet went through the window of the office used occasionally by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and was found inside the room.

"There is a new worrying increase in efforts to terrorize our society," Kedikoglou said.

No party officials were in the building at the time. The official prime minister's office is at another building in central Athens, where he spends most of his time.

"Of course there could have been (victims). There could have been a cleaner in the prime minister's office or a security guard at the site," Kedikoglou said.

Police said the attacker was believed to have had at least one accomplice, while experts were examining a car found abandoned and burned near the scene. The anti-terrorism squad is heading the investigation.

New Democracy heads a three-party coalition government formed after elections in June and is leading Greece's painful economic recovery effort to cut its high public debt and budget deficit through deeply resented spending cuts and tax hikes.

The austerity measures were demanded by international creditors in exchange for the vital bailout loans that have shielded Greece from bankruptcy since May 2010.

For decades, Greece was plagued by deadly far-left political violence that targeted police, government officials, businessmen and financial institutions. But the toughest groups were eradicated in a crackdown just before the 2004 Athens Olympics, and over the past three years authorities have arrested more than two dozen people over attacks by militant anarchists that caused extensive damage but no loss of life.

After authorities cleared two squats in Athens last week, the homes of five prominent journalists were firebombed. The attacks were claimed by small anarchist groups that accused their targets of serving the establishment.

Over the weekend, arsonists targeted the home of the brother of government spokesman Kedikoglou. The unknown attackers broke down the door with a sledgehammer and threw in a firebomb that exploded without causing injury.

Cougar Hunting Seasons to Close Jan. 15 in Several Areas of Washington

Cougar Hunting Seasons to Close Jan. 15 in Several Areas of Washington

Cougar hunts in several areas of the state will close at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 15 after harvest guidelines for the animals were reached in those areas, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today.?

Game Management Units (GMUs) that will close include 105, 108, 111, 117, 121, 145, 149, 154, 157, 162, 163, 166, 175, 178, 328, 329, 335, 642, 648, and 651.?

Those GMUs are located in Stevens, Pend Oreille, Garfield, Asotin, Walla Walla, Columbia, Kittitas, Chelan, Grays Harbor, Mason and Thurston counties.

Dave Ware, WDFW game manager, said this season?s cougar hunts are the first under a new management plan, approved by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission early last year.?

The new plan establishes harvest guidelines for specific areas of the state, based on cougar populations in those areas, said Ware. Under the plan, WDFW can close areas where cougar harvest meets or exceeds guidelines, while continuing to allow for hunting opportunities elsewhere.

?The goal is to preserve a variety of cougar age classes in numerous areas throughout the state, particularly older animals which tend to be more effective at maintaining sustainable populations,? Ware said. ?Going into this season we expected to have to close some areas, but even with these closures most of the state remains open for hunters.?

Ware reminds hunters that during the late-season cougar hunt ? Jan. 1 through March 31 ? other areas of the state could close early. Before going afield, hunters should check WDFW?s website at?http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/cougar/?or call the cougar hunting hotline (1-866-364-4868) to check which areas of the state remain open.

Any additional closures will be posted on the website and hotline, both of which will be updated weekly.
