Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker is stepping down as chief executive officer of the cancer group in favor of an as-yet-undefined new management role, according to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
The move is part of a management shakeup announced Wednesday by the world?s largest breast-cancer charity that also saw President Elizabeth Thompson resign and two board members give up their seats.
Ms. Brinker said she will assume a new position after Komen has filled the CEO and president posts and hired a chief operating officer, which it has lacked since 2009. In a statement, the charity said the founder?s new job will focus on ?revenue creation, strategy, and global growth.?
Ms. Brinker said the shakeup, which follows the recent departure of several high-ranking Komen executives, is not related to the flap earlier this year over the group?s suspension of grants to Planned Parenthood. The policy, since reversed, generated a firestorm of protest and has been blamed for declining attendance and fundraising at Komen?s signature Race for the Cure events.
?It?s not cleaning house, it?s an evolution,? she said of her transition and Ms. Thompson?s departure.
