Shopping and Product Reviews: The Fastest Way To Earn Extra Cash

Making money has never come easy in America or anywhere else in the world for that matter. It requires waking up early, working hard everyday, and finding the energy to get up and do it all over again the next day. People spend 8 to 10 hours a day at work, five days a week and over three hundred days. After all that hard work people still seem to be short on cash for their personal use. People could always use the extra cash to spend on vacations, new technology, clothes, shoes, and whatever else they decide to purchase.

When people are short on cash it could be difficult to buy all these items. So how do you go about earning extra cash? Well there are plenty of ways. One great way to earn extra cash in a short amount of time would be to organize a garage sale in the front yard. What do you have to lose? Go around your house to search for items that you don't use anymore and set-up a garage sale. Garage sales are easy to conduct and it could end up in a huge success for everybody involved.

It is also important to get the whole family involved when setting up a garage sale. It could turn into a lot of fun for the entire family. It will give the family a chance to spend quality time with one another. It will also teach kids how a business works, effective negotiation tactics, and how to interact with customers. Have the kids choose items that they no longer use and sell them. Just make sure that they don't clean out their entire room and sell all of their belongings.

In order to make sure that the garage sale is a success it is important to advertise effectively. Create signs and hang them up around the neighborhood. The Internet is also a great place to advertise your garage sale. Use websites such as Craigslist to inform people that you're going to have a garage sale. Just remember to not sell anything that has sentimental value to you or your family. Items with sentimental value cannot be bought for any amount of money. So, for those who want to sell an item that holds sentimental value to them should think twice before doing so.

Another way to earn extra cash in a short amount of time would be to go to the local pawnshop and sell your old jewelry. Just remember that you are allowed to bargain with them. You should know what your jewelry is worth so demand a price and do not go any lower. If the pawnshop pricing is not willing to negotiate with you remember that you can always take your jewelry to a diamond buyer. They usually have a set price, but you might be able to sell it for more money than at the pawnshop. Whatever path you decide to choose they will both earn you extra cash in a short amount of time.

NYSE Internet Outage - Business Insider

UPDATE:?NYSE CEO?Duncan Niederauer was just talking on CNBC from the floor of the exchange.

Niederauer told CNBC reporter Bob Pisani that the NYSE is taking measures to mitigate the phone and internet service issues:

Cell phone usage is pretty spotty for all of us down here in lower Manhattan right now. Also, some of the internet connections are kind of slow, so if people use that for some of their data feeds, that's slow.

So, we've actually been giving each of the brokers one of our own lines so they can get incoming and make outgoing calls if they have a phone issue.

Some people's Blackberrys aren't working. Depending on your internet service provider, you've got internet. So, I think we're trying to cover them with as much phone and data help as we can to help them run their business from down here.

Then, I'll give you guys another update after the opening.

ORIGINAL:?Bloomberg TV reporter Alix Steel was just down at the NYSE, and she said that although the floor is open today, traders will still face a nasty inconvenience left over from Hurricane Sandy:

I was just inside the New York Stock Exchange. Traders are trickling in from everywhere from Long Island to New Jersey.

But the real problem is right now there is no Verizon service or wifi in the exchange. The exchange itself is up and running, but the guys are basically trading blind. Their Bloomberg terminals are down. They don't have internet access. One trader told me there's not going to be that much action going on down on the floor today.

Steel noted, however, that this is the last day of the month, and traders are saying there should be some volatility as big funds rebalance their portfolios and log monthly gains (or losses).

Two Comets Visible Together Today: How to Watch Online

Two comets are passing through the inner solar system and you can see both cosmic wanderers in the same telescope view today (Oct. 23) in a rare celestial treat.

The two icy wanderers are comet 168P/Hergenrother, which has been going through some major outbursts in recent weeks, and comet C/2012 J1 (Catalina), which won't pass through the inner solar system again for the next 200 years. By a fluke of celestial mechanics, the two comets can be seen in the same telescope view, setting the stage for today's online sky show.

The online Slooh Space Camera will provide a free live stream of comets 168P/Hergenrother and C/2012 J1 (Catalina) through its robotic telescopes during a 30-minute sky show that begins at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT).

"It?s comet fiesta time for astronomers ? and the public," said astronomer Bob Berman, a Slooh commentator with Astronomy Magazine. "Here, Slooh will simultaneously watch two comets as they dramatically zoom in opposite directions in the same field of view!"

Slooh president Patrick Paolucci and outreach coordinator Paul Cox will also participate in today's webcast.

You can watch the comet webcast live on Slooh's website here: http://www.slooh.com

It will also be carried on this SPACE.com page at the event's start time.

Comet 168P/Hergenrother was first discovered in 1998 by astronomer Carl Hergenrother. The comet makes a trip around the sun once every 6.9 years. In the last six weeks, the comet has gone through a number of outbursts, making it an attractive target for amateur astronomers. It made its closest approach to the sun on Oct. 1. [Amazing Comet Photos from Earth and Space]

Comet C/2012 J1 (Catalina) is a more recent celestial discovery. Astronomer A.R, Gibbs spotted the comet as part of the ongoing Catalina Sky Survey on May 13 of this year. Unlike 168P/Hergenrother, comet C/2012 J1 (Catalina) is a stable target that is gradually brightening as it makes its way toward its closest approach to the sun on Dec. 7. It is known as a "hyperbolic comet" and will not pass through the inner solar system for another 200 years, Slooh officials said.

Today, two comets will appear within 43.5 arc minutes of each other. There are 60 arc minutes in one degree used to measure object locations in the night sky. Your closed fist held out at arm's length can cover about 10 degrees of the sky.

Slooh officials said members of the website have been using Slooh telescopes to track the two comets regularly in recent days. The celestial line-up that places both comets in the same telescope field of view was first identified by Slooh member Maynard Pittendreig, officials said.

Editor's Note: If you snap an amazing photo of comets 168P/Hergenrother, C/2012 J1 (Catalina) or any other skywatching target, and would like to share it for a possible story or image gallery, send images, comments and location info to SPACE.com managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

Backup strep throat testing may be unnecessary

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors don't need to double-check the results of a negative strep throat test because any missed cases typically don't result in additional health problems for patients, according to a new study.

Researchers found that among people with strep throat symptoms, an initial in-office test failed to detect the bacterial infection six percent of the time - but those oversights didn't lead to complications from the infection.

The findings support recent recommendations from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) that for adult patients, doctors can rely on the rapid test results alone to make treatment decisions.

"Though I'm confident in our review of the data to say we aren't allowing serious diseases to go untreated, it's reassuring that there were no severe (complications) in persons who had a negative rapid test, but had a positive (secondary) test" in this study, said Dr. Chris Van Beneden, an epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who helped develop the IDSA guidelines.

Many doctors still send out throat swabs for backup testing after an initially negative result. Double-checking office results using a more involved DNA test is also a standard recommendation of the Joint Commission, a healthcare accreditation organization.

The Joint Commission does, however, allow doctors to opt out of backup testing if they can analyze their own procedures and show that the first, rapid test is sufficiently accurate.

The purpose of double-checking negative tests is to make sure no cases go overlooked, because untreated strep throat can develop into serious problems, such as rheumatic fever.

But extra testing costs money, so researchers wanted to see how much was spent on the testing and how many health complications were avoided because of it.

Dr. Georges Nakhoul and Dr. John Hickner at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio collected medical records over a two-year period from 25,000 adult patients who had come to the clinic for a sore throat.

About 20,000 of the patients received an in-office strep test, and nearly 17,000 of those were negative.

The doctors sent a throat swab off for backup DNA testing for 15,500 patients, and 953 - or six percent - of those secondary tests came back positive.

No patients who were diagnosed based on the backup test developed complications related to their strep throat infection.

TOO MANY ANTIBIOTICS

Almost half of the 953 patients with a late diagnosis were prescribed antibiotics before the positive test result came back.

The other half received their prescription a couple of days after their initial doctor's visit - perhaps too late to be helpful anyway, Nakhoul said.

"By the time they got the call back from the physician to get the antibiotics, it's been two days. This is usually the window when the antibiotic is most effective... so we're not doing the patient any good," he told Reuters Health.

The results show backup testing didn't prevent any inappropriate use of antibiotics, the researchers reported in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Not only did many of the late-diagnosis patients get a prescription before the results of the second test came in, 45 percent of patients who had both a negative rapid test and a negative backup test also received antibiotics. Without a bacteria-related ailment, those drugs wouldn't be expected to do patients any good.

Over-prescription of antibiotics is a major public health concern, since any use of the drugs can contribute to resistance - making future infections much harder to treat.

"We know antibiotics are used inappropriately regardless of whether backup (testing) is used or not," Van Beneden told Reuters Health.

Each backup test costs patients or their insurance companies $113 at the Cleveland Clinic - which works out to a price tag of $1.7 million in this study alone.

Nakhoul said because none of the missed cases resulted in complications, the added expense isn't worth it.

For practices using an in-office rapid test, he said, "physicians should just believe the (test) and not do the second step."

Americans use more efficient and renewable energy technologies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Americans used less energy in 2011 than in the previous year due mainly to a shift to higher-efficiency energy technologies in the transportation and residential sectors. Meanwhile, less coal was used but more natural gas was consumed according to the most recent energy flow charts released by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Wind power saw the biggest jump from .92 quadrillion BTU, or quads, in 2010 up to 1.17 quads in 2011. (BTU or British Thermal Unit is a unit of measurement for energy and is equivalent to about 1.055 kilojoules).

"Wind energy jumped significantly because, as in previous years, many new wind farms came online," said A.J. Simon, an LLNL energy systems analyst who develops the flow charts using data provided by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration. "This is the result of sustained investment in wind power."

Hydroelectricity also saw an increase going from 2.51 quads in 2010 up to 3.17 quads in 2011.

Hydroelectricity jumped significantly in 2011 because 2011 saw large amounts of precipitation in the Western U.S. Hydroelectric dams were able to produce at their maximum levels while keeping reservoirs full. Similar levels of hydroelectric production were seen in 1997, 1998 and 1999 due to wet years.

Overall, U.S. energy use in 2011 equaled 97.3 quads compared to the 98 quads used in 2010. Most of the energy was tied to coal, natural gas and petroleum.

From 2010 to 2011, use of coal fell dramatically, use of oil (petroleum) fell slightly and use of natural gas increased slightly from 24.65 quads in 2010 to 26.9 quads in 2011.

"Sustained low natural gas prices have prompted a shift from coal to gas in the electricity generating sector," Simon said. "Sustained high oil prices have likely driven the decline in oil use over the past 5 years as people choose to drive less and purchase automobiles that get more miles per gallon."

The majority of energy use in 2011 was used for electricity generation (39.2 quads), followed by transportation, industrial, commercial and residential consumption. However, energy use in the residential, commercial and transportation sectors decreased while industrial energy use increased if only slightly.

"With the advent of shale gas, it appears that natural gas prices in the United States may remain lower than their historical averages for many years into the future," Simon said. "This has prompted many gas users in the industrial and electricity generating sector to switch from coal or oil to natural gas when it is technically possible, but might not have been economical at higher gas prices."

facebook logoFacebook released the financial results for the third quarter of 2012 just after the stock market closed this afternoon. All eyes are on the social networking company to show Wall Street some sort of sign of strength in the results from its second quarter as a publicly-traded company. Its stock price lag at around $20 for several months now, a significant decline from the $38 share price it had when it held its closely-watched (and much-criticized) initial public offering this past May.

October 2012 MCI Survey Comments from Industry Executive Leadership:

Depending on the market segment they represent, executives have differing points of view on the current and future outlook for the industry.

Independent, Micro Ticket

?As an industry we are fine.? However, the economy is limping along in a tortured recovery.? We need our politicians to govern as a team and resolve some structural imbalances.??Paul Menzel, President and Chief Executive Officer, Financial Pacific Leasing, LLC

Independent, Small Ticket

?The industry continues to fuel what growth is occurring in the marketplace. Strong availability of capital continues to compress margins while quality of submissions and portfolio remain strong. Our customers in the small ticket sector need more certainty in the economy before they begin to hire and invest in their business in any widespread fashion.?Valerie Hayes Jester, President, Brandywine Capital Associates, Inc.

Bank, Middle Ticket

?The equipment finance industry is a critical source of capital and structure for the?U.S.? I expect the economy to remain soft, but positive.? At the same time I expect there to continue to be growth in the equipment finance industry.?Executive, Bank, Middle Ticket

Why an MCI-EFI?

Confidence in the?U.S.?economy and the capital markets is a critical driver to the equipment finance industry. Throughout history, when confidence increases, consumers and businesses are more apt to acquire more consumer goods, equipment and durables, and invest at prevailing prices. When confidence decreases, spending and risk-taking tend to fall. Investors are said to be confident when the news about the future is good and stock prices are rising.

Who participates in the MCI-EFI?

The respondents are comprised of a wide cross section of industry executives, including large-ticket, middle-market and small-ticket banks, independents and captive equipment finance companies. The MCI-EFI uses the same pool of 50 organization leaders to respond monthly to ensure the survey?s integrity. Since the same organizations provide the data from month to month, the results constitute a consistent barometer of the industry?s confidence.

?

How is the MCI-EFI designed?

The survey consists of seven questions and an area for comments, asking the respondents? opinions about the following:

  1. Current business conditions
  2. Expected product demand over the next four months
  3. Access to capital over the next four months
  4. Future employment conditions
  5. Evaluation of the current?U.S.?economy
  6. U.S.?economic conditions over the next six months
  7. Business development spending expectations
  8. Open-ended question for comment

?

How may I access the MCI-EFI?

Survey results are posted on the Foundation website,?http://www.leasefoundation.org/IndRsrcs/MCI/, included in theFoundation Forecast newsletter?and included in press releases. Survey respondent demographics and additional information about the MCI are also available at the link above.

The House Around The Corner From Serenity | Baby Boomer Stories

By Larry Teren

In late August 1968, our family finally got out of the far west side of Chicago and moved to the far north side. Rather, we were pushed out of the west side- but that?s another story. Now we were in a location that was as if living in the suburbs. There were half built roads and plenty of empty lots along with the serenity that comes with living in an isolated area. ? ?

We moved into a townhouse development with its own private off-street parking which made Dad quite happy. Each unit was entitled to two car spots in front of their house. Dad was the only driver in the family at this point. Ma never learned to get behind a wheel. Made her too nervous. Somehow that never affected her whacking us when it was appropriate.

Our townhouse anchored the north end of the development. Next to us was a gigantic open field and next to that a fancy small city park. The park had an enclosed tennis court designed for two concurrent matches, an open basketball court with four rims so that there could either be four half-court games going on simultaneously or two semi-full-court ones. This didn?t impress me because we had all that and more ten times the size at Columbus Park, the sculpted greenery that was down the block from our two-flat on the west side. What did get this fifteen year old kid going was that he could look out his bedroom window and see if there were any baseball games going on at the two large diamonds in the ball field next to the basketball and tennis courts. Not only that, but with the unobstructed view, he could take a quick survey and see if there was a shortage of players and therefore worth it to lace up his gym shoes and run over to the park.

That changed at some point in the 1980s when a wealthy guy with nothing else to do decided to buy up the empty lot next door and put up a senior citizen assisted living facility. Nothing wrong with the facility. It is still there and kept up very nicely. But gone went the unobstructed view to the park. Now one had to walk more than a block to the park to see what was going on. Of course by then, the once-fifteen year old boy was a so-called adult living away from the house and trying to jump-start a career in computer consulting.

Other pieces of the open-look serenity started to crumble much sooner. Until the early 1970?s the street that abutted the south end of the townhouse development was quite narrow. If cars were parked on both curb sides, there was room for only one vehicle to pass along the street. If two cars converged from opposite directions, one driver would have to find an open parking spot on his curb and pull into it to permit the other vehicle to pass. What made this somewhat foolish and self-defeating was that all the homes on this two block disaster had front lawns that were as long as the house lots. It was as if all abodes were to a manor born.

Compounding this irritating setup was that the corner intersection of our road and the thin street had only one set of stop signs- for the cars traveling north and south. The thin street traffic did not have to stop. The drivers took advantage of this and never slowed down seemingly determined to show that they had the right of way. Worse, cars coming from the north heading south could not keep going across the interchange after they came to a stop. They either had to turn left or right. The other side of our two lane road was a one way street for traffic moving northward.

North of our house, the paved road came to a quick end a half block away. From that point on until two full blocks away at the beginning of the park, it was an unpaved gravel mess of stones and glass. Our townhouse was first occupied in 1963. Apparently for more than five years, the city of Chicago did not feel it was of any value to connect the frontier to the rest of society. Finally, in the Spring of 1969, the road was completed and we were given passports to get to the shopping district that lay four full city blocks to the north.

Came the early 1970?s and the owners of the properties that faced the thin street were rudely reminded that they were not feudal estate holders and woke up one morning to find that the city had taken away their humongous front lawns. The road was repaved and two cars could easily go up and down the street . Part of the deal, though, to make the local citizenry happy was to finally put in a full four way stop at the corner near our townhouses. Otherwise, the locals were afraid that given an easier pass through, drivers would zoom down the street.

The city engineers forgot to put up warnings to drivers that the intersection was now a four way stop. One afternoon, I walked two blocks east to a drug store to pick up the Chicago Today, an afternoon paper. (Yes, in 1970 or so we still had four papers, two in the morning and two in the afternoon.) On the way back home, I held the paper in a reading stance while every once in a while glancing at what lay in front. As I approached the aforementioned corner, I decided to take a slight shortcut away from the cross walk and instead veer to the right in diagonal to save some steps back to the house. As I made it safely across to our sidewalk, I heard a loud tire screeching and crash noise. I turned to see a car slowly rolling onto the sidewalk corner I had moments earlier vacated. It continued unabated up the lawn of the northeast corner house finally coming to rest as it destroyed a bush or two and touched upon the bricks of the building.

I later found out that an elderly gentleman driver was confused about the stop signs and thought he had the right of way. Unfortunately, it was the last thing he thought. That was when the city decided in the interest of progress, the corner should now have a real honest-to-goodness stop light.

The interests of progress was not yet complete. The previously thin street continued only for another two blocks west of us, cut off by a river channel. The suburb on the other side of the channel had refused- and still does- to permit a bridge over the channel. They plainly don?t want the extra traffic.

In the late 1960?s and early 70?s, once a driver got to the end of the road, they had only one choice to make- turn right onto a partially paved road that had on its east side a slew of condominium buildings and on its west, the riverbank. Apparently, the city still felt like treating those of us who loved serenity as if we really meant it.

One could not turn left because there was no road for two blocks to the south but a closed-off field instead. If a person wanted to leave Serenity and go south to civilization he had to traverse down a narrow side street. This, of course, did not make the residents of the side street very happy as they were constantly ducking the speedsters.

Then one fine day a decision was made to clear the field, open the two block stretch of road to the south and fully pave the road on the left. Hallelujah! Our little isolated community was further brought in touch more quickly to a vibrant, outside world. Except that now all the speedsters from the south found that they had a new shortcut to the north by using the extended road up to the previous thin street and raced eastwards.

More than forty years later, Ma still resides in the townhouse engulfed by the retirement house hoping never to need its assisted living. I visit frequently, now living in the suburb that refuses to allow a bridge. No one plays baseball at that park anymore but something called soccer. The tennis courts are used by immigrants who practice their cricket. A few weeks ago, Ma and I were standing at that famous corner on the southwest side of the street waiting at a red light to cross back towards the house. Impatient that I am, I stepped about a foot or so onto the street. Ma admonished me to be careful because there was very little room for cars who were heading east to maneuver around the car trying to make a left and go north onto our road. She advised me to move back onto the sidewalk or risk having my shoe tips run over.

Last week, my older sister took Ma out shopping. She chose to come back to the house in such a way?that she was attempting to make a left turn at that corner when all of a sudden, a guy going just a little too fast in the rain didn?t maneuver his vehicle around hers. Instead, he crashed into her trunk. His vehicle got the worst of it. Her auto did not roll into the corner house nor did an oncoming car accordionize hers. Her car was reparable and the other driver had insurance. And I?m the guy who had to change his schedule so he could take Ma for her pre-arranged visit to the doctor the following day.

Ah, serenity!

You betcha: Fargo awaits TV version of hit movie

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ? Ask folks in Fargo what they first thought about the 1996 movie that made their city famous, and some will tell you they were not fans.

Some residents initially didn't appreciate the Coen brothers' dark humor or were offended by the extreme violence and depiction of Scandinavian culture. Not to mention those heavy accents on "you betcha" and "ya sure."

But the fame and cash it brought Fargo eventually brought the city around. Now, 16 years later, Fargo awaits the debut of a new cable television show by the same name, and many residents here are less apprehensive about how their hometown will be portrayed this time around. Just ask Kristin Rudrud.

"Anything the Coen brothers are going to be involved in is going to be brilliant," said Rudrud, 57, who played a supporting role in the movie and has a hankering to promote everything about her hometown. "And they love Fargo. They love this area. So it will be done in a very fun and loving way."

The Oscar-winning "Fargo" starred Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief who investigates a series of murders, and William H. Macy as a car salesman who hires two criminals, played by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, to kidnap his wife. In one of the final scenes, Stormare feeds Buscemi's body into a wood chipper.

Though the movie's story is mostly based in Minnesota, it made Fargo a household name for many across the country ? to the early dismay of some city folk who watched the premiere at the Fargo Theater in 1996.The theater was quiet inside and some moviegoers were offended, said Margie Bailly, who was executive director of the Fargo Theater at the time. Some residents even walked out.

"Those of us who were laughing were a little lonely," she said.

But locals later warmed up as the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and Fargo started to see the benefits from all the publicity. The theater hosted a free Oscar party with a polka band and Jell-O treats that Entertainment Weekly billed as one of the top soirees of the evening.

That event was publicized in several countries, and Fargo cashed in. Donations flowed for the theater's restoration, which dovetailed with plans to revitalize the city's downtown.

Sixteen years later, travelers looking to see the real Fargo still swing through, with many flocking to take a picture next to the iconic wood chipper, autographed on the chute by the Coen brothers and displayed at the city's main tourism center. Tourism staff hand out ear-flap hats to tourists and take pictures of them stuffing the leg of a mannequin into the Yard Shark.

"A good majority of people come in here just looking for the wood chipper," said Jayne Rieth, who works at the tourism center. She didn't like the movie on the big screen, but watched it at home recently so she could be better informed at work. And the tourism center and shops around town sell plenty of wood chipper T-shirts, shot glasses, koozies, mugs and ? of course ? ice scrapers.

City boosters hope the TV show produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, the Minnesota-born brothers behind the popular film, will add to the notoriety. No timeline has been announced by the FX Network, and John Solberg, FX's senior vice president of public relations, did not return messages left by The Associated Press.

"I don't know how it can be a bad thing for us," said Charley Johnson, president and CEO of the city's convention and visitor's bureau. "People still talk about the movie all the time."

Larry Gauper, of Fargo, a retired health insurance executive, also thinks most people are looking forward to the TV show.

"There are some people who don't like us sort of being mocked or being made fun of, but I think most people really appreciate the attention Fargo gets," Gauper said.

But "Fargo" movie fan Marnie Piehl wonders if the city has changed too much ? thanks to population growth and a revitalized downtown with high-end restaurants and bars serving craft beer and organic vegetables ? that it no longer makes sense to situate the TV show here. McDormand's character would have left Fargo years ago, Piehl said.

"That may sound funny to someone from New York, but it just doesn't fit for me anymore," she said. "The North Dakota story is not the Marge Gunderson story anymore."

Though details about the plot and characters in the FX show are scant, that hasn't stopped Fargo residents from speculating about it.

Mayor Dennis Walaker said his favorite character is the sheriff, and hopes McDormand gets a prominent role. And although Rudrud's character, Macy's wife, was killed off in the movie, she joked that there might be room for her in the adaptation.

"Well, I haven't been chopped up," she said. "There's always a possibility."

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:51 p.m. ET Oct. 20, 2012

MADRID (AP) - Lionel Messi scored his first hat trick of the season and Cesc Fabregas set up three goals as Barcelona survived Javier Mascherano's ejection and won 5-4 at Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish league on Saturday.

Fabregas set up Jordi Alba's goal in the third minute, then passed to Cristian Tello for an eighth-minute goal and to Messi for a 3-0 lead in the 18th.

Luis Pizzi's penalty kick in the 26th and Alex Bergantinos' goal in the 37th pulled the hosts to 3-2, but Messi scored again in the 43rd.

Pizzi cut the gap to 4-3 in the 47th, and Mascherano received his second yellow card two minutes later for a foul on Riki. Messi hit the crossbar inthe 51st, dribbled through the defense to score in the 77th for his first hat trick this season and 21st for Barcelona. Two minutes later, Alba lobbed the ball over Victor Valdes for an own goal.

"It was a crazy game in every way," Fabregas said. "We are happy to get the three points after a long international week. We take away our good first half, but those four goals show we have room to improve."

Messi has 15 goals this season, including a league-leading 11. Barcelona (7-0-1) leads second-place Atletico Madrid (6-0-1) by three points and is eight points ahead of Real Madrid (4-2-2).

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea maintained its strong Premier League start by winning 4-2 at Tottenham to preserve a four-point lead over Manchester United and Manchester City.

Juan Mata scored twice between goals by Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge as the Blues (7-0-1) overcame a 2-1 deficit and rallied against Spurs and American goalkeeper Brad Friedel. William Gallas and Jermain Defoe scored for Tottenham.

After putting Manchester United (6-2) behind with an 11th-minute own goal, Wayne Rooney scored twice in a 4-2 win over visiting Stoke. Rooney tied the score in the 27th minute and also scored United's final goal in the 65th, with Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck scoring in between, with Welbeck eluding American defender Geoff Cameron. Michael Kightly scored for Stoke.

Manchester City (5-0-3) rallied for a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion on goals by substitute Edin Dzeko in the 80th minute and the second minute of stoppage time. Shane Long scored in the 67th for West Brom, which had a man advantage after James Milner was given a red card by referee Mark Clattenburg for a foul on Long.

Arsenal lost 1-0 at Norwich, which gained its first win of the season on Grant Holt's 19th-minute goal.

Raheem Sterling scored in the 29th minute at Anfield in a 1-0 victory over Reading and at 17 years, 317 days became the club's second-youngest Premier League scorer behind Michael Owen.

West Ham routed Southampton 4-1, Swansea beat Wigan 2-1 and Fulham edged Aston Villa 1-0.

In the second-tier League Championship, American defender Tim Ream started in Bolton's 3-2 win at home over Bristol City, his first appearance since Sept. 1. Ream fouled Martyn Woolford, leading to Kevin Davies' penalty kick that put the visitors ahead 2-1 in the 21st.

American defender Jonathan Spector was ejected in Birmingham's 1-1 tie against Leicester, receiving his second yellow card in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

TURIN, Italy (AP) - Defending champion Juventus needed goals from substitutes Martin Caceres in the 80th minute and 19-year-old Paul Pogba in the 82nd for a 2-0 win over second-place Napoli that extended its Serie A unbeaten streak to 47 matches.

Juventus (7-0-1) opened a three-point lead over Napoli (6-1-1-).

Lazio (6-2) is four points off the lead in third following a 3-2 win over struggling AC Milan (2-5-1).

Hernanes put Lazio ahead in the 25th with a deflected shot, Antonio Candreva doubled the lead in the 41st with a long-range effort and Miroslav Klose added in the 49th with a volley from the edge of the penalty area.

Nigel de Jong redirected a free kick from Urby Emanuelson in the 61st and teenager Stephen El Shaarawy added his fifth of the season in the 79th.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Defending champion Borussia Dortmund slumped to a 2-1 loss at home to bitter rival Schalke in the 141st Ruhr derby, while Bayern Munich became the first team to start a Bundesliga season with eight straight wins.

Ibrahim Afellay opened the scoring in the 14th minute, when he crashed a low shot in off the left post, and Schalke (5-1-2) went 2-0 up in the 48th, when Marco Hoeger finished off a counterattack after a brilliant through ball from Lewis Holtby. American midfielder Jermaine Jones, coming off a foot injury that limited him to a second-half appearance in the World Cup qualifier at Antigua and Barbuda, entered in the 78th,

Robert Lewandowski pulled one back with a header from Marco Reus' free kick seven minutes later, but it wasn't enough to save Dortmund's 17-game unbeaten run at home or prevent the side falling 12 points behind Bayern.

Thomas Mueller scored twice in Bayern's 5-0 rout of Fortuna Duesseldorf, with Mario Mandzukic, Luiz Gustavo and Rafinha also getting goals for the visitors.

---

PARIS (AP) - Paris Saint-Germain (5-0-4) moved into the French league lead for the first time this season, winning 1-0 at home against Reims on Kevin Gameiro's goal in the 65th minute.

Mailing Lists versus Forums: Community, Convenience & Closeness ...

Mailing Lists versus Forums: Community, Convenience & ClosenessThe way we communicate in groups online naturally changes as our technology evolves. We cannot assume that a technology or format that worked in one decade will work as well in the next.

And yet, there?s a reason why some technologies persist, despite alternatives that seem to offer additional benefits. Email is still with us (and seems likely it will always be, in one form or another), largely because of its asynchronous and convenient nature. Unlike so many other newer online technologies and services that seem to demand our real-time attention, email is happy to be exist in the background on our computers and mobile devices, ready to be reviewed in batches when our time permits.

Yet time and time again, organizations seem to face the same common conundrum ? now that we?ve ?outgrown? our mailing list, how do we move our organization to an online forum?

Let?s review the benefits and drawbacks of different ways people communicate online today in groups, and see if we can?t answer why mailing lists remain popular, despite their flaws.

Mailing Lists

Electronic mailing lists ? also referred as by one of the specific and most widely-used brands, ?listservs? ? have been with us long before the web, since 1984. Their longevity can be attributed to the fact that email is still a commonly used, daily tool by most of us. Because mailing lists exist, in user?s eyes, primarily through one?s email box, they are simple, automatic, and require little end-user thought. The conversations just come to you.

The downside to this automation is one of focus and volume. As mailing lists grow in volume ? whether through an increase in subscribers or through existing subscribers simply posting more and more to the list ? some people find it harder and harder to manage the growth.

As mailing lists grow, they also become more diverse. A topic-focused mailing list of 100 people can grow into a morass when it reaches 1,000 subscribers. Why? Because people start branching out in discussing tangential or social topics that are less focused than the initial mailing list?s topic. Some people find this annoying or hard to manage, while others see it as the normal, healthy growth of a social group.

Mailing lists stink in their ability to easily manage and archive a diverse set of topics. While most mailing lists have web archives, the archives are often difficult to access, search, or browse through. They can only be organized via date, threads, or authors ? but not topics! This is largely the fault of stagnant software development for mailing lists, since they are seen as such old and stale technology. Mailing lists seem to work best when their topics are very well-defined and don?t stray too often outside of that specific topic area (e.g., a mailing list about Lady Gaga would be a better limited topical choice versus one entitled, ?Pop Singers?).

Mailing lists are also greatly dependent upon a user?s email software, and the user?s ability to successfully use all of the program?s features. For instance, email programs since the early 1990s have had the capability to filter messages and organize them into specific folders, to make for easier reading and tracking. Yet still many users don?t know they can do this, or how. Therefore, some users can quickly become overwhelmed by a high-traffic mailing list?s volume.

Mailing lists also have few social aspects built in to the software ? aspects that can enhance a group?s psychological closeness and sense of community. There?s no concept of a user profile with a photo or links so that other users can easily see what that person?s all about. There are no friends lists, or ?ignore? lists for people you don?t want to read emails from (although a person could do this via their email program?s filters).

Pros
  • Automatic for end-user ? requires no new learning, everything ?pushed? to user
  • User engagement is stronger ? no need to remember to visit a website
Cons
  • Inaccessible archives
  • Confusing to subscribe/unsubscribe
  • Volume of messages
  • User experience largely dependent upon type of email client used
  • Threading, filtering is email client dependent
  • Discourages media sharing (such as photos)
  • Hard to social share
  • No sense of a user profile
  • No ?friending? or ?ignore? capabilities

?

Web Forums

Web forums come in a diverse set of shapes and sizes. Although web forums have been around nearly since the web itself (circa 1994), people still tend to think of online forums as ?new.? The most widely used commercial web forum software was first developed in 2000 ? 12 years ago! ? and is called vBulletin. Now in its fifth generation, it is a mature product that still has a vibrant developer community to help with add-ons and ways to enhance its functionality and change its looks.

Forum-based online communities are usually a collection of forums, organized around specific topics (which may also have even more discrete sub-forums). A pop singing community could have forums for each popular singer today (?Lady Gaga Forum?), and then sub-forums for even more specific topical discussions (?Lady Gaga Concerts,? ?Lady Gaga Clothing,? etc.). Web forums are simple, too. You go to the forum?s website, register for an account, confirm your account, and usually can begin posting right away.

To try and combat the problem of reminding users to re-visit the forum community, most forums also allow members to subscribe to specific forums or topics of interest, so they can receive updates via email. Usually, however, a user can?t reply via email ? they have to log on to the forum and make their reply there.

Forums allow not only for a greater diversity of topics, they also have much richer social sharing aspects. People can share photos, their user profile, and even create friends lists of people they like on the forums. Alternatively, if a user finds they don?t want to read any more of a particular person?s posts, they can also add them to their ?ignore? list.

Such rich features make forums an obvious and easy choice for most.

Pros
  • Simple paradigm understood by most
  • Better organized via topics
  • Archives & accessing old topics easier
  • No email distractions unless you manually subscribe to them
  • Same user experience for all ? user experience not web-browser dependent
  • Encourages sharing media (such as photos)
  • Easy to social share
  • Rich user profiles
  • Can ?friend? other users, or ?ignore? ones you don?t care for
Cons
  • Have to remember to visit forums ? it?s pull versus email?s push
  • Requires manual signup & registration
  • Can have more off-topic conversations by members who stumble upon forum

?

The Paradox of Mailing Lists vs Forums

So why does anyone still use mailing lists? Despite their older tech, why does Yahoo Groups, for instance, list over 50,000 health-related mailing lists? Why are the most active cancer support groups still based around mailing lists? Why does most software development still happen via mailing lists?

Herein lies the paradox of mailing lists. Despite all of their faults, they are the easy, lazy choice. That is, because they don?t require any effort on the part of the user to access the topical conversations, they are easier for many people to use, especially if a person belongs to multiple online communities (and who doesn?t nowadays?).

Here?s a personal example. I have not only a half-dozen professional organizations I?m involved in, but I also enjoy about an equal number of hobbies and social interests. Add to that another 4 or 5 areas where I need to keep up as a developer, sysadmin, and owner of a small business. That?s about 18 different communities I?m actively involved in. (And that doesn?t even count the usual array of social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn.)

Imagine they all had web forums as their community of choice. That means in order to stay current with them, I would need to visit 18 different websites a day (in addition to the dozens of other sites I already visit for news, entertainment, distraction, information, research, etc.). This problem is getting worse, too, as more and more websites want you to download their specific app for your Android or iPhone.

I could, alternatively, carefully curate what specific topics I?m interested in for each community, and subscribe to them to receive email alerts when those topics are posted to in the forums. This would require some time up-front, and then some time to keep such lists updated and current. I?m also not sure how receiving so many notices would cut down on my email volume, however, of email volume was the problem I was trying to solve.

That is why mailing lists remain popular ? you can subscribe to dozens of different topical lists, and visit them in your mailbox whenever you want, without having to remember to visit each specific website.

From most organization?s perspective, web forums are the obvious choice. But that choice may not always be so obvious to the organization?s members.

For the past couple of years small businesses started using accounting outsource services like accounts payable, account receivable, and general bookkeeping services. As they started seeing business benefits beyond cost savings now they started outsourcing other higher-value accounting projects like accounting and financial process innovation, real-time accounting integration, budgeting and forecasting. Some small businesses are considering outsourcing their entire accounting and financial operations to outsource vendors. Increasing confidence in accounting outsource providers skills, availability of tools and technologies, and accounting process standardization are making the shift for the small businesses on outsourcing higher-value accounting projects.
Small Business accounting outsourcing maturity

Teen Sex Study Links Age At First Sexual Experience To Romantic ...

When it comes to sex, "late bloomers" may have a better shot at finding happiness in romantic relationships later in life, according to new research conducted at the University of Texas at Austin--but it's complicated.

The research shows that people who lose their virginity at an older age are less likely to marry and tend to have fewer romantic partners in adulthood. But those who do end up in a committed relationship in adulthood tend to be happier with their partners than their peers whose first sexual intercourse came at an earlier age.

What's the explanation?

?Individuals who first navigate intimate relationships in young adulthood, after they have accrued cognitive and emotional maturity, may learn more effective relationship skills than individuals who first learn scripts for intimate relationships while they are still teenagers,? study author Paige Harden, assistant professor in the university's department of psychology, said in a written statement.

Interestingly, Harden suggested in a similar study last year that sexually active teenagers in romantic relationships tend to have fewer delinquent behavior problems than their peers.

?The idea that abstaining from sex is always ?good? for teens is an oversimplification," she said in the statement. "Teenagers? sexual experiences are complicated.?

For her most recent study, Harden used data from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health to examine 1,659 same-sex sibling pairs who were followed from approximately 16 to 29 years of age. During that time period, each sibling was classified as having first sex at an early, average (between 15 and 19), or late age.

The research showed an association between people who waited to have sex and higher satisfaction levels in adulthood romantic relationships, even after factoring in genetic and environmental factors, education level, income, religion, and physical attractiveness. But Harden said that more research is needed to determine what exactly drives an association between waiting to have sex and satisfaction in later relationships.

?Most people experience their first intimate relationships when they are teenagers, but few studies have examined how these adolescent experiences are related to marital relationships in adulthood,? she said.

The research was published in the October issue of the journal Psychological Science.

Timeline of events, comments surrounding Benghazi

The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, has become a major issue in the presidential campaign, focused on the evolving Obama administration explanations.

Before the Sept. 11 assault that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, a 14-minute video surfaced on the Internet as a trailer to a low-budget movie insulting the Prophet Muhammad. On the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and attacked the U.S. compound in Benghazi.

What follows is a timeline of key events and statements about the Benghazi attack by President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, Republican senators and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The State Department provided the timeline for Sept. 10-11 with local times in Benghazi; the remaining events were gathered from other Associated Press sources.

Sept. 10-11

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens arrives in Benghazi and holds meetings on and off the consulate grounds on Sept. 10. He spends the night, and for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks holds meetings inside the compound only. It is an enclosed area about 300 yards long by 100 yards wide, with a 9-foot outer wall topped by barbed wire and augmented by barriers, steel drop bars and other security upgrades. There are four buildings in the compound. Five diplomatic security officers are present, along with four members of a local militia deployed by Libya's government to provide added security.

Around 8:30 p.m.

Stevens finishes his final meeting of the day and escorts a Turkish diplomat outside the main entrance of the consulate. The situation is calm. There are no protests.

Around 9:40 p.m.

Agents hear loud noises, gunfire and explosions near the front gate. A barracks at the entrance housing the local militiamen is burnt down. Agents viewing cameras see a large group of armed men flowing into the compound. Alarm is sounded. Telephone calls are made to the embassy in Tripoli, officials in Washington, the Libyan authorities and a U.S. quick reaction force located at a second compound a little more than a mile away.

Grabbing weapons

One agent, armed with a sidearm and an M4 submachine gun, takes Stevens and computer specialist Sean Smith to a safe room inside one of the compound's two main residences. It has a heavy metal grill and several locks, medical supplies and water, and windows that can be opened only from the inside. The other agents equip themselves with long guns, body armor, helmets and ammunition at other buildings. Two try to make it to the building with Stevens. They are met by armed men and are forced to retreat.

Attackers breach the compound

Attackers penetrate Stevens' building and try to break the grill locks for the safe room but cannot gain access. They dump jerry cans of diesel fuel in the building, light furniture on fire and set aflame part of the exterior of the building. Two of the remaining four agents are in the compound's other residence. Attackers penetrate that building, but the agents barricade themselves in and the attackers can't reach them. Attackers try to enter the tactical operations center, where the last two agents are located. They smash up the door but cannot enter the building.

Americans trapped

Meanwhile, Stevens' building rapidly fills up with thick diesel smoke and burning fumes from the furniture. Inside, visibility is less than 3 feet. Unable to breathe, the Americans go to a bathroom and open a window but still can't get enough air. They decide to leave the building. The agent goes first, flopping out onto a patio enclosed by sandbags. He takes immediate fire, including probably rocket-propelled grenades. Stevens and Smith don't come out of the building. The agent, suffering severely from smoke inhalation, goes in and out of the building several times to look for them. He then climbs a ladder to the roof of the building and collapses. He radios the other agents to alert them to the situation there.

The other four agents are able to reunite and take an armored vehicle to Stevens' building. They reach the collapsed agent and try to set up a perimeter. They take turns going into the building, searching on hands and knees for the missing Americans. Smith is pulled out, dead. Stevens cannot be found.

Reinforcements

A six-person, quick-reaction security team arrives from their compound across town. About 60 Libyan militiamen accompany them. They attempt to secure a perimeter around Stevens' building and take turns going inside. Taking fire, Libyan forces determine they can't hold the perimeter. A decision is made to evacuate the compound and return with everyone to the reaction force's compound.

Evacuation

Agents pile into an armored vehicle with Smith's body and leave through the main gate. They face immediate fire. Crowds and groups of men block two different routes to the security compound. Heavy traffic means they are traveling only about 15 mph and trying not to attract attention. On a narrow street they reach a group of men who signal for them to enter a compound. They sense an attack and speed away, taking heavy fire from AK-47 machine guns at a distance of only 2 feet and hand grenades thrown against and under the car. Two tires are blown out.

They speed past another crowd of men and onto a main street and across a grassy median into opposing traffic. The agents drive against traffic, eventually reaching their compound. Security gets into firing positions around the compound and on the roof. They take more gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades intermittently for several hours.

More reinforcements

In the night, a team of reinforcements from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli arrives on a chartered aircraft at the Benghazi airport and reaches the security compound.

Around 4 a.m.

The compound's building is hit by mortar fire. The roof is hit and two security personnel are killed. One agent involved in the attack from the beginning is severely wounded. The men decide to evacuate the city entirely. They spend the next hours securing the annex and moving a large convoy of vehicles to the airport. They evacuate on two flights.

Sept. 12. The president, in the Rose Garden the day after the attack, uses the word "terror." He says: "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.? Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America.? We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act.? And make no mistake, justice will be done."

Romney accuses the administration of showing weakness in the face of the attack, prompting the president to say his rival "seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later."

The CIA station chief in Libya reports to Washington within 24 hours of the attack that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob upset about the anti-Islam video.

Sept. 16. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice goes on television to say the attack was the work of individual clusters of extremists but began as a spontaneous protest. She says evidence gathered to that point showed no indication of a premeditated or coordinated strike.

Sept. 18. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says the White House doesn't have any indication the Benghazi attack was premeditated, but adds it's still under investigation and the assessment could change. The president on the "Late Show" with David Letterman describes the anti-Muslim film and then says: "Extremists and terrorists used this (as) an excuse to attack (a) variety of our embassies, including the one ? the consulate in Libya."

Sept. 20. The president says that extremists used the anti-Islam video as an excuse to assault U.S. interests overseas, including the attack in Benghazi. Secretary of State Clinton says she's appointing an independent accountability review board to review the circumstances of the attack. Retired diplomat Thomas Pickering will lead the panel.

Sept. 24. Romney leads a chorus of Republican criticism of the administration's foreign policy, accusing the president of minimizing the killings in Libya as a mere "bump in the road" rather than part of a chain of events that threatens American interests. Carney calls the accusations "desperate and offensive."

Sept. 25. The president, in an address to the United Nations General Assembly, says that attacks on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America" and calls on world leaders to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world. Romney calls the attack an act of terrorism and says the United States must use foreign aid to bring about lasting change in such places.

Sept. 26. Carney says that Obama considers the deadly assault a terrorist attack.

Sept. 27. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says there can be no doubt that terrorists had planned and carried out the attack, but Republicans lash out at the president and senior administration officials over their evolving description.

Sept. 28. Shawn Turner, spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said, "As the intelligence community collects and analyzes more information related to the attack, our understanding of the event continues to evolve. In the immediate aftermath, there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo. We provided that initial assessment to executive branch officials and members of Congress. ... Throughout our investigation we continued to emphasize that information gathered was preliminary and evolving. As we learned more about the attack, we revised our initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists."

Oct. 4. A team of FBI agents arrives in Benghazi to investigate the assault and leaves after about 12 hours on the ground.

Oct. 5. UN Ambassador Rice denies she tried to mislead Congress, telling three Republican senators in a letter that her comments on Sept. 16 were based on the best information available at the time from intelligence officials.

Oct. 10. A top State Department official, Charlene Lamb, acknowledges at a House hearing that she had declined to approve more U.S. security as violence in Benghazi spiked. She said the department wanted to train Libyans to protect the consulate. She told lawmakers, "I made the best decisions I could with the information I had."

Oct. 11. Vice President Joe Biden says in his debate with Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan: "We weren't told they wanted more security there." Romney says the attack is an issue in the presidential campaign, in part because Americans wonder why it took the Obama administration so long to acknowledge it was a terrorist act.

Oct. 12. The White House defends Biden's "we weren't told" debate statement; Carney says Biden was referring to the White House, the president and himself.

Romney says, "The vice president directly contradicted sworn testimony of State Department officials. He's doubling down on denial." Romney also says: "President Obama, this is an issue because Americans wonder why it was it took so long for you and your administration to admit that this was a terrorist attack,"

Undersecretary of State for Management Pat Kennedy comments on the 16-member site security team of U.S. troops that left Libya in the weeks prior to the attack, despite efforts by its leader to stay longer. Kennedy said, "It provided security to Tripoli, not Benghazi. On a small number of occasions, a couple of SST members would travel to Benghazi for very specific reasons, but they were not part of the long-term security presence in Benghazi."

Oct. 14. Republicans keep up their attack. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., says presidential aides deliberately covered up the details of the attack so that voters wouldn't question Obama's handling of the war on terror.

Oct. 15. Clinton takes responsibility for the attack, saying security at all diplomatic missions is her job, not that of the White House. She says: "I take responsibility. I'm in charge of the State Department's 60,000 people all over the world (at) 275 posts."

Oct. 16. Libya becomes a major issue in the second presidential debate. It's the first time Obama uses the exact phrase "terrorist attack." The president says that the day after the attack, "I stood in the Rose Garden and I told the American people and the world that we are going to find out exactly what happened. That this was an act of terror and I also said that we're going to hunt down those who committed this crime." Romney countered, "I want to make sure we get that for the record, because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror."

Obama takes responsibility for the security in Benghazi.

Oct. 17. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., says, "But first of all, responsibility for American security doesn't lie with the secretary of state. It lies with the president of the United States. It's either willful deception or a degree of incompetence and failure to understand fundamental facts on the ground."

Oct. 18. The president says on "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, "If four Americans get killed, it's not optimal. ... We're going to fix it."

Oct. 19. The AP reveals that the CIA's Libya station chief sent a report within 24 hours of the attack that there was evidence that militants were behind the assault, rather than a mob upset about the anti-Islamic video.
