India's central bank set to hold interest rates steady

India's central bank was widely expected to keep interest rates on hold Tuesday, a day after saying it was worried about still stubborn inflation despite a slowing economy.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hinted in a report issued on the eve of its regular policy meeting in India's financial hub that it was unable to cut interest rates further at this point to spur the nation's flagging economy.

"Persistence of inflation, even as growth is slowing, has emerged as a major challenge for monetary policy," the bank said.

India's once-booming economy grew just 5.3 percent between January and March, its slowest annual quarterly expansion in nine years.

While other central banks around the globe have been easing interest rates in bids to revive their troubled economies, the RBI suggested that economic reforms to boost investment were the key to India's revival.

The RBI, which will announce its rates decision at 0530 GMT, rebuked the government, saying "lack of a quick policy response to address structural bottlenecks and encourage investment exacerbated the (economic) slowdown".

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress party-led government has failed to make significant strides towards scaling back hefty subsidies on food, fuel and fertilisers or cutting its sizeable fiscal deficit, analysts note.

The economy is now at a "critical juncture" and the RBI encouraged "policy actions to encourage investment", which would include removing constraints on foreign direct investment.

The bank lowered rates in April to kickstart growth -- its first such move in three years. But it has since kept monetary policy steady, citing inflationary pressures, despite calls from business leaders to stimulate the economy.

A weak monsoon, in which the rains have been more than 20 percent lower than normal so far, has stoked the bank's inflation worries because of the potential impact on food prices if crops fail.

Wholesale inflation already stands at 7.25 percent -- far above the bank's comfort level of five to six percent -- while the consumer price index, which covers a smaller band of goods, is at 10.02 percent.

"With upside risks to inflation, we believe that there is limited room for the RBI -- at this juncture -- to support growth through a cut in the repo rate," said Shubhada Rao, chief economist at private Yes Bank.

Why Genealogists Should Attend Family History Conferences ...

A family history conference is obviously a fascinating event for genealogists and ancestry buffs at all levels of expertise. Really, just about everyone will come away with something, whether a few tantalizing new tidbits, or a whole slew of new information. You?ll meet loads of people who share your interests, hear fascinating speakers, and you may even come away with some handy free perks.

Leicester and Rutland Record OfficeThere may be a lot going on at home or at work, and maybe it?s a struggle to get away. If you?re on the fence about whether or not to attend a family history conference, read on. Here are a few excellent reasons why genealogy conferences will do you a world of good and why it makes sense to attend Exodus: Movement of the People in 2013

Go Social

As much as we may like to stay holed up at home with our research, sometimes the best thing we can do for ourfamily tree is to get out there and network with others in our field. All genealogists can benefit enormously from the input of others, and the interaction can do wonders for your own research. Not only can you bounce ideas and theories off of other family historians but often professionals attending will give you advice for FREE!? In any case you will be able to feed off each other?s passion for the study of genealogy.

It?s a good idea to have a stack of business cards handy when you attend an event like this, as you?ll very likely run into like minded individuals who share common research and interests. Don?t discount the power of networking and socializing at conferences. Someone else might have just the key you?ve been searching for.

Solve Brick Walls

Maybe you?ve run into a wall, and despite your best research, you?ve been unable to get any further. Well, it?s been wisely said that two heads are better than one. Family history conferences are a fantastic way to get like-minded folks together to solve some of the most puzzling problems and conundrums.

Access Products and Services

At the Halsted Trust 2013 conference, there will be the opportunity to view a wealth of the latest products and services geared to the study of genealogy. You may have hesitated in purchasing some of these things like a findmypast subscription, but now?s your chance to try them all out for free. Often vendors will even offer special discounts or free samples to conference attendees.

Research Opportunities

Family history conferences are often strategically located near excellent research libraries and county record offices or other sources of excellent resource material related to the study of genealogy.

Even if a conference takes place in an area that you?re not currently researching, do take advantage of the excellent resources available, as mostrecord offices will have information well beyond a specific geographic region. You might just find something invaluable if you take the time to check out the available resources. The Leicestershire Record Office is just 14 miles from the hotel and with such excellent leisure facilities, the Hinckley Island hotel is a great base to extend your stay and spend some time with the local family history resources.

Join Societies

Joining a couple genealogical or family history societies is a great way to carry on connections you?ve made at the conference. This is especially true if you find one that specializes in your primary field or area of research.

Top Motivational Speaker on YouTube Business Marketing | Patrick ...

Business Speaker on YouTube for Business

Patrick Schwerdtfeger is a motivational keynote speaker whose topics include using YouTube for business and social media marketing strategies. He?s a leading authority on self-employment and the author of Marketing Shortcuts for the Self-Employed (2011, Wiley). There are four chapters in his award-winning book (2012 Small Business Book Awards) that cover a variety of marketing strategies on YouTube (in Part 6 of the book: Leverage Social Media) and is included below for your review. The book has a total of 80 short chapters, each ending with an Implementation Checklist.

Keynote Speech about YouTube Marketing

YouTube is the second largest search engine on the internet today, just behind Google itself. Of course, Google owns YouTube also! In fact, when surveying people within different age brackets, those between 8 and 13 years old actually went to YouTube before going to Google! And the trend is accelerating every year. That means that the population will soon be getting their questions answered by watching videos rather than reading the answers in text format. Patrick has been following this trend since its inception and has four chapters in his book devoted to the exploding popularity of YouTube. He also has 500+ videos on his own YouTube channels, giving him an insiders view of the trends in action. If your attendees need to learn about the opportunities of marketing their businesses on YouTube, Patrick is the perfect person to convey the message. His presentations are well known to be actionable and inspiring, leaving attendees excited and empowered to use the same strategies themselves.

Chapter 75: YouTube Viral Videos

What?s the most effective type of content?

Before we answer that, we have to determine what the options are. There are basically just four types of content available: text, audio, photos (or images), and video (or animation). Which do you think is the most effective from a marketing perspective? You guessed it. Video! People love video. Period. It?s easy. It?s intuitive. It?s fun. Video requires the least amount of effort to watch, understand, and/or learn from. As a result, good video content tends to get shared more than other types of content.
Next up: where does your marketing content come from? Well, there are really just two places where relevant marketing content can come from: your business or your customers. Think about this for a minute. Peer reviews: that?s content about your company provided by your customers. What about photos? Yes, you could be sharing photos of your business online, but your customers might be posting photos about your business too. What about videos? Same thing.

What?s more effective, content provided by your business or content provided by your customers? Right again! Content provided by your customers is far more effective than content provided by your own business. It makes sense. People will always believe what someone else says about you more than what you say about yourself. It?s more credible. It?s a third-party endorsement, whether it?s a positive comment or a negative one. So what?s the most effective content available? Bingo! Video content about your business that is provided by your customers is the most effective content you can get.

Back in January 2009, the Australian Tourism Board advertised for ?The Best Job in the World.? It got huge media coverage. Maybe you remember it. Anyway, the job paid $100,000 for six months?not bad. The successful candidate would live in a beautiful house on an island in Australia?s Great Barrier Reef area. He or she would be provided with all the snorkeling gear, scuba diving apparatus, and parasailing equipment he or she could handle. The responsibilities? Simple. He or she would have to write one blog post every day on the Australian Tourism Board?s blog.

In order to apply, candidates had to submit a video (one minute or less) demonstrating why they would be perfect for the job. Well, as you can imagine, the buzz exploded and the job opportunity was reported by media outlets around the world. The result? Almost 35,000 people submitted videos. Talk about spectacular content! We?re talking about almost 35,000 videos featuring beautiful young human beings (for the most part) talking about why they love the Great Barrier Reef. Brilliant. All those videos were posted on YouTube and collectively watched by millions of people around the world. Awesome, awesome, awesome!

But it gets better. People were allowed to vote on the videos they liked best?one vote per e-mail address. So they ended up with an opt-in list of more than 400,000 e-mail addresses. The brilliance of this campaign is insane. The interesting thing is that the eventual 6-month contract wasn?t nearly as successful as the campaign to hire the candidate in the first place. The hiring campaign delivered most of the benefit. That kind of video exposure is priceless.

I recently met with a company that makes accessories for wheelchairs. They make a great product that make it possible for wheelchair users to move forward by either pushing or pulling vertical levers instead of manually turning the wheels. We put together a brilliant strategy based on the same concept as the Australian Tourism Board. Unfortunately, the company never pulled the trigger, but I?m convinced it would?ve been a winner. The idea was to send e-mails to their past customers letting them know we?d be having a contest where owners of these accessories could submit videos of how they were using the product. The most creative and inspiring videos would win great prizes. The plan was to purchase 20 Flip digital video recorders and send them out to interested customers along with self-addressed postage-paid return envelopes. ?Record your video and send it back,? the insert would say. I bet we would?ve gotten some fabulous videos.

I could imagine a video of someone (maybe a veteran) using the levers to propel himself up Lombard Street in San Francisco, the steepest street in the country. Or someone going up a hiking trail ? in a wheelchair! It?s really too bad we never got a chance to test the strategy. How can you incentivize your own customers to create content about your business? Give them a good reason (like contest prizes) and you?ll be amazed at what you get back.

YouTube Viral Videos: Implementation Checklist

What do you do that?s remarkable?
How can your customers tell their story?
Imagine videos about your business.
Incentivize your customers to make them.
Have a contest and offer great prizes.
Support the process by providing cameras.
Post and promote those videos on YouTube.

Chapter 76: YouTube Educational Videos

Are you building exposure on YouTube?

YouTube is serving more than two billion video views per day right now. Are any of those videos yours? Are any of those videos about your business? Those two billion views are being watched whether you?re there or not. People with questions are searching on YouTube whether you?re providing answers or not. So how do we get your content in front of that traffic? How do we get your business in front of those eyeballs?

You may be familiar with the name Gary Vaynerchuk. If not, we?re talking about a super high-energy and fast-talking 31-year-old guy who inherited his parents? retail wine store in New Jersey, just outside New York City. The store is called WineLibrary. So what did he do? He started his own video blog called WineLibrary TV and his frantic communication style make his videos extremely entertaining to watch. He literally eats dirt and chews leather to explain the flavors in wine. He?s not exactly your typical French sommelier! But the younger generation loves this guy.

To be clear, Gary Vaynerchuk posts a new video almost every single day, so this is no small undertaking. But he managed to explode his annual revenue from $4 million to more than $60 million per year in the process. Imagine: $4 million to more than $60 million!! And two thirds of the revenue came from online orders. His parents never once took an online order. He started it. Two thirds of $60 million is $40 million! This guy went from zero to $40 million in online orders! How? He demonstrated his expertise in a clever way in the middle of a raging river. You?ve heard this before. These stories are always the same.

Consider Blentec, a company that manufactures commercial and residential blenders. As the story goes, the newly hired marketing manager, George Wright, was walking through the factory one day and noticed the CEO, Tom Dickson, trying to destroy a 2?2 block of wood with an entry-level residential blender. He succeeded. The room was littered with sawdust and chips of wood. Apparently, he did that on a regular basis. It was his way of testing the durability of their products.

George saw the potential immediately. They needed to record it on video! So they started a series called ?Will it blend?? to share the results on YouTube. The start-up costs for the campaign totaled just $85. They started blending all sorts of things. They blended marbles. They blended golf balls. They blended a full size rake! And they also blended an iPhone. Yes, it?s true. They blended an iPhone and it got completely destroyed. It literally turned to dust. On the video, they called it ?iDust.?
What were the results? Sales didn?t double. Sales didn?t triple. Sales soared 500 percent! Why? They demonstrated the capabilities of their product in a clever way in the middle of a raging river. It?s always the same. Bottom line: it worked because it was remarkable! What do you do that?s remarkable? What do you do in your business that?s remarkable?

A woman recently attended a conference where I spoke and she e-mailed me a few days later, all excited. Her business sells premium foods like caviar, truffle mushrooms, and foie gras and she wanted to create a video about her business and put it on YouTube. ?A video.? One video. Why stop at just one video when her company sold 85 products? I told her she should make 85 videos?one for each product! And then optimize each video for the relevant keywords for that particular product.

She never made all 85 videos but she did make 27 of them, and they were all optimized for highly specific keyword phrases like ?black truffle oil.? People are searching for that stuff. They found her videos and each one pointed back to her website. She racked up more than 25,000 views in her first 12 months and her revenue doubled.

When I launched the first edition of this book, I recorded 57 videos, one for almost every chapter (the original book had only 60 chapters). I set up the camera in my office and recorded one chapter after another, and then chopped up the footage into separate videos later. A good friend of mine told me I should change my clothes in between each video. No! Nobody is going to watch all 57 videos. They?re only going to watch one. Each video is optimized for different keywords, based on what that particular chapter is about. So people searching for information on YouTube will find one of my videos and each one points back to my website. Mission accomplished.

Think about your business. What?s the area where your customers are most fascinated? Where do they give you the most animated response? That?s it! Get that on video. Share that on YouTube. Pick an angle or a gimmick to make your videos unique. There are basically three different strategies for creating videos: educate, entertain, or shock.

Educate: The fastest growing content on YouTube is educational how-to content. Every day, the demand for valuable how-to content increases. Teach your prospects how to use your products or services. Teach them how to avoid common mistakes. Teach them about the tips, tricks, and tools that will make their lives easier.

Entertain: People love to be entertained. Humor will always get a warm welcome from YouTube users. Show your prospects the humor in your industry. Show them the irony in your products or services. Find ways to make people laugh while engaging them about your value proposition. Gary Vaynerchuk basically chose a combination of education and entertainment and enjoyed enormous success in the process.

Shock: You want viral? Shock people. We?ve all seen examples of this approach. The ?Will it blend?? campaign by Blentec essentially falls into this category. Their demonstrations were shocking, albeit with some great entertainment sprinkled in. What?s shocking about your product or service? How can you shock your prospects with the results you deliver?

Regardless of which direction you choose, YouTube offers a tremendous opportunity to those who share video content. Find a way to participate with your own business.

YouTube How-to Videos: Implementation Checklist

Demonstrate your expertise on YouTube.
Display the capabilities of your product.
Exhibit the benefits of your service.
Identify what you do that?s remarkable.
Upload new videos regularly.
Educate: provide how-to information.
Entertain: show the humor in your field.
Shock: surprise viewers with wild videos.

Chapter 77: YouTube Video Promotion

Are your YouTube videos getting 100,000 views?

Everybody wants their videos to ?go viral.? They want the video to catch on and spread like wildfire, accumulating hundreds of thousands of views along the way. Turns out, getting a video to ?go viral? is hard work. Don?t get me wrong. There are definitely some videos that just hit it right. They strike a chord and get shared around the globe. But there are also countless great videos that get a few hundred views and then fade out. To give a video the best possible odds of becoming successful, you need to give it a good push at the beginning. There are lots of things you can do to promote YouTube videos and there are companies that specialize in doing just that. What are they doing?

First, make sure the video isn?t too long. These days, we live in an ADHD society. Nobody has any patience anymore. Most of the successful ?viral? videos are between 30 and 45 seconds long. As a rule of thumb, your videos should be no longer than three or four minutes.

Second, ping your network. Once your video is uploaded with an effective title, description, and tags, send it out to your e-mail list. Post it on Facebook. Tweet about it. People enjoy videos and will often take a few minutes to watch yours, if invited. That will get you some initial views.

Third, encourage comments?right on the video itself! Near the end of your video, ask people to leave comments below. Ask them a question. Ask for their input. Also, invite controversy. Controversy leads to more comments and comments improve YouTube rankings.

Fourth, find a high-traffic forum that?s related to your video?s topic and embed your video in a new thread. Use an enticing title and encourage posts. The longer your thread (and video) are in the ?fast water? (see Chapter 53 for full instructions) the more views it?ll rack up. In many cases, you can get a few hundred or a few thousand views by effectively managing your thread on the forum.

Fifth, do the same thing on two or three other forums. These are all independent communities and you can double or triple your results by repeating the exact same steps on multiple communities. Post your video on Facebook Groups and LinkedIn Groups and Google Groups and Yahoo! Groups. Post it anywhere your target audience spends time.

The companies that specialize in this sort of thing generally maintain multiple accounts on all these various platforms, including YouTube itself. By doing so, they can start the initial dialog (via comments) and controversy all by themselves. They can also keep their forum threads active and popular within those communities. Understandably, YouTube tries to limit these types of artificial conversations and will automatically check to see if the various accounts are being managed from the same IP address. That means you?d have to have people in different locations using different Internet connections to do this safely.
My advice? Be careful. It?s important you understand what people are doing. That?s your competition. Whether you decide to employ similar techniques yourself (or hire a company that uses these strategies) is entirely up to you. My objective is to give you a clear picture of how these things happen and then leave the final decision up to you. Ideally, you want your video to make it onto the ?Most Popular? pages on YouTube. They?re featured on the homepage and show the trending videos each day. There are a variety of factors that determine which videos make the cut, including the numbers of views and comments. The point is that once you get to the ?Most Popular? pages, your views soar.

At the end of the day, you work like crazy to get the first few thousand views, and then you get the next 50,000 for free. Once you?re on the ?Most Popular? pages, the exposure explodes. And that?s when you?ll find out if the video has true viral potential. Once you get to that point, the video is circulated widely enough to really take off . . . or not. Some will go to 100,000 views. Others will go to 1,500,000 views. It all depends on the video. Is it catchy? Is it educational? Is it funny? Is it shocking? If so, you could be in for an exciting ride. By the way, once your video gets a bunch of views, YouTube will offer to ?monetize? it with advertisements, giving you a share of the revenue. If your channel does well in general, they?ll offer you an opportunity to become a ?YouTube Partner.? Both will result in revenue and exposure.
Moral: promote your videos! It can change your business.

YouTube Video Promotion: Implementation Checklist

Make your videos short.
After uploading, tell all your friends.
Post it on Facebook and e-mail your list.
Ask for comments?right on the video!
Create a thread on a high-traffic forum.
Embed your video and invite interaction.
Post it to Facebook and LinkedIn groups
Post it to Yahoo! and Google groups.
Try to get it on the ?Most Popular? pages.
If you succeed, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Startup Claims 80% Of Its Facebook Ad Clicks Are Coming From Bots

Screen shot 2012-07-30 at 11.52.41 AMA lot of people like to complain about their experiences on major web platforms such as Facebook, but most of them stick around as users, feeling that the pros outweigh the cons. But Limited Run, a startup that makes a software platform for musicians and labels to sell physical products like vinyl records, says it has reached the final straw with its experience as a small business advertising on Facebook -- and as a result is completely withdrawing its presence on the social networking platform.

Hamilton on pole for revived McLaren

Lewis Hamilton stayed focused on the job that lies ahead after sweeping to a dominant pole position for a revived McLaren team in Saturday's closely-fought qualifying session for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Driving with supreme speed and consistency, the 27-year-old Briton clocked a best time of one minute and 20.953 seconds to top the times ahead of nearest rival Romain Grosjean in a Lotus.

"That was a really good session and I would have been disappointed not to have taken pole," said Hamilton.

"But we will have a lot to do before we have done the job."

France's Grosjean secured his first front row start with a fast lap in the final seconds of a tight session to move ahead of third-placed defending drivers champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull and Hamilton's team-mate Jenson Button.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen was fifth in the second Lotus ahead of championship leader Spaniard Fernando Alonso and his Ferrari team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa.

Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado was eighth ahead of his Williams team-mate Brazilian Bruno Senna and German Nico Hulkenberg in the leading Force India.

For Hamilton, it was a third pole of the year and the 22nd of his career -- and the 150th pole secured by the McLaren team.

"There is no real secret (to Sunday's race), it is the same as anyone else," Hamilton said.

"You have to keep your head cool and make sure you look after your tyres. Tyre strategy will be important tomorrow, and degradation will be interesting."

He continued: "Jenson showed our upgrades are an improvement and hopefully I can show the same thing tomorrow. We have a long race tomorrow so lots can happen, but we need to keep cool."

He added that the team's recent upgrades allowed him to push harder than he has been able to in recent grands prix, 'empowering' him throughout qualifying.

"It has been a really positive weekend so far, we can finally see the upgrades working this weekend, being able to put car in places I previously wasn't able to," said Hamilton.

"I am always striving for the perfect lap, and to get that is intense and exciting and if you get it right it is incredibly empowering.

"This weekend we have obviously had pace, we knew it was possible, but it was just a case of doing it. Considering we have had pace all weekend, missing pole would have been disappointing, so I am happy I have done it.

"This is motor racing. We are not saying we are relaxed about it, we know we have a lot of work to do. We must make sure we start that work this weekend.

"Starting from the front row is special. We know overtaking is difficult so the first job is done. Hopefully tomorrow we will keep our race pace and be able to save our tyres as much as we want and get some good battles with the guy at the front."

Vettel said that it was not his new engine map, as required by the FIA, but a poor balance from his Red Bull RB8 that had been the key factor in his performance.

"I don't think the engine map really affected us as much as people think," the German said.

"We were struggling a little to find the balance through the weekend but it has nothing to do with the mapping.

"We seem to have lost a little something compared to yesterday, so we've come into qualifying and failed to improve session-by-session."

VENITISM: INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE AND SABOTAGE

China has made industrial espionage an integral part of its economic policy,
stealing company secrets to help it leapfrog over foreign competitors to further
its goal of becoming the world's largest economy. What has been happening over
the course of the last five years is that China has been hacking its way into
every corporation it can find listed in Dun& Bradstreet!

Chinese are stealing entire industries. This may be the biggest transfer of
wealth in a short period of time that the world has ever seen. The hackers are
part of a massive espionage ring codenamed Byzantine Foothold by U.S.
investigators. They specialize in infiltrating networks using phishing e-mails
laden with spyware, often passing on the task of exfiltrating data to others.
The hacking is centrally coordinated in China. Byzantine Foothold is made up of
one hundred hackers.

Chinese hackers provide unique room service, infiltrating internet service
providers to the world's leading hotels, gaining access to millions of
confidential messages of traveling executives, as well as to the victims'
corporate networks. They've also infiltrated major brothels of the West,
gaining personal information on top executives.

Governments and gangs realize malware is much cheaper than mainstream warfare.
Malware, short for malicious software, consists of programming designed to
disrupt operation, gather information that leads to loss of privacy or
exploitation, gain unauthorized access to system resources, and other abusive
behavior. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware,
dishonest adware, scareware, crimeware, rootkits, and other malicious and
unwanted software or program. In law, malware is sometimes known as computer
contaminant.

Computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a
computer. A virus can spread from one computer to another. Viruses can increase
their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files. In order to
replicate itself, a virus must be permitted to execute code and write to memory.
For this reason, many viruses attach themselves to executable files that may be
part of legitimate programs. If a user attempts to launch an infected program,
the virus' code may be executed simultaneously.

The more sophisticated a virus is, the more exciting it is to crack its
algorithm. There's a little professional respect involved, too. But it has
nothing to do with enthusiasm. Every virus is a crime. A cyber war can't be
won; it only has perpetrators and victims. Out there, all we can do is prevent
everything from spinning out of control.

Based on the number of programmed viruses, Russia is in third place behind China
and Latin America. Russians are also among the most sophisticated
and advanced players in criminal cyber activity. These days, they invent viruses
and complex Trojan programs on demand. They launder money through the Internet.
However, the largest number of harmful programs are written in Chinese. This
means that they can be coming directly from the People's Republic, but also from
Singapore, Malaysia and even California, where there are Mandarin-speaking
hackers.

In general, the crime level in India is low. It's probably a matter of the
mentality. India and China have roughly the same population, the same computer
density, a similar standard of living and similar religious roots. But China
spits out viruses like they were coming off an assembly line.

Americans are now openly saying that they would respond to a large-scale,
destructive Internet attack with a classic military strike. But what will they
do if the cyber attack is launched against the United States from within their
own country? Everything depends on computers these days: the energy supply,
airplanes, trains. The Net has become a war zone, a platform for professional
attacks on critical infrastructure.

Governments are behind many of the virus attacks! Russian spammers directed
special computer networks known as botnets against Estonia. It became the
prototype of a belligerent cyber attack on a country. The attackers didn't just
cripple government websites; they also sent so many spam e-mails that the entire
Internet channel to Estonia quickly collapsed. The country was cut off from the
world. The banking system, trade, transportation, everything ground to a halt.

Stuxnet, a computer virus developed by CIA and Israeli Intelligence, can
infiltrate highly secure computers. Stuxnet entered the global political arena in June
2010. The virus had attacked computers at Iran's Natanz nuclear facility, where
scientists are enriching uranium, and manipulated the centrifuges to make them
self-destruct. It is a digital bunker buster. The virus represents a
fundamentally new addition to the arsenal of modern warfare. It enables a
military attack using a computer program tailored to a specific target.

Internet security firms have raised the specter of a new round of cyber warfare
with the detection of the Duqu virus, a relative of last Stuxnet. Duqu's
detection comes amid growing talk in Europe about launching pre-emptive strikes
to stop cyberattacks before they happen. But the nature of malware like Duqu and
Stuxnet make pre-emptive strikes unrealistic.

The problem is you can't really say where they come from. You need evidence
about who is behind an attack before you can strike preemptively, but you can
never be sure. You can't attack infrastructure, or even send in a stealth
bomber, because any information about a location could be a red herring.

Duqu is not spreading like Stuxnet. Duqu was carefully placed and can be
controlled remotely. Duqu has been used to target only a limited number of
organizations for the specific assets. Its warhead is not aimed at the
technology industry. Duqu is being used to steal information; it's industrial
espionage.

Flame is a new virus developed by CIA and Israeli Intelligence, much stronger
than Stuxnet and Duqu. Flame can gather data files, remotely change settings on
computers, turn on PC microphones to record conversations, take screen shots and
log instant messaging chats. Both Flame and Stuxnet appear to infect machines by
exploiting the same flaw in the Windows operating system and employ a similar
way of spreading.

Flame stays hidden because it is so different to the viruses, worms, and trojans
that most security programs are designed to catch. Flame tries to work out which
security scanning software was installed on a target machine and then disguises
itself as a type of computer file that an individual anti-virus program would
not usually suspect of harboring malicious code. Flame also escapes detection
because it is so tightly targeted. It's much much easier writing protection for
a piece of malware than analyzing what it actually does. Dissecting Flame to
find out all of its quirks and functionality will take time.

Kaspersky Lab unearthed Flame. While the espionage toolkit infected systems
across the Middle East, Iran appears to have been its primary target. United
States, UK, India, Israel, China and Russia are among the countries capable of
developing such software, which costs at least a hundred million euros to
develop. Software that manages industrial systems or transportation or power
grids or air traffic must be based on secure operating systems.

Malware makers can hide their tracks using spoofing, VPNs, proxy services, and
other means to make it look like they are based in any number of countries -
when in truth they are somewhere completely different.

The government of China has made trillions of euros doing industrial espionage
with malware developed by Western corporations! This is an unfair and illegal
comparative advantage. Moreover, China has infiltrated all the infosystems of
all governments and all international organizations! Now Uncle Chen knows
everything about Uncle Sam, Uncle Ken (UK), and Fourth Reich (EU)! But nobody
can penetrate the Firewall of China, which was developed by Cisco!

The West has developed electronic weapons that could be used to defend the West
against cyber attacks or prevent them. The West is prepared to strike first in a
cyber conflict. Cyber arms grow out of control. No government can guarantee it
can protect a country or entity against cyber attack. In future wars, there will
be a cyber element. Countries hope that if they threaten to use missiles to
retaliate against a cyber attack, others will think twice about launching one.

After security experts learned that Flame had infected computer networks in Iran
and even systems in neighboring Arab countries, its creators have dispatched a
suicide command that killed off the virus.
The suicide code was designed to completely remove Flame from the compromised
computer, but in doing so it does more than just eliminate the infection. The
prompt that kills off Flame removes so much of the virus' information that
researchers will be unable to study the outbreak.

The module contains a long list of files and folders that are used by Flame. It
locates every file on disk, removes it, and subsequently overwrites the disk
with random characters to prevent anyone from obtaining information about the
infection. This component contains a routine to generate random characters to
use in the overwriting operation. It tries to leave no traces of the infection
behind.

Very early on there was some sharing between authors of both Stuxnet and Flame.
Obama authorized the continuation of a cyberwar program aimed at Iran that had
been initiated during the presidency of George Bush. Given the ties between the
two malicious programs, the killing off of Flame could very well be an attempt
by the government to give researchers less time to further find a relationship
between the viruses.

Eugene Kaspersky declares that cyber terrorism can bring the end of
civilization! Doomsday scenarios are a common occurrence now, but coming from
Kaspersky they should raise alarm bells. A global Internet blackout and
crippling attacks against key infrastructure are among two possible
cyber-pandemics. Kaspersky is afraid cyber terrorism is just beginning. Very
soon, many countries around the world will know it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Kaspersky is afraid it will be the end of the world as we know it!

Kaspersky believes the evolution from cyber war to cyber terrorism comes from
the indiscriminate nature of cyber weapons. Very much like a modern-day
Pandora's Box, Flame and other forms of malware cannot be controlled upon
release. Faced with a replicating threat that knows no national boundaries,
cyber weapons can take down infrastructure around the world, hurting scores of
innocent victims along the way.

Apple U.K. doesn't have to post apology to Samsung... yet

Though a U.K. court recently ordered Apple to post a statement on the web and in papers saying Samsung's Galaxy Tab line didn't copy the iPad design, it seems Apple doesn't have to do that, at least not just yet. According to Jeremy Hodges, reporting for Reuters:

Cupertino, California-based Apple appealed saying it didn?t want to advertise for its rival. The order is stayed until its appeal against the ruling is heard in October.

This follows the judge in the trial saying Samsung's Galaxy Tab "wasn't cool enough" to be confused with an iPad. Though, apparently, some Best Buy shoppers don't have their cool-dar as finely tuned...

(There's still time for you to get into in on our help write an Apple apology to Samsung contest -- so head on over!")

Starbucks cuts outlook as world economy struggles

(AP) ? Starbucks managed to sell pricey lattes and wrangle its way out of the Great Recession stronger than ever. Now the coffee chain is again being pressured by a slowing global economy.

The Seattle-based coffee seller said Thursday that net income in its fiscal third quarter rose 19 percent from a year ago. But Wall Street analysts expected more, and were further disappointed when the company cut its outlook for the current quarter because of a recent slowdown in U.S. customer traffic and persisting challenges in hard-hit European regions.

Shares slumped 10 percent in after-hours trading.

Starbucks said global revenue at cafes open at least a year rose 6 percent in its most recent quarter. The increase in the metric ? important because it strips out the effect of recently opened and closed stores ? was driven by a 12 percent increase in China and Asia and a 7 percent increase in the Americas.

In June and July, however, the company noted that traffic had slowed amid persistently high unemployment and shaky consumer sentiment.

"Traffic trends are noticeably down in many parts of the U.S.," said Troy Alstead, the company's chief financial officer, of the quarter that ended July 1. That trend continued into July.

In the European market, where Starbucks is struggling to turn around its business, the sales figure was flat.

"Europe has been a challenge for us all year and continues to be," Alstead said. He noted that the flat sales were an improvement from the previous quarter, however, when the figure slipped 1 percent.

To perk up its business in the region, Starbucks has been instituting measures similar to those it took during the downturn in the U.S. a few years ago, such as introducing loyalty programs and improving service.

It's also considering closing unprofitable stores in Europe, which could result in charges of up to $20 million in the current quarter. The company noted that closures in the U.S. during the recession helped strengthen the company.

"We have great confidence that we are going to be able to turn Europe around," said CEO Howard Schultz. Still, the company says its store expansions next year will be focused in the United States and the fast-growing market in China.

But a slowing global economy isn't the only concern for the company. As Starbucks faces increasing competition from fast-food chains offering specialty coffees, it is moving to expand beyond its ubiquitous cafes. This year, it has plans to expand its push into the fast growing premium juice and single-cup coffee markets.

For the three months ended July 1, the company said it earned $333.1 million, or 43 cents per share. That's compared with $279.1 million, or 36 cents per share, a year ago.

Total revenue rose 13 percent to $3.3 billion.

Analysts on average expected a profit of 45 cents per share on revenue of $3.34 billion. The higher revenue was the result of increased customer traffic and customers spending more per visit, Starbucks said.

For the current quarter, Starbucks cut its profit outlook to 44 cents to 45 cents per share from a range of 46 cents to 47 cents per share. Analysts were predicting 48 cents per share.

Shares dropped $5.34 to $47.07 in after-hours trading. During the trading day, shares had gained $1.99, or 4 percent, close at $52.40.

Hopes high for many NFL teams as camps open

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Training camp is under way around the NFL and every team believes it has a chance to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The New York Giants proved for the second time in five years you don't have to dominate in the regular season to win the Super Bowl. Just get into the postseason and play your best football in January. The Green Bay Packers learned that lesson the hard way after going 15-1 and getting knocked out in the divisional round.

The next six weeks will provide a reality check for several teams. They'll answer position battles, roster questions and learn if they can be legitimate contenders.

There was plenty of change during the offseason, though things were back to normal and teams held their minicamps, Organized Team Activities and workout programs, unlike last year when labor problems ruled the day. Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow switched uniforms. Chad Ochocinco switched his name back to Johnson. Several teams switched coaches.

Let's examine six of the top questions going into training camp:

___

HOW DO THE BOUNTY SUSPENSIONS AFFECT THE SAINTS?

Coach Sean Payton was banished for the season along with linebacker Jonathan Vilma, leaving the New Orleans Saints short-handed in the wake of the bounty scandal. The Saints are coming off a 13-3 season and have a happy Drew Brees back in the fold after he signed a five-year, $100 million deal that gives him the highest average annual pay in league history. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt will run the team until he begins serving a six-game suspension at the start of the regular season. There will be an adjustment period in the preseason, but the Saints should be in good shape with Brees running the offense and new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo calling the signals on defense.

___

DOES PEYTON MANNING PICK UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF IN INDIANAPOLIS?

The Denver Broncos are counting heavily on Manning to play like the 10-time Pro Bowl QB he was during his 13 seasons with the Colts after giving him a $96 million contract. But the four-time NFL MVP missed all of last season following four neck operations. Manning not only was one of the greatest QBs of all time before his injury, he also was the second-most durable. Manning started 227 consecutive games, including the postseason, from 1998-2010. Health aside, Manning's biggest adjustment will be getting his timing down with his new receivers and building a rapport with the rest of the offense.

___

WILL THE NEW YORK GIANTS FINALLY AVOID A SUPER BOWL HANGOVER?

If the Giants hope to repeat, they'll have to do something they've never done the season after winning the Super Bowl. That is, win a playoff game. The Giants failed to reach the playoffs the year after winning their first two Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990. After winning it in 2007, they followed that up with a 12-4 season but lost to the Eagles in the divisional round. The Giants have holes on offense. They lost their starting right tackle and tight end, need a backup running back and depth at wide receiver. But they do have Eli Manning, and he's coming off his best statistical season. They also have a strong defense that flourished in the playoffs after allowing 400 points in the regular season.

___

CAN THE DREAM TEAM BECOME A DYNASTY?

Last year, Vince Young anointed the Philadelphia Eagles a "Dream Team." They failed miserably to live up to the hype, going 8-8 and missing the playoffs. Now Michael Vick raised eyebrows with an outrageous comment, saying the Eagles can develop into a "dynasty." Those are bold words from a QB who has two career playoff wins. Moreover, the Eagles haven't won a playoff game since 2008 and the franchise hasn't won a championship since 1960. The term "dynasty" is reserved for teams that win multiple Super Bowls with the same core of players in a short period. The Eagles obviously have a long way to go before they can ever be mentioned in the same class with Terry Bradshaw's Steelers, Joe Montana's 49ers or Tom Brady's Patriots.

___

WHAT WILL TIM TEBOW'S IMPACT BE ON THE JETS?

From the second the New York Jets acquired Tebow from Denver, people have wondered if he can coexist with Mark Sanchez. There's sure to be a QB controversy on Broadway at some point this season. The Jets' plan for Tebow should become more clear during training camp and the preseason. There's speculation he'll replace Sanchez in the red zone or just enter the game in a variation of the wildcat formation. Perhaps they'll use a bulked-up Tebow on special teams as the punt protector. He may also get a few carries out of the backfield. Whatever the plan, and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano may hold off on showing most of it until the games actually count, the spotlight will be on Tebow this summer.

___

WHO WILL SIGN DONOVAN McNABB OR T.O.?

It seems like forever ago that McNabb and Terrell Owens were feuding less than a year after leading the Eagles to a NFC title. The former friends-turned-enemies have more in common these days. They're two of the most accomplished players on the unemployment line. McNabb's career has fizzled since the six-time Pro Bowl QB was traded from Philadelphia to Washington in 2010. He was cut by the Redskins and Vikings the last two years and finds himself looking for a job as a backup. If a starter goes down in camp, McNabb may get a call. Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Owens is hoping to prove he's still a capable receiver after missing all of last season recovering from knee surgery. Owens was released by the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League in May.

Japan rejoices at 'Miracle in Glasgow'

Japan was euphoric Friday after their Blue Samurai scored a stunning 1-0 victory over champions Spain in one of the greatest upsets in Olympic football history.

Newspapers hailed Thursday's win as the "Miracle in Glasgow", reviving memories of their famous "Miracle in Miami" victory over Brazil at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The first-half goal from Yuki Otsu gives his side a great chance of reaching the knockout rounds.

"We won! We actually won!" the Nikkan Sports daily roared on its front page, with nearly all of Japan's newspapers and broadcasters splashing dramatic headlines and photos of the jubilant squad.

The Mainichi Daily's headline boasted "Otsu sinks unbeatable Armada" while the Sports Nippon said: "In a shock to the mother nation and to the world, the 'Miracle in Glasgow' happened in the opening match of the Olympics."

"Japan blow away Spain," the top-selling Yomiuri Shimbun said, with a photo of an exuberant Otsu beside a Spanish defender lying on the pitch.

"Japan's male Olympic football squad have put in poor performances in recent times. But they fought bravely against Olympic champion hopefuls Spain and secured the admirable victory," the Yomiuri said.

It described the underdog win as a "gold star that will go down in Japanese football history", using a term usually reserved for an upset victory in sumo wrestling, one of the nation's favourite sports.

A surprise victory by the Japanese women's side against the United States at the World Cup final last year was also huge news in a country reeling from the devastating quake-tsunami disaster.

But the influential Asahi Shimbun on Friday said the men's win was no miracle, chalking up their success to a solid performance.

Tokyo construction worker Yoshiyuki Sakai, 53, said the win might prompt more Japanese to watch the Games, and help boost hopes for the nation's athletes.

"I don't know many of the players (in the men's football squad), but I think it's great that Japan won," said Sakai, who stayed up on Thursday night to see the match which started around 11:00 pm local time (1400 GMT).

"I thought Japan could have scored more goals...The win lifted people's spirits and I think more people will be interested in watching the Olympics now," he told AFP.

The government also got a word in Friday with Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura hailing the men's victory, after the women's side also notched up a win over Canada this week.

"After the great news about the women's team, it is truly a great start that the men also won against mighty Spain," he told reporters.

The fin whale, under more threat in the Mediterranean than thought

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Until now it was thought that fin whales in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea made up part of the distribution of this species of whale in the Mediterranean. However, an international team of scientists led by a Spaniard has revealed that their population has been overestimated by including specimens from the Atlantic that visit at certain times the western Mediterranean, where the noise generated by human activity affects their survival.

In 1991 the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) population in the Mediterranean Sea was estimated at 3500 specimens. A new study, published in Marine Mammal Science, now shows that this record included specimens from the Atlantic, and suggests that the distribution and size of the current population of this whale, which is threatened with extinction, should be reconsidered.

"The Mediterranean population has easily been overestimated, as the census included the whole of the southeast Mediterranean, incorporating Atlantic fin whales within the Mediterranean census", reported to SINC Manuel Castellote, the lead author of the study and researcher in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA), Seattle (USA).

The research team analysed 29,822 hours of recordings of the songs emitted by these marine mammals -which can reach a length of 27 metres, and are the second biggest cetaceans in the world- in order to identify the distribution limits of the Mediterranean fin whale and those of the north Atlantic fin whale in the Straits of Gibraltar, where the two populations overlap.

The results reveal that the presence of fin whales in the areas of the Straits of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea -southwest of the Mediterranean- is exclusively limited to Atlantic fin whales that visit the Mediterranean Sea, above all in autumn and spring.

As a consequence, "the population of Mediterranean fin whales presents a much more limited distribution than currently described, excluding a significant region of the western Mediterranean", confirms Castellote, who highlights the fact that this region had previously been identified as a feeding area.

The importance of the study is the critical state situation of the whale in these waters where it is the only mysticete (it has a baleen instead of teeth). The species is particularly susceptible to collisions with merchant vessels and ferries, which is the main cause of fin whale mortality.

Among other threats, an "insufficient" knowledge of their basic ecological characteristics such as distribution and population size stands out. For the biologist, "from a conservation point of view, it is essential to understand the geographical distribution and population size of the Mediterranean fin whale, because if not, appropriate management methods cannot be implemented".

The danger of undersea noise

Maritime traffic and geophysical exploration -including the search for hydrocarbons- "drastically" reduces the song effectiveness -linked to reproduction and which propagates hundreds of kilometres beneath the Sea- of the whales, which are also the group of marine mammals with the greatest acoustic sensitivity at low frequencies. "The noise generated through human activity in the oceans leads to possible chronic effects on the health of this species", Castellote states.

To control these threats the same researchers identified in another report the possible impact of noise generated by human activity on the acoustic behaviour and geographical movement of the fin whales in various regions of the Mediterranean Sea and in the northeast Atlantic.

After analysing 20,547 hours of recordings of the sounds emitted by the whales, the study published in Biological Conservation indicated that the whales modified the characteristics of their songs in order to try to reduce the impact of noise on their propagation.

In addition the researchers recorded a massive displacement of fin whales, triggered by the noise from geophysical prospecting at a distance of 285 km from the study area. "These recurrent displacements, together with the changes in acoustic behaviour, could increase the energy expenditure and reduce the reproductive success of whales affected by the noise", the expert indicated.

In the long-term the consequences for these mammals are clear: chronic effects which impact on their survival emerge. "Noise in the marine medium, despite being recognised as a significant pollutant, is far from being controlled and regulated within the waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Spain", warns Castellote.

The Issues with QR Codes: Why Consumers Need to Think Critically ...

by Brandon Laur

What harm can QR codes pose? This is the question presented to a group of participants during Social Media Camp 2012 in Victoria, British Columbia. As a conference dedicated to social media it would be ?unreasonable for the participants to not address current security concerns with social media. Social media security is a subject area where the average internet user ?knows little about. It is much easier to believe in a ?just-world? online, then to take a few moments to critically assess what is going on behind the user interface. So what is going on?

Communication online is becoming more open and more available and the end users are generally forced to go with the flow of new technologies, without second thought. So again what harm can result through the use of QR codes?

In contemporary society, people manoeuvre throughout daily life on autopilot. From a security standpoint, potential arises for the criminal element to exploit this predictable behaviour, more particularly the cyber criminal aims to exploit the lack of critical thinking. Examples of phishing and scamming websites are a popular ?instance of how scammers rely on the conditioned response of the user to automatically populate user credentials, because the digital citizen is so accustomed to always logging on. From emails, blogs, websites, and social networks they forget to critically assess how and where before pressing the log on button to what or who this information is being monitored by.

The tinyurl, as the name describes is a shortened web link of its longer source. An example of such links looks much like this http://tinyurl.com/23nrvsz, this link actually leads to http://www.personalprotectionsystems.ca. From the viewpoint of the attacker this provides the perfect opportunity to launch a phishing attack against the user who clicks on the link thinking it actually leads to their social network or online bank. These shortened links provides users the ease of access they insist of having.

Another issue internet users fail to recognize is the data created from just visiting a website. The internet is based on the rates technical devices are connecting to websites. It is in the best interest of the blogger and e-commerce business to collect information on their customers.?These businesses collect ?information on current users ?when they connect to their website. Sometime the business model of companies online is purely based on collecting and trading information about customers.

A growing ?trend of ?social media tools is the ?use of ?QR (Quick Response) codes. This ?tool functions much like a barcode in retail stores. Utilizing the camera of a smartphone, an internet Just-World Phenomenon: the belief that doing good deeds in life will result in good thing happening to oneself connection, and proper software to read the QR code, allows the user to connect onto a website. This connection via camera phone allows the smartphone user to quickly access the website without typing the URL. The risk comes from users not knowing what site QR codes will link to. Much like the tinyurl, a QR relies on the trust of the user to believe what is advertised with the code will convey what is expect when using such tools.

Malicious websites have the potential to inject dangerous code into a smartphone just by connecting to the website known as a ?drive-by-download?. ?Take for example ?the cyber criminal who has printed off a variety of ?QR codes linking to a malicious website ?with the purpose of pasting these codes over legitimate QR codes emulating the genuine code in order to deceive consumers into compromising their devices.

The purpose of the following experiments is to exemplify how consumer expectation and ?conditioning is dangerous. Two separate experiments were undertaken during the Social Media Camp 2012 in Victoria British Columbia. Each test was proposed as a learning tool for attendees at the conference. The first test was to determine the ?number of ?responses of attendees who interacted with seven posters spread throughout clear sightlines in the Victoria ?Conference Center.

Each poster contained a QR code with the title of the ?conference and follow-up information below it informing participants on how the technology works (see figure 1).

The second test involved business card sized printouts of a different QR Code linking to a website with the same information ?as the website for the poster experiment. After users ?connected online via the QR Code, they are then directed to a web page ?with a skull and crossbones icon. Further information is provided; vaguely prompting the user about the potential insecurities of QR codes. After the user read the information provided, the user is also encouraged to attend a security talk at the conference that will provide further information to the security threats (see Figure 2).

Experiment one was in progress throughout the full two days the conference took place. The purpose of this strategy was to receive the most ?participation of the attendees as possible.?Experiment Two was directed towards a small subsection of the whole attending population.

The period of time the experiment took place was within a 90 minute presentation on social media security. Most user activity was active before the presentation as everyone was entering the lecture room, and as the presentation was beginning. ?Each ?method of the QR ?websites were setup with an analytics tool to analyse the data user devices provide to internet services, unknowingly from the individual who use such services. Data from the conference can be viewed below (see Chart 1).

Although the data collected was not the initial purpose of the experiments. Examining the information gathered provides an interesting analysis of the majority of users who participated were IPhone users. Although the total attendee count is unknown and the number of handheld devices capable of utilizing such technology is also unknown. The result is that a total of 31 people would have potentially compromised their devices if the QR codes where indeed malicious. Regardless of the sample size ?there is an issue with ?accepting technology as it is without considering a ?what if? scenario.

The purpose of utilizing QR codes during the social media conference was to demonstrate the insecurities of such technologies to the conference attendees. As the largest social media?conference in Canada, this was the perfect setting to launch such experiments. If anything was learned from the experiments examined is that a substantial quantity of information relating to the user is given away when attending websites; furthermore, not knowing what the end user is accepting opens the ?potential to compromise the users devices. Security is a ?spectrum?between ?convenience and safety. It is up to the consumer to understand the degrees of the spectrum and place themselves accordingly to where they are comfortable, after they understand the risks involved.

Brandon Laur has written specifically to the Dangers of QR codes. This was based on an Internet and Social Media Safety Presentation that he, along with Personal Protection Systems, conducted at the ?Social Media Camp 2012? which is the largest event of its kind in North America.
