MAME returns to the App Store this time hidden in a game called Gridlee

MAME returns to the App Store this time hidden in a game called GridleeA new game has been released in the App Store that offers a little more than meets the eye. Gridlee was a game that was originally developed for the arcade back in 1982 and never released; that is until now. It is a really simple game as you would imagine as it dates back to 1982; what?s interesting here however is that it is built on the MAME4iOS engine. The information comes from Touch Arcade whose eagle eyed forum members made the discovery.

When word of this hit our forums, readers were quick to pull out iExplore and begin digging about the app's directory structure looking for a ROM folder. Well, it's in there, and sure enough, if one copies other MAME ROMs into that folder, the Gridlee app starts up with the standard MAME4iOS ROM listing, allowing for a great many games beyond just Gridlee to be played on the iPhone or iPad in this Universal app.

This is going to be pulled from the App Store very quickly so if you want the opportunity to grab a working MAME emulator for your iPhone or iPad get this free game now. iMAME was originally released in the App Store back in 2011 with a small bundle of included games. When Apple discovered that more could be added by dropping ROM?s into a folder, it was pulled soon after. This game is no different so expect a very short shelf life. Connery Ice Rink Announces the 2013 FMC Ice Sports Skaters ...

The Connery Ice Rink, operated by recreational facility management company, FMC Ice Sports, announces the 2013 FMC Ice Sports Skaters Scholarship. Developed in 1993 to assist students who demonstrate excellence on and off the ice, the Skaters Scholarship has since awarded over $300,000 to 360 well deserving high school seniors who are active in ice hockey, figure skating or recreational skating.

Love triumphs over hate to make exotic new compound: Compound could be useful in batteries, semiconductors, memory devices

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Northwestern University graduate student Jonathan Barnes had a hunch for creating an exotic new chemical compound, and his idea that the force of love is stronger than hate proved correct. He and his colleagues are the first to permanently interlock two identical tetracationic rings that normally are repelled by each other. Many experts had said it couldn't be done.

On the surface, the rings hate each other because each carries four positive charges (making them tetracationic). But Barnes discovered by introducing radicals (unpaired electrons) onto the scene, the researchers could create a love-hate relationship in which love triumphs.

Unpaired electrons want to pair up and be stable, and it turns out the attraction of one ring's single electrons to the other ring's single electrons is stronger than the repelling forces.

The process links the rings not by a chemical bond but by a mechanical bond, which, once in place, cannot easily be torn asunder.

The study detailing this new class of stable organic radicals will be published Jan. 25 by the journal Science.

"It's not that people have tried and failed to put these two rings together -- they just didn't think it was possible," said Sir Fraser Stoddart, a senior author of the paper. "Now this molecule has been made. I cannot overemphasize Jonathan's achievement -- it is really outside the box. Now we are excited to see where this new chemistry leads us."

Sir Fraser is the Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. In the late 1980s, he was one of the early pioneers to introduce an additional type of bond, the mechanical bond, into chemical compounds.

The new Northwestern compound has attractive electronic characteristics and can be made quickly and inexpensively. Down the road, it may be possible to expand this first linked pair into a longer chain-like polymer where this methodology could be useful in new technologies for batteries, semiconductors and electronic memory devices.

Driven by curiosity, Barnes only began to look at the radical chemistry of the ring cyclobis (paraquat-p-phenylene) two years ago, nearly 25 years after the ring was first made.

"I wondered what would happen if we took it all the way to the max," said Barnes, the paper's first author and a member of Stoddart's group. "Can we take two of these rings, each with four positive charges, and make them live together?"

The rings repel each other like the positive poles of two magnets. Barnes saw an opportunity where he thought he could tweak the chemistry by using radicals to overcome the hate between the two rings.

"We made these rings communicate and love each other under certain conditions, and once they were mechanically interlocked, the bond could not be broken," Barnes said.

Barnes' first strategy -- adding electrons to temporarily reduce the charge and bring the two rings together -- worked the first time he tried it. He, Stoddart and their colleagues started with a full ring and a half ring that they then closed up around the first ring (using some simple chemistry), creating the mechanical bond.

When the compound is oxidized and electrons lost, the strong positive forces come roaring back -- "It's hate on all the time," Barnes said -- but then it is too late for the rings to be parted. "That's the beauty of this system," he added.

Most organic radicals possess short lifetimes, but this unusual radical compound is stable in air and water. The compound tucks the electrons away inside the structure so they can't react with anything in the environment. The tight mechanical bond endures despite the unfavorable electrostatic interactions.

The two interlocked rings house an immense amount of charge in a mere cubic nanometer of space. The compound, a homo[2]catenane, can adopt one of six oxidation states and can accept up to eight electrons in total.

"Anything that accepts this many electrons has possibilities for batteries," Barnes said.

"Applications beckon," Stoddart agreed. "Now we need to spend more time with materials scientists and people who make devices to see how this amazing compound can be used."

But businessman Gareth Morgan has set up a website called Cats to Go, as he believes Kiwi cats are killing too much.

Murderous felines?!?!!?! No, Morgan thinks cats have killed off kiwis (the bird) and penguins (also a bird).

Morgan says in the land before time cats, native birds did not have any predators in New Zealand and the skies and grounds were littered with so many birds, ornithologists would have super bird watching boners!

Now, cats have ruined all that and he thinks it's time for the kitties to go. Morgan doesn't say your cat needs to be IMMEDIATELY euthanized, but he demands they be locked up 24 hours a day indoors and that no other cats join homes.

Yeah, luckily for the cats, most people view this as animal racism and on Morgan's website, 72 percent of people would NOT give up their cat and will buy and adopt more cats in the future.

Vitamin D holds promise in battling a deadly breast cancer

Jan. 22, 2013 ? In research published in the Jan. 17 issue of The Journal of Cell Biology, a team led by Susana Gonzalo, Ph.D., assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Saint Louis University, has discovered a molecular pathway that contributes to triple-negative breast cancer, an often deadly and treatment resistant form of cancer that tends to strike younger women. In addition, Gonzalo and her team identified vitamin D and some protease inhibitors as possible new therapies and discovered a set of three biomarkers that can help to identify patients who could benefit from the treatment.

In the recent breakthrough, which was funded in part by a $500,000 Department of Defense grant, Gonzalo's lab identified one pathway that is activated in breast cancers with the poorest prognosis, such as those classified as triple-negative. These cancers often strike younger women and are harder to treat than any other type of breast cancer. Women who are born with BRCA1 gene mutations are at increased risk for developing breast and ovarian cancers within their lifetime, and the tumors that arise are frequently the triple-negative type. Although chemotherapy is the most effective treatment for triple-negative breast cancer, it has profound secondary effects. Understanding the biology of triple-negative breast cancers will help to develop less toxic therapeutic strategies.

The Science

Experiments performed in Gonzalo's laboratory, in collaboration with the laboratories of Xavier Matias-Guiu and Adriana Duso (IRBLleida, Spain), showed that activation of this novel pathway not only allows tumor cells to grow unchecked, but also explains the reduced sensitivity of these types of tumors to current therapeutic strategies. Importantly, vitamin D plays a role in turning off this pathway, providing a safe and cost-effective strategy to fight these types of tumors.

For molecular biologists like Gonzalo who look for answers below the cellular level to discover why some people develop cancer, the search often involves tracing a chain of events to try to understand cause and effect of the behavior between several genes and the proteins which they express. In order to understand these complex pathways, researchers often turn levels of proteins on or off by expressing one gene or suppressing another. Part of a researcher's challenge is determining what the function of each component of a pathway is.

The cell employs a complex mechanism to protect genetic information and ensure that damaged DNA is not passed on to daughter cells. Cells have built in checkpoints and fail safes to ensure the accuracy of their DNA code and are able to slow or stop their own proliferation if the information is compromised. Loss of these checkpoints and the accumulation of damaged DNA often leads to cancer.

The Pathway

BRCA1 is a well-established tumor suppressor gene. Women who carry mutations in this gene have a high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Tumors that arise often lack expression of three receptors: estrogen, progesterone and HER2 (thus, "triple-negative"), and do not respond to hormone therapy.

BRCA1 is important because it is involved in repairing DNA double-strand breaks, a kind of DNA damage that is especially dangerous for the integrity of our genome. BRCA1 also is involved in cell-cycle checkpoints after damage, which are control mechanisms during cell proliferation that make sure the DNA information has been accurately replicated and transferred to the daughter cells. Thus, BRCA1 is considered a safeguard of the genome.

Loss of BRCA1 is bad news for the information contained in a cell's genetic blueprint. It results in genomic instability characterized by unrepaired DNA breaks and chromosomal aberrations that compromise cell viability. How BRCA1-mutated cells are able to form tumors has been a long-standing question. Investigators recently showed that loss of another DNA repair factor, 53BP1, allows proliferation and survival of BRCA1-deficient cells. In addition, decreased levels of 53BP1 were observed in triple-negative breast cancers, and correlated with resistance to drugs at the forefront of cancer treatment, such as PARP inhibitors.

Gonzalo's team has found a pathway responsible for the loss of 53BP1 in breast cancers with poor prognosis, specifically BRCA1 mutated and triple-negative. It turns out that loss of BRCA1 increases the expression of a protease, known as cathepsin L (CTSL), which causes the degradation of 53BP1. Cells that have lost both BRCA1 and 53BP1 have the ability to repair DNA, maintain the integrity of the genome, and proliferate. Thus, the protease helps cells with faulty BRCA1 to survive.

The Fix

If lowering the levels of 53BP1 allows BRCA1 deficient cells to thrive and do their worst, increasing the levels of the protein offers a promising strategy for treatment of breast tumors.

So, how to do this? In previous research, Gonzalo's team showed that vitamin D inhibits CTSL-mediated degradation of 53BP1 in non-tumor cells, as efficiently as specific CTSL inhibitors. This time, they found that treatment of BRCA1-deficient tumor cells with vitamin D restores high levels of 53BP1, which results in increased genomic instability and reduced proliferation. Importantly, their evidence suggests that vitamin D treatment might restore the sensitivity to PARP inhibitors in patients who become resistant. Thus, a combination of vitamin D and PARP inhibitors could represent a novel therapeutic strategy for breast cancers with poor prognosis.

So, with this chain of events, Gonzalo and colleagues demonstrated a pathway by which triple-negative breast cancers proliferate: BRCA1-deficient cells activate CTSL which minimizes levels of 53BP1 to overcome genomic instability and growth arrest.

The Patients

In a final exceptionally useful discovery, Gonzalo and collaborators found that high levels of nuclear CTSL and low levels of 53BP1 and nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) are a clear marker that identifies certain triple-negative breast cancer patients, biomarkers that offer the potential to customize future breast cancer therapies. In particular, this triple-biomarker signature will allow the identification of patients in whom the pathway is on and who might benefit the most from vitamin D treatment.

Bottom Line

Researchers have discovered a way in which one of the deadliest and most difficult to treat breast cancers allows tumor cells to grow unchecked and how these tumors resist treatment. Specifically, they found that BRCA1-deficient cells activate CTSL which leads to lower levels of the protein 53BP1 which, in turn, allows cancer cells to grow unchecked.

? In addition, they discovered the potential for a new therapy involving vitamin D, and identified biomarkers that can help identify which patients could benefit from this therapy.

? In the future, women with triple-negative breast cancer may benefit from a treatment that includes vitamin D. As with all laboratory research, vitamin D therapy will have to be studied in a clinical trial before doctors know how safe or effective it will be.

? Researchers' next steps will be to study molecular mechanisms behind the activation of the degradation of 53BP1 by CTSL. In addition, preclinical studies with vitamin D and cathepsin inhibitors as single agents or in combination with different drugs are underway in mouse models of breast cancers.

Hi and welcome to my sunporch!? I'm serving some of those chocolate chip brownies that I shared a couple of weeks ago.? I've got coffee on because Angela is a coffee drinker and I've also got hot chocolate because that's what Holly and I prefer.??:)??You're?in good company today and in you're in for a double treat!? These two ladies have a special place in my heart.? I've always been close to my mom and Joy and I are close as well.? These?two bloggers?are mother and daughter and they share a very sweet close relationship.? I picked up on that right away as I visited both of their blogs.? I know you'll enjoy them!? 1) How long have you been blogging and what/who gave you the desire to blog?

Thanks Tammy for having us over to visit with you on the sun porch. It is such an honor to be here. I started blogging 2 years ago this month. Holly, my daughter, had been blogging for a while and kept on at me to jump in and have my own blog. With her help and guidance, blogging has been a rewarding experience for me.

2) How did you choose the name of your blog and why?

When I began blogging my granddaughter, Darbee Rae, was 3 years old. We would sit on the front porch and swing and peek into the windows of the great room. The same swing where I swung her Mama many years before. Thus the name, ?Thru Nana?s Window? was created.

3) What variety of topics do you post on your blog (examples - home decorating, family, gardening, recipes, adoption, homeschooling, crafting, etc....)

The blog was created for me to share my love of country and prim decorating and to become friends with those with the same interest. As it has progressed, I tend to share a variety of topics. Sometime nothing more than what has gone on in the life of a Mother, Wife, and Nana. My love however will always be my home and decorating.

4) Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

I have been married to my best friend and childhood sweetheart for 39 years. God blessed us with a daughter, Holly, after 9 years of marriage. She was born two months early and weighed in at 3lbs. 7 oz. The day I found out I was pregnant in the doctor?s office, I said a prayer and gave her to God. I fully believe to this day, God heard my prayers and after 1 month in the hospital, we brought home a tiny but healthy 3lb. 15 oz. baby girl. Holly and her husband have blessed us with a wonderful granddaughter, Darbee Rae.

5) How would you describe your decorating style?

I don?t guess there is a name to my style of decorating. I love primitives and have prim accents throughout my home. I have a few antiques and several family pieces that have been handed down that are priceless to me. I would love more antiques. I also love the country farmhouse style. If I see something that speaks to me, I buy it and worry about how to display it later.



6) What's your favorite color and why?

My favorite color is red. It is a bright and happy color to me. I want something red that I can see in every room. Red makes me smile!!

7) Tell us a few of your favorite things (collections, things that make you happy, etc.).

When my feet touch the floor in the morning, I am happy and thankful God has given me another day. I try to start each day as a new beginning with a smile on my face. A favorite day is one that I have spent with my girls and/or friends shopping and junking. I love collecting redware, old boxes, whisk brooms and country/prim coffee mugs. The latter being so hard for me to find.



8) What do you like to do in your spare time (hobbies, crafts, etc..)?

I spend so much time during the week with my girls while Mr. P is working. So, when he is off, I love doing things with him. A day trip out of town junking and ending the day with a quiet supper is so much fun. A night at home snuggling in front of the fireplace and just sharing the day?s events is comforting. He also has a woodshop here at home. Love it when he makes me something and brings it in for me to use in my d?cor. I love making bowl fillers, stitcheries, and am learning punch needle. Here are Darbee Rae and Papa working on a project together.



9) What does your dream house look like? (Describe and/or include photo)

This one might surprise you. Here is a picture of my dream home. It is on the national register of historic homes here in town.

No, you don?t have to go back and make sure I said I love prims and country. Ha! This is totally Victorian. There is a long story behind my love for this house. It might be a good post on my blog one day. Although it is a private residence, at one time it was a bed and breakfast. Mr. P surprised me and took me there for the night for an anniversary getaway. We had the whole house to ourselves. My dream would be to own it, return it to the bed and breakfast and Holly and I run it. There is a cute cottage behind it that Holly and her family could live in. Sounds perfect don?t ya think?


10) If you could visit anywhere, anytime, where would it be and why?

Traveling is definitely an interest of mine. I would love to say I had visited every state in the U.S. I would start on the eastern side and my first choice would be to visit New England in the fall.


11) Would you share with us a favorite homemaking/organizing tip or recipe, etc..?

I love changing and playing house. But?as most, I have to be in the mood. My advice to anyone, make your home comfortable for you and your family. Surround yourselves with things you love. The best compliment I ever received was when a visitor said, ?I could stay here forever. It?s like going to my grandmother?s home years ago.?


12) Tell us something about yourself that we might not already know from reading your blog. (something unusual, etc..)

I have a terrible fear of flying. I have never flown in a plane and have no desire to do so.


13) Tell me a little bit about the special bond you share between you and your daughter, Holly. (You can tell us this from any angle?..special memories, etc?. anyway you want to do this, Angela!)

Holly and I have always had a wonderful relationship. I think her being an only child, growing up and surrounded by adults made her more mature for her age. Our relationship was never one we had to work on. As she grew older, our love and companionship grew closer and closer. We were always honest and open with her and let her see the good and bad in all situations. I thank God daily for the relationship I have with her and she shares with me and her daddy.

14) Tell us a way God has blessed you and/or your family.

God has truly blessed me and my family in more ways than I could express. There have been many rough times during our 39 years of marriage. One time that comes to mind was during the building of our home. Our contractor went bankrupt and left us with nothing. God provided and we struggled, but finished our home with the help of family and friends. I can?t imagine a day in my life without God by my side.

1) How long have you been blogging and what/who gave you the desire to blog?

I have been blogging for 3 years. I started blogging as more of a journal to document my days at home with Darbee. I wanted a way to remember all of the ?little? things we did and all of our fun adventures. I use a site called Blog 2 Print each year and have my blog posts and pictures for the year published into a hard bound book. These are priceless keepsakes to me. They will be something that Darbee Rae will treasure one day.



2) How did you choose the name of your blog and why?

I do not claim to be a crafter. I ?piddle.? I like to try and learn how to do new things. Therefore, I have many hobbies. I also write about my days with Darbee who also likes to ?make things.? I wanted something catchy and cute. Thus the title? ?Holly?s Hobbies and Darbee Days.?



3) What variety of topics do you post on your blog (examples - home decorating, family, gardening, recipes, adoption, homeschooling, crafting, etc....)

My blog is pretty much a hodge podge of everything. I do some posts about my home. Some of my decorating, yummy recipes, and my craft adventures. I also share our adventures and the fun times we share as a family.


4) Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

I am an only child. I have always strived to do good and serve the Lord. I am a quiet person until I get to know you. Then watch out. I will sit and chat for hours! I have always been a people pleaser. I have been married to my hubby, Stacy for 9 years. He is my perfect match. Here is one of hubby hard at work. Notice his little helper in the background. Ha! Our family is small, but we are all close and I cherish that.

5) How would you describe your decorating style?

My decorating style is whatever I like and whatever makes me happy. I have some prim items in my home and some things that I just like. I don?t have one style throughout my entire home.


6) What's your favorite color and why?

I guess it would be black. LOL. Nothing gothic or anything. I just like it. When you wear it, it goes with anything and makes you looks slimmer right? ? My car is black. Black is a good prim color also! I am trying to convince myself to paint my kitchen cabinets black! Hehe. See this hall tree? It has been passed down through our family and I am so proud to have it.

7) Tell us a few of your favorite things (collections, things that make you happy, etc.).

I don?t really collect anything. If I did, it would be old jars. I like old mason jars and neat old bottles. I have a purse/bag fetish and could probably open my own department store with all of my bags. ? I like cute ink pens and funky socks too! This is just a sampling of purses and bags. Trust me?.there is LOTS more!

8) What do you like to do in your spare time (hobbies, crafts, etc..)?

In my spare time, I mainly like to shop! LOL. I am a Pinterest and Facebook addict. I enjoy making stitcheries and have been trying to learn to sew a bit. I am by no means an expert. One of my favorite hobbies is photography. I would dream of one day owning my own photography business. I keep a camera with me wherever I go. Here is a picture of a sunset I took near our home.

9) What does your dream house look like? (Describe and/or include photo)

Oh wow. Let me see. My dream house would be a big white two story house with a wrap around front porch. It would have a full finished basement and my mom and dad would live with us. It would sit on many acres of land and have a huge workshop out back for my dad. I would have a dream craft room too! It would look something like this?



10) If you could visit anywhere, anytime, where would it be and why?

This is hard. I have never been on a plane and have no intentions to, so I don?t know? I would love to visit heaven. I would love to have just a glimpse. Just a peek to be able to answer all of Darbee?s questions about the afterlife. Let me explain?by visiting, I mean like we would go and visit with a friend. The purpose being to answer all of Darbee?s questions. When God sees fit, my goal is not to visit but to live there eternally.


11) Would you share with us a favorite homemaking/organizing tip or recipe, etc..?

Make it yours. Do what you like with what you have. Don?t worry about having a perfectly clean house all the time. Enjoy it. Live in it. Be proud of it. Here is a pic. of our home.

12) Tell us something about yourself that we might not already know from reading your blog. (something unusual, etc..)

My hubby is 20 years older than I am. It?s a funny story how we met. I worked at Chick-fil-A. He came in alone all the time and I felt sorry for him. After getting to know him, I had a bright idea to set him up with a lady from my church. Well?without going into all the details, it backfired and turned out he liked me instead. We dated for 2 years and were married in December of 2003. He had never been married and is a perfect match for me. God knew what he was doing when he put us together.

13) Tell me a little bit about the special bond you share between you and your mother, Angela. (You can tell us this from any angle?..special memories, etc?. anyway you want to do this, Holly.)

My parents and I are extremely close. BUT..besides my hubby, my mom is my best friend. People often laugh at me for the relationship I share with my mom. I am so thankful and proud of it. I can only hope one day Darbee Rae and I are as close as she and I are. She is my shopping partner, crafting buddy, listening ear, advice giver, shoulder to cry on, and so much more. I love her to death.


14) Tell us a way God has blessed you and/or your family.

This is a hard one because God has blessed me and my family beyond measure. I could write forever. One way is with Darbee Rae. Hubby and I had tried for two years to get pregnant. I had just about given up. I had been to fertility doctors and nothing had worked. Finally, I gave up on all the medicines and put it in God?s hands. I knew if he wanted me to have a child, he would give one to me. During that time, my grandmother?s condition got worse and she was no longer able to stay alone. She was put in a nursing home. This was a very difficult time for our family, especially my mom. Right after all of this, Darbee Rae was born. Boy does God like to teach us lessons? I learned that things will happen in HIS time, not mine.

Here is a picture of Darbee Rae with ?Nanny.? Darbee met her when she was 3 days old and didn?t miss many weeks in her life visiting her each week at the nursing home. Nanny was blind and was never able to see Darbee. One of her favorite things was for Darbee to sing Jesus Loves Me to her. Darbee Rae sang it one last time for her at her funeral. How special.

Commercial Real Estate Forecast Conference speakers: Optimistic ...

Walgreens photoExpect a solid year for the Chicago-area retail sector in 2013.

That was the message from some of the biggest names in the area?s retail brokerage industry during the 11th annual Commercial Real Estate Forecast Conference held Jan. 22 in Chicago by Illinois Real Estate Journal, Chicago Industrial Properties and Midwest Real Estate News.

Such retail pros as Andy Hochberg, chief executive officer and managing principal with Next Realty; Marlon Stone, executive vice president with Colliers International; Scott Carr, executive vice president with Inland Real Estate Corporation; and Charles Margosian III, senior vice president with Highland Management Associates, Inc., expressed optimism that retailers in Chicago and its suburbs will see a strong year in 2013.

?I think the optimism that we saw at this conference last year regarding retail was justified,? said Stone. ?The retailers I worked with experienced gains. Chicago is so desirable. Add to that the lack of new construction and the demand for retail has grown.?

?2012 exceeded our expectations,? Carr said. ?What?s appealing to us is that leasing volume has picked up across the spectrum of retailers.?

But there is one type of retailer that is doing especially well today, discounters.

?People are tightening their wallets,? Stone said. ?They are living on less. And until that changes, the discounters will continue to expand.?

The panelists at the conference also agreed that the city and suburbs are now seeing a flight to quality among retailers. Retailers that would formerly set up shop in Class-B centers are now, because of lower rents, moving into A-level retail centers. C-level tenants are moving into B-level centers.

This does, though, leave a challenge: Are C-level retail centers still viable? Are there any tenants in this flight to quality that will choose to do business from a C-level retail strip?

These are questions that highlighted one of the prevalent themes of the conference?s retail-focused breakout session: The retail market in the Chicago area is a vibrant and evolving one. The brokers working it, then, rarely suffer through a dull day.

?The difference between an A- and C-level retail center can be half a block,? said Margosian. ?That?s a big difference between retail and, say, office. Sharp investors can own an A-class property without spending $400 million for an office tower in downtown Chicago.?

Press for Android updated with performance fixes

Android CentralPopular Google Reader app Press has been updated with new performance improvements, as well as various bug fixes. The second update for the app brings it up to version 1.1.1, and since updating we're noticing that the app does seem a good bit nippier -- especially when syncing large numbers of unread articles.

If you'd previously tried out Press but had been put off by issues with speed and responsiveness, now might be the chance to give it another try. You can find the download link above; as always, it costs $1.99 and is limited those running Android 4.0 and above. Existing users can update by heading to the "My Apps" section in the Google Play Store app.

Latinos take on more prominent role in Obama inauguration

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Latinos are taking a more prominent role in President Barack Obama's second inauguration, from the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice swearing in the vice president to a star-studded concert celebrating Latino culture.

Eva Longoria, a co-chairwoman for Obama's campaign, hosted "Latino Inaugural 2013: In Performance at the Kennedy Center" as a salute to the president Sunday evening ahead of his public swearing-in Monday. Jose Feliciano, Chita Rivera, Rita Moreno and Latin pop star Prince Royce all performed. The lineup also included Mario Lopez and Wilmer Valderrama.

Vice President Joe Biden and his family appeared onstage, drawing big cheers, to help open the show. He said he wanted to thank Latinos for their support in last year's election.

Biden said something profound happened with the enormous Latino support for Obama, and he said the Latino community underestimates its power.

"One thing that happened in this election, you spoke. You spoke in a way that the world, and I mean the world, as well as the United States, could not fail to hear," Biden said, calling the Latino vote decisive. "This is your moment. America owes you."

Feliciano opened the show by singing the national anthem.

Marc Anthony later drew big cheers when he applauded Latinos' growing political influence.

"Our united voice got us all here tonight and got the best man for the job in the White House," Anthony said.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who gave the keynote speech at last year's Democratic National Convention, recalled the admiration Latinos held for another president more than 50 years ago. Portraits of President John F. Kennedy still hang in many homes, he said.

"As we said 'Viva Kennedy' 50 years ago, today we say 'Viva Obama,'" Castro said.

A children's choir from San Juan, Puerto Rico, closed out the show, singing "This Land is Your Land." They were joined by a larger Latino choir, including Hispanic members of the U.S. military, in singing "America the Beautiful."

Earlier Sunday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, an Obama appointee who is the first Hispanic justice on the highest court, administered the oath of office to Biden. And Richard Blanco, a son of Cuban exiles, is Obama's inauguration poet.

Latinos have a distinct presence at this inauguration after raising funds and turning out the vote for Obama in the 2012 election. Hispanics voted 7 to 1 for Obama over his challenger, Republican Mitt Romney, whose Hispanic support was less than any other presidential candidate in 16 years. Analysts said Romney's hardline stance on immigration was a factor.

San Antonio philanthropist and business leader Henry Munoz III, who coordinated the Latino inauguration event with Longoria and other Obama supporters, said this is a special moment when the Latino community is positioned to take an expanded role in shaping the country's future.

"Without question, the presidential election of 2012 proves that Latinos are perhaps the most important influence from this point forward in the election of the president of the United States," Munoz said. "It's important that the leadership in Washington view us not as a narrow interest group but as a vibrant political force" that carries not just votes, but influence and financial resources.

Organizers planned a series of symposiums, dinners and events ahead of the inauguration to keep people talking about issues that matter to Latinos, from immigration reform to building a Latino history museum on the National Mall. Munoz led a presidential commission that called on Congress in 2011 to authorize such a museum within the Smithsonian Institution, but Congress has not yet passed such a bill.

Munoz said it's important to keep Latinos engaged through the inauguration and beyond.

"Our work is not done. It doesn't end," he said. "We have a tendency to look at this phenomenon as ending on Election Day, when the reality is now it's time to get to work."

Longoria said this is her first inauguration. She has taken on a new role as political advocate since her days on "Desperate Housewives," pushing for a Latino history museum in Washington and raising funds for Obama's re-election.

Even though this is Obama's second inauguration, Longoria said there is still much to celebrate, including Sotomayor's role swearing in the vice president.

"There's something special about seeing a president recommit himself to the people of this great nation," she said before the show.

Longoria said she hopes to help influence policies, including immigration reform, and hopes Obama will make that his top priority as an economic issue. She called the Latino fundraising effort for the president a historic turning point.

"I think we have a permanent seat at the table, and now we're going to be able to have influence on what affects our communities," Longoria said. "I take civic responsibility very seriously, and I want to do what I can to help my country."

US official: 2 more Americans die in Algeria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two additional Americans were killed in last week's hostage standoff at a natural gas complex in Algeria, bringing the final U.S. death toll to three, an Obama administration official said Monday.

Seven Americans made it out safely.

The deceased Americans were identified as Victor Lynn Lovelady and Gordon Lee Rowan, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter. The official had no details on how the Americans died, and their hometowns were not released. The FBI has recovered the bodies of and notified the families.

Militants who attacked the Ain Amenas gas field in the Sahara had offered to release the pair in exchange for the freedom of two prominent terror suspects jailed in the United States: Omar Abdel Rahman, a blind sheik convicted of plotting to blow up New York City landmarks and considered the spiritual leader of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani scientist convicted of shooting at two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

The Obama administration rejected the offer outright.

Last week's desert siege began Wednesday when Mali-based, al-Qaida-linked militants attempted to hijack two buses at the plant, were repelled, and then seized the gas refinery. They said the attack was retaliation for France's recent military intervention against Islamist rebels in neighboring Mali, but security experts argue it must have taken weeks of planning to hit the remote site.

One American death was confirmed Friday, that of Texas resident Frederick Buttaccio. And five Americans had been taken out of the country before Saturday's final assault by Algerian forces against the militants.

The U.S. official said two further Americans survived the four-day crisis at an insecure oil rig at the facility. They were flown out to London on Saturday.

The overall death toll from the standoff has surpassed 80.

Algeria said after Saturday's assault by government forces that at least 32 extremists and 23 hostages of all nationalities were killed. On Sunday, the Algerian bomb squads found 25 more bodies, according to a security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. And a wounded Romanian who had been evacuated later died.

France defends Algeria over hostage crisis response

PARIS (Reuters) - France's foreign minister on Sunday defended Algeria's handling of a hostage crisis at a desert gas plant, saying the death toll in an assault on the hostage-takers was "very high" but authorities had faced an "intolerable situation".

Islamist militants seized the remote compound in the Sahara desert before dawn on Wednesday, taking a large number of hostages. Details are still emerging of what happened when the Algerian army launched a final assault to end the siege on Saturday.

"What everyone needs to know is that these terrorists who attacked this gas plant are killers who pillage, rape, plunder and kill. The situation was unbearable," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said.

"It's easy to say that this or that should have been done. The Algerian authorities took a decision and the toll is very high but I am a bit bothered ... when the impression is given that the Algerians are open to question. They had to deal with terrorists," he told Europe 1 radio in an interview.

Algeria's government said on Sunday the death toll from the gas plant attacked in the Sahara desert would rise from the initial estimate of 23.

A new view of a 20,000-year old supernova remnant demonstrates the upgraded imaging power of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and provides more clues to the history of this giant cloud that resembles a beloved endangered species, the Florida Manatee.

W50 is one of the largest supernova remnants ever viewed by the VLA. At nearly 700 light years across, it covers two degrees on the sky that's the span of four full Moons!

Turbulent History

The enormous W50 cloud formed when a giant star, 18,000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila, exploded as a supernova around twenty thousand years ago, sending its outer gases flying outward in an expanding bubble.

The remaining, gravitationally-crushed relic of that giant star, most likely a black hole, feeds on gas from a very close, companion star. The cannibalized gas collects in a disk around the black hole. The disk and black hole's network of powerful magnetic field lines acts like an enormous railroad system to snag charged particles out of the disk and channel them outward in powerful jets traveling at nearly the speed of light. This system of a black hole and its feeder star shines brightly in both radio waves and X-rays and is known collectively as the SS433 microquasar.

Over time, the microquasar's jets have forced their way through the expanding gases of the W50 bubble, eventually punching bulges outward on either side. The jets also wobble, like an unstable spinning top, and blaze vivid corkscrew patterns across the inflating bulges.

New Namesake

Optically bright astronomical objects, those visible to the eye and optical telescopes, often are nicknamed for their earthly likenesses, such as the Whirlpool Galaxy and Owl Nebula. Invisible W50 comes by its less catchy name by being the 50th radio source listed in the Westerhout Catalog, assembled in 1958 by Dutch astronomer, Gart Westerhout.

When the VLA's giant W50 image reached the NRAO Director's office, Heidi Winter, the Director's Executive Assistant, saw the likeness to a manatee, the endangered marine mammals known as "sea cows" that congregate in warm waters in the southeastern United States.

Florida Manatees are gentle giants that average around 10 feet long, weigh over 1000 pounds, and spend up to eight hours a day grazing on sea plants. They occupy the remainder of their day resting, often on their backs with their flippers crossed over their large bellies, in a pose closely resembling W50.

Dangerous encounters with boat propellers injure many of these curious herbivores, giving them deep, curved scars similar in appearance to the arcs made by the powerful jets on the large W50 remnant.

Thanks to Ms. Winter's suggestion, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory has adopted a new nickname for W50: The Manatee Nebula. In collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the NRAO will unveil the Manatee Nebula to the public during the annual Manatee Festival in Crystal River, Florida on a stage overlooking the largest natural concentration of wintering manatees in the world.

Police: NM teen charged in deaths of 2 adults, 3 children

A 15-year-old boy has been charged in the shooting deaths of two adults and three children in southwest Albuquerque, N.M., local police say, according to local news media.

The unidentified male juvenile was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death, KOB-TV 4 reported.

Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies responded to a private residence in the city's South Valley area around 9:15 p.m. Saturday. The bodies of a man, a woman, two girls and a boy were discovered in the home, each riddled with multiple gunshot wounds, reports said.

Police found several weapons at the scene of the crime,?including a semi-automatic military-style rifle, according to KOB-TV.?

The investigation is ongoing. The identities of the teenage suspect and five victims have not yet been released.

(AP) ? In this more than 4,500-year-old pharaonic necropolis, Egypt's modern rituals of the dead are starting to encroach on its ancient ones. Steamrollers flatten the desert sand, and trucks haul in bricks as villagers build rows of tombs in a new cemetery nearly up to the feet of Egypt's first pyramids and one of its oldest temples.

The illegal expansion of a local cemetery has alarmed antiquities experts, who warn the construction endangers the ancient, largely unexplored complex of Dahshour, where pharaoh Sneferu experimented with the first true, smooth-sided pyramids that his son Khufu ? better known as Cheops ? later took to new heights at the more famous Giza Plateau nearby.

The encroachment also reflects the turmoil of today's Egypt, two years after the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Police, still in disarray since the revolution, do nothing to enforce regulations. Fired up by the sense of rebellion against authority, Egyptians feel little fear of taking what they want , sometimes to redress neglect or corruption by authorities, sometimes just for personal gain. Also, as the new Islamist rulers and their opponents struggle over the country's identity, experts fear Egypt's ancient monuments, which hard-liners see as pagan, could pay the price in neglect.

In the case of Dahshour, villagers say their cemeteries are full and authorities don't give permits or land for new ones. So they took matters into their own hands and grabbed what they insist is empty desert to erect family tombs.

"The dearest thing for us is burying our dead," said Mohammed Abdel-Qader, a resident of nearby Manshiet Dahshour. "This land here is wide and flat, it's a valley. Where are the antiquities they talk about? ... We have no antiquities here."

The problem is not just at Dahshour. An explosion of illegal building the past two years is endangering Egypt's ancient treasures around the country, authorities say. Locals living next to some of most beloved pharaonic sites ? including the famed Giza Pyramids outside Cairo ? are seizing land, building homes, laying farmland or selling off parcels, said Mohammed Younes, head of antiquities for Dahshour.

At the same time, looting has become more brazen in many places. Just a few weeks ago, several guards at Dahshour were shot and wounded when they confronted thieves doing an illegal dig during the night, he said.

The cemetery expansion is the most dangerous encroachment yet because of how close it comes to the Dahshour monuments, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage site list, Younes said. Moreover, Dahshour is largely unexcavated, since the area was a closed military zone until 1996. What remains buried is believed to be a treasure trove shedding light on the largely unknown early dynasties.

"When you build something over archaeological site, you change everything. We can't dig in and know what is inside," Younes told The Associated Press. "This is the only virgin site in all of Egypt."

The area is part of the vast Memphis necropolis where pharaohs built their monumental funeral complexes stretching south from Giza in the desert along the Nile Valley.

The construction started suddenly about two weeks ago, apparently when one villager added a new tomb in the desert on the edge of an existing cemetery, guards and residents said. Word went out and hundreds of residents from at least four neighboring villages descended on the site to build tombs of their own, up a small desert valley.

Police did nothing to stop them ? nor did the military, still stationed nearby.

Adjacent to the construction is the crumbled 3,800-year-old Black Pyramid of Amenemhat III, an area that has faced heavy looting over the past two years. Just beyond towers Sneferu's Bent Pyramid, dating some 700 years earlier, with its distinctive bent sides believed to have been caused when the builders had to correct a too-steep angle of ascent half-way through construction. Farther away is the Red Pyramid, in which Sneferu's builders got the job right, producing the first smooth-sided pyramid, evolving from the stepped structures built by earlier dynasties.

The state minister of antiquities Mohammed Ibrahim said in a statement Monday that an order had been issued to remove the construction and the Interior Ministry, in charge of police, had been asked to carry it out. "The financial resources of the ministry are not enough" to protect the sites, it said.

The question is whether it will be implemented. Younes said the military would have to get involved since police have refused to act. He said past requests for orders to remove illegal construction at archaeological sites had been ignored. "There is no deterrent," he said.

He also worries that the rise of Islamists to power brings a dismissive attitude to pre-Islamic antiquities.

He pointed out that pharaonic treasures ? a key part of the country's identity ? are mentioned in the Islamist-drafted constitution only as "an afterthought," just in terms of maintaining sites. In fact, the constitution doesn't refer directly to pharaonic sites or Egypt's ancient civilization at all, making only a vague reference to "heritage."

Some at the construction site said they were sure Islamist President Mohammed Morsi won't order the removal of the modern cemetery because he was a believer and respects Islam's ways.

Authorities may be wary of forcibly removing the construction and risking a clash with the villagers, who say they won't go unless they are given a new site nearby and compensation for what they have already built.

Ehab Eddin el-Haddad, one resident building a burial plot, said removing the tombs would require "killing these people, and it would mean a return to the old regime ... it would be the return of repression." Nearby, workers slapped together bricks for a new wall and a heavy machine flattened the earth for construction.

The villagers come from a string of nearby farming communities crammed amid the palm groves in the narrow, verdant strip of the Nile Valley, where land is limited as Egypt's population of 85 million swells. Residents said they were desperate for new space for burial plots, pointing to old family tombs they said were full. Authorities balked at issuing permits for new tombs or demanded exorbitant fees and bribes, several residents said.

"What can people do with their dead? They can't throw them in the canal," said Ali Orabi, a local farmer. "There is death and there is birth, these things don't stop ... You dignify the dead by burying them."

El-Haddad said nearby land had been set aside to expand the cemetery but after the revolution it was seized by armed local "thugs" who started building houses on it and selling off plots, a common problem with Egypt's new lawlessness.

Like many others, he resented the authorities' concern over antiquities and tourism that the villagers say benefit only rich Egyptians, corrupt officials and foreign archaeologists, with no gains for the poor.

"Where is the gold that came out of this land? All smuggled out," said el-Haddad. "I'm not waiting for some half-naked foreigner to come take out what she finds in the cemeteries. What do I get out of it? ... I want a place to be buried in."

Antiquities theft is believed to be big business in Egypt, fueled by post-revolution chaos, and press reports often accuse local officials of involvement, though few cases have gone to court.

The fear is that looters could also use the construction as cover, even if the villagers are acting out of a legitimate need for land, said Monica Hanna, an independent archaeologist who has worked at Dahshour. Hills nearby are dotted by pits from digs by thieves searching for treasure, mostly from last year.

In the area in general, "there has been more looting than scientific excavation," Hanna said.

Saleh Mohammed Shafei, a 77-year-old villager, acknowledged that "there are people who come and dig at night" ? but said those like him who are building tombs had nothing to do with the thieves.

"Where else would people go" with their dead, he said. "These people are building because they're forced to. These old tombs are filled, some three layers deep."
