Whole Foods, Newport Beach ? Oasis for Foodies, Hipsters and ...

Last week I had the opportunity to do a preview of the new Whole Foods grocery store in Newport Beach. My initial impression is that this place was made for foodies! Located at 415 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach California, this store is proof that the ?Foodie? culture is well ingrained in Orange County California. This multi-million dollar store is an amusement park for anyone who loves food. My only fear with this store is that if I go in for a bag of apples, I may not?come out for a couple hours!

What makes Whole Foods a serious foodie destination versus just another ?foofoo yuppie? grocery store? This store is a serious homage to all the latest food trends, and it embraces the local and organic movement. Just like the rest of the Whole Foods chain stores, you will find a very serious?selection of organic and locally grown produce, hand crafted foods, and high-end center store items. The key differences at this store reside in the perimeter of the store, mainly their Beehive Tea Market, Coffee Station, Back Bay Tavern and their fresh craft food stations.

?If you are looking for something a little more ?adult,? the beehive also offers some alcohol-infused tea drinks and several draft craft beers. Attached to the beehive is their outdoor patio, complete with?over sized?patio chairs, sofas and a fire pit. The manager confirmed that you are allowed to purchase alcohol in the store and drink it on their patio. Here is what I imagined: ordering some refreshing tea drinks, picking up a bottle of wine, chocolate and cheese from the store, and enjoying a picnic on their spacious patio.?

Back Bay Brewery

Probably the crown jewel of the Whole Foods store ? what other grocery store has a gastropub? This restaurant has a rich focus on food, micro-craft beer and wine, as well as a stylized subtle throwback to prohibition era Harlem. The look of prohibition era Harlem isn?t obvious, but more subtle with exposed brickwork, slightly industrial pendulum lights that are dressed with yellow glass, and the center piece: a solid mahogany bar taken from an old-school pub in Harlem that dates back to the 1920?s. The details are pretty complete, with hex tiles and clear stained wood furniture that allows the natural grain in the wood to add to the ambiance of the gastropub. This was one of the best decoration jobs I have seen in a while.

The food was more impressive. The dishes were simple comfort foods with a naughty edge, just like a Kansas girl going to Vegas for a bachelorette party. The menu featured about 15 main course items, five appetizers and five salads. I was able to try most of them, here are my assessments:

?

?

?The Veggie Plate? ? ?Innocent Vegetables lightly covered in Tempura ?and fried. This dish was light enough to make you still feel sexy on a date.

Wings ? Wings made from local and organic chickens. You can taste the difference in the flavor of the meat. The Wings came in your choice of Buffalo, Inferno or Ginger Soy.

Chicken Club ? Grilled Pittman Farms chicken breast and house smoked bacon with lettuce and tomato on a chibata roll. I usually do not select sandwiches because I think they will be dry, but this one is worth trying.

Tofu Sticks ? A really good interpretation of tofu suitable for folks who don?t think they like tofu. I am no granola, but I liked this dish. The tofu had a lot of flavor. They use wing sauces (buffalo, inferno, ginger soy) to give this locally produced tofu a nice flavor.

Mediterranean Cal Organic Chopped Kale Salad ? The way kale should be made. This version of Kale can make even the most fussy of 8 year olds like healthy, flaky greens. Tell you what ? bring in your 4th grader and don?t tell them what they are eating and have them try this, they just might turn into a future foodie.

SoPac Caesar -Rough cuts of romaine stacked with parmesan and Caesar dressing and croutons.

Fish and Chips ? Batter made with local beer . ?Although these were not the ?best fish and chips I have tasted, they were good.

Wasabi Pepper Seared Scallops - One of the best dishes on the menu, and despite the name, the dish was not spicy. Fresh scallops are seared and topped with micro greens. They are served with a forest of mushrooms and asparagus saut?. Great flavor combination from the sweet protein of scallop with the very subtle wasabi pepper.

Gingered Atlantic Salmon ? One of the few exceptions on the menu where I thought the food was a little boring. Although the fish itself had great natural flavors, I felt that it needed a lot more seasoning or a marinade. The salmon is pan-seared to retain its natural juices and served with radish salmon roe. On the side is an organic salad that is dressed with Peruvian corn vinaigrette.

Panko Crusted Eggplant Parmesan Fondue ? This dish was one my favorites. Chunks of eggplant are tossed in white truffle and panko and crisply fried. The fried eggplants are topped with a dollop of ?cashew parmesan?fondue.?

Cabernet Braised Short Ribs ? Short Ribs braised in Cabernet Sauvignon The Short ribs are ?served with root vegetables, corn cake, tomato confit and a Pobalano Sauce. I?didn?t?try this dish personally, but Mike from www.eatingmywaythroughoc.com loved this dish.

Tavern Burger- I was not expecting much from the burger, although I was very pleasantly surprised by the flavor and juiciness of the beef. The bun and toppings were pretty impressive, even better since it was topped with bacon jam.

?

In addition to the food, they featured a very impressive selection of draft micro-craft brews, many from local breweries. Some of the better beers that I noticed included Allagash Brewing (Portland), Ballast Point (San Diego), The Bruery (Orange County), and Bootleggers (Orange County). The wine list was also pretty impressive, and featured a variety of price points. Some wines that stood out included a buttery Chardonnay by Rombauer and Hitching Post Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara.

My Final Thoughts

This was a very impressive new Whole Foods in Newport Beach that was able to impress quite a few foodies who attended their media sneak-peek preview. I was very impressed by Whole Foods? strong commitment to its Global Animal Partnership, locally produced food, organic materials, and sustainability. These practices are engrained in the set up and practices of the store, making it easy for customers to be a part of these practices. Whole Foods did an amazing job with this store and made it a foodie destination with shopping, a restaurant and bar. I know I will be back, you just might see me on the patio with a bottle of wine and stinky cheese!

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, holds celebratory yard sale with $0.25 games

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, offers select 25-cent titles this week

Google Play crossed a rather significant milestone this morning: something to the tune of 25 billion app downloads. While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own -- especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren't included in this tally -- Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you'll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.

With today's announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play -- a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

Six reasons this year's U.N. General Assembly is must-see TV

Think the annual September gathering of world leaders at the United Nations is a big snooze? Think again. In the past, it has produced memorable, even explosive, moments: President George W. Bush telling the global assembly in 2002 it risked ?irrelevance? if it didn't join him in confronting Iraq?s Saddam Hussein, or Venezuela?s Hugo Ch?vez, in 2006, likening the same Mr. Bush to the devil, or Libya's late Muammar Qaddafi demanding the UN move to Tripoli so he would not have to cross multiple time zones to attend meetings.

This year, the General Assembly debate convenes early Sept. 25 in a particularly somber mood. The Security Council is stuck in big power paralysis over the Syrian crisis to a degree unseen since the end of the cold war. Here are six key moments to watch for this time, led by a matchup of two presidential candidates from a major Security Council power. Guess which one?

1. Dueling Obama and Romney speeches

OK, so Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won?t have his moment at the UN podium ? at least not this year. But at just about the same time President Obama is addressing the General Assembly Tuesday morning, Mr. Romney will be speaking across Manhattan at the Clinton Global Initiative, former President Bill Clinton?s international development forum.

Mr. Obama?s star status at the UN was tarnished last year when, working through the Security Council, he opposed the Palestinians? bid for recognition. This year, expect Obama to laud Myanmar?s emergence from authoritarian rule and to recognize the ?work in progress? that are the countries of the Arab awakening. He?s likely to remind Syria?s embattled regime that its time is past, but a cautious president wanting no international surprises before November won?t be calling for international intervention in Syria?s civil war. Obama is also likely to remind the world that the window for resolving Iran?s nuclear challenge peacefully is closing.

A question buzzing around diplomatic circles: Will Obama offer a second take of his 2009 Cairo speech and address the frustrations ? showcased in recent anti-American violence ? that threaten to split Muslim countries from the 21st-century world?

2. Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi in the spotlight

Mr. Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated candidate who won Egypt?s first democratic election in June, could provide early clues about how the Islamist leaders who emerged from the Arab Spring intend to interact with the broader world. Morsi was slow to respond to the recent violence that started in Egypt over an American-made video that denigrates the prophet Mohammed. Will Morsi condemn the anti-American and anti-Western violence? And will he pursue the blistering condemnation of Syria?s Bashar al-Assad that he unveiled on a recent visit to Tehran ? and will he thus lay bare the deepening divide between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in the Middle East?

Something else to watch for: what Morsi says about 9/11. The Islamist leader has voiced doubts in the past about Al Qaeda?s role, so some analysts say his visit to New York, the site of the deadliest of the attacks, is a perfect opportunity for him to erase any doubts about his views of that tragic day.

3. A muzzled Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran?

In the past, President Ahmadinejad has seemed to relish his ability to send many delegations fleeing the General Assembly?s green auditorium with his inflammatory statements ? usually directed against Israel, but also targeting the US and the big-power-led Security Council. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatening a military strike against Iran?s nuclear facilities, Mr. Ahmadinejad may opt to throw a few verbal bombs of his own. But some Iran experts, noting that Ahmadinejad is embroiled in a power struggle at home with supreme leader Ali Khamenei, wonder if he might tone down his rhetoric this year.

With Iran?s economy in free fall as a result of UN-approved international sanctions and with the Iranian leadership declaring (and participating in) the Syrian civil war as a battle between regional and international ?domineering powers,? don?t bet on it.

4. Myanmar's return to grace

Myanmar?s president, Thein Sein, will attend the General Assembly, marking the emergence of this Southeast Asian country (formerly known as Burma) from diplomatic isolation amid a significant but incomplete political reformation. Also in New York will be longtime dissident and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, whose stops in Washington included a White House visit with another Nobel laureate, Barack Obama. Ms. Suu Kyi may be the belle of the UN ball, but as an elected member of Myanmar's parliament she may want to avoid showing up President Sein.

5. The Obama-Netanyahu nonmeeting

Obama speaks at the UN Tuesday morning, will address the Clinton Global initiative in the afternoon, and then return to Washington and the campaign. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not arrive in New York until Thursday because of the Yom Kippur holiday. That explains why the two leaders won?t meet in New York, according to the White House.

The real reason seems to lie elsewhere: Mr. Netanyahu had circulated his intention to press Obama to commit to setting ?red lines? for Iran?s nuclear program that, once crossed by Tehran, would trigger US military action. But Obama, who wants to give diplomacy more time and who believes that setting automatic triggers on Iran at this point would be counterproductive, wanted to avoid being painted into a corner by the Israeli leader. Netanyahu is expected to meet with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton instead, so watch for signs of any tension.

6. Palestinian statehood redux

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last year attempted an end run around the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process by using the UN gathering to submit a formal petition for statehood to the Security Council. The move went nowhere, but not before infuriating the US (see ?painting into a corner? in previous item) for forcing Obama to take the UN stage to side with Israel and publicly state US opposition to something he had supported: Palestinian statehood.

This year the Palestinians are lowering their sights. They are expected to announce their intention to win UN ?observer state? status through the General Assembly by the end of the year.

Observer status ? it?s what the Vatican has at the UN ? does not confer voting rights, but it would endow the Palestinians with enhanced legal rights, such as the ability to pursue Israel in international courts. The US and Israel oppose the ?observer state? initiative, saying it would doom the peace process. But winning it requires only a majority vote from the 193-member General Assembly, which is largely pro-Palestinian. With some Palestinian leaders proclaiming that ?observer state? status would recognize Palestine as a ?country under occupation,? the words Mr. Abbas chooses to explain the initiative could turn out to be the assembly?s most explosive.

Same As It Ever Was? A Review of David Byrne, How Music Works ...

Posted by: Keith Meatto on: September 24, 2012

David Byrne, How Music Works

David Byrne?s new manifesto slash memoir, How Music Works, has been written many times before. Ethnomusicologists and philosophers, from Theodor Adorno to Walter Benjamin to David Suisman, have chronicled the historical shift from classical to popular music, lamenting it, praising it, and/or evaluating the societal changes brought about by it and its corresponding technology. Byrne?s book, which illustrates the history of analog and digital recording, narrates the advent of the music industry, and claims to describe how to create a music scene or subculture offers almost nothing new. One could learn a similar amount about modern musical historical shifts through a single listen of LCD Soundsystem?s ?Losing My Edge.? So what gives David Byrne the right to write?

For starters, there?s his legacy as the leader of Talking Heads, a band that actively spearheaded new musical trends, fusing genres and synthesizing the past and the present. While Byrne, who turned 60 this spring, is now decades removed from his Heads days, How Music Works taps into how older musical figures can remain culturally relevant instead of retreating to writing the ?aging rocker biography.? Through attending and analyzing Tune-Yards shows, collaborating with Dirty Projectors on Dark Was The Night, a charity compilation showcasing the who?s who of indie rock circa 2009, and, most recently, releasing the collaborative album Love This Giant with singer/songwriter Annie Clark a.k.a. St. Vincent, Byrne has stayed in the public eye.

Yet, although Byrne stays visible through collaborations, whether the music produced through these collaborations offers anything new is a different story. Byrne, in reference to the popularization of sampling in Remain in Light and Bush of Ghosts, spends a lot of time in How Music Works writing about contemporary sampling and the phenomenon of song lyrics as cultural reference points creeping into everyday dialogue (i.e. Beyonce?s ?put a ring on it?). He connects this trend to live acts that are more visual icons than live performers, like Lady Gaga. Yet, is Byrne a victim of his own accusation? In the book, he chides Pitchfork for saying that he would collaborate with anyone for a bag of Doritos, claiming to be extremely picky about with whom he works. Byrne?s claim is believable, but the extent to which he is the same musical game changer he was years ago is questionable at best. In other words, Byrne seems to be simply exhibiting the visual image of ?hip? or ?indie.?

How Music Works functions best as a ?Where do we go from here?? piece. In the final chapter of the book, Byrne asserts that future generations will look at today?s governments slashing arts budgets in bewilderment. The current movement to bridge the gap between arts and sciences is based on studies that suggest that arts education fosters creativity and improves observational skills across all fields. Byrne implicitly suggests that innovative popular music could improve the world in the same way Adorno described how challenging classical music fostered self-improvement. Perhaps now more than ever the music world needs Byrne to return to innovation. Society could look to a technologically and musically ahead-of-the-game figure like Byrne for guidance, so future generations do not look back on today and say ?same as it ever was.?

Well being a legally bound citizen is slavery.

Those that choose to wage war should be the first to sacrifice. That's all I'm saying.

I agree with the sentiment of your statement.

But I in no way will ever support a draft - slavery - even if it had good consequences (which I don't believe it will). I imagine plenty of Congressman's sons would end up like George W. Bush, flying in the national guard...

A more serious question to ask yourself is why do so many people willingly kill for these aggressive wars?

Some responsibility lies on their shoulders.

PST: Wondolowski MLS's best scorer in decade

San Jose sharpshooter Chris Wondolowski is now, officially, the sharp-shootin?est shooter in MLS in a decade.

Goal No. 22 on the year for Wondolowski found its way past Seattle on Saturday night, which gives him the best season of goals since New England?s Taylor Twellman hit 23 in 2002.

Next time Wondolowski scores he will join Twellman and Raul Diaz Arce in a tie for the fifth-best all-time season of MLS goals.

With four matches remaining after this one, it would not be an awful bet that ?Wondo? will get there, and that he might even move past those two into Top 3 or 4 territory.

The Quakes? remaining schedule after Saturday?s contest:

Consulting Firm Takes On GOP Look at Top

Just as many firms are professing their Democratic bona fides in the wake of the Democratic takeover of Congress, Clark & Weinstock is unabashedly pushing Republican Vin Weber forward.

Davis Weinstock, a Democrat, is stepping away from his managing partner duties, although he will continue to be chairman of the consulting firm. Weber, a former House member from Minnesota, moves up to chief executive Jan. 1.

Weber opened the D.C. office of the New York firm in 1994, and when the Republicans took the Hill, the lobby shop grew to a total of 35 people. For a while, there was another big Democratic name, former House member Vic Fazio of California, but he has moved on, and there has been a decidedly Republican cast to the firm.

He concedes to be looking to hire some Democratic congressional staffers, but Weber said that he not too concerned about being left out in the new world order on the Hill.

"When I started the firm, we had Democrats in charge of everything, and then it was still the Clinton administration" when the Republicans took Congress," Weber said. "You make adjustments. I'm not too concerned."

As a good Republican, Weber said that he regrets his party's losses in the midterm elections but adds: "I just think change is good for our business. When there's big change in Washington, all sorts of people need help from people with experience in Washington."

Also at the lobby shop: Edward Kutler, a senior adviser to then-House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), moves up to be president and chief operating officer; and Sandra Kaplan Stuart, a Defense Department official in the Clinton administration, becomes chief marketing officer.

Clark & Weinstock, a part of the Omnicom Group, has a client roster that has included Pfizer, Freddie Mac and Microsoft.

Democrat-Heavy

Democratic lobbyist John D. Raffaelli is leaving the Washington Group, a lobby shop he founded and sold to Ketchum (also part of the Omnicom empire) several years ago. He is starting Capitol Counsel, which opens Jan. 1.

Capitol Counsel will be moving into offices and partnering with the American Continental Group, a shop with a GOP reputation.

Also joining Raffaelli: Denise Henry and her health-care practice that includes Sara Franko, a former Democratic congressional staffer, and Dan Papadopolis, who worked for then-Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.); Shannon Finley, political director for Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.); James C. Gould, a tax lawyer who was chief counsel to the Senate Finance Committee under then-Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Tex.); and David W. Jones, who most recently consulted for the campaign of incoming House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Baucus. Henry starts out as the firm's only Republican.

Raffaelli is connecting with his earlier partner, Peter Kelly, a former chairman of the California Democratic Party, and Mike Roos, a former California Democratic legislator. Another former partner in the original McAuliffe, Kelly & Raffaelli firm is Terry McAuliffe, former Democratic party chairman.

Raffaelli, a former Bentsen aide, said that the time seemed right for him to shed administrative burdens and focus on lobbying.

"I love lobbying. I love being part of the legislative process," he said.

The Washington Group is headed by former GOP House member Susan Molinari (N.Y.).

Hill Traffic

During the current transition between Republican and Democratic control of Congress, it might be wise not to get in the way of the traffic between the Hill and K Street. Among those making the move:

Mark Kadesh, chief of staff for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), is leaving the Hill after 16 years to join Bartlett & Bendall today. The firm is changing its name to Bartlett, Bendall & Kadesh.

The other names on the door are Doyle Bartlett, earlier chief of staff for Rep. Bill McCollum (R-Fla.), and Jennifer Bendall, former lobbyist for Vivendi and the Recording Industry Association of America and policy adviser to Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.).

Also leaving the Hill is Elliot S. Berke, most recently counsel to House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), who has signed up with GOP lobby shop Barbour Griffith & Rogers as general counsel. He will focus on advising clients and the firm on such issues as foreign agent registration, lobbying disclosure and campaign finance issues.

Andrew Halatei and Ashlie T. Van Meter stepped off Capitol Hill to join the Stanton Park lobby shop. Halatei worked for Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), and Van Meter worked for Rep. Melissa Hart (R-Pa.). Also, Brian Cavey, earlier with Washington Group International and Baucus, has joined Stanton Park.

That's Saying a Lot

Thank goodness they have finally officially merged and changed their name.

Two national associations of state and local air pollution control agencies have worked together for many years and have gone by their joint name of the State and Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators/Association of Local Air Pollution Control Officials -- or STAPPA/ALAPCO for short.

The new name: the National Association of Clean Air Agencies. The longtime executive director of the two original groups and now the merged organization is S. William Becker.

NACAA might not be elegant, but it's a whole lot easier to say. Becker notes that people now ask "if I can get them Final Four tickets."

Crew's?Urso?died of genetic heart defect

Associated Press Sports

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio coroner says Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso died of a genetic defect of the heart and the death was considered natural.

The 22-year-old Urso was pronounced dead in August at Grant Medical Center after collapsing at a downtown Columbus bar and restaurant.

Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak said Friday that Urso died of arrhythmogenic (ah-RITH'-muh-jen-ihk) right ventricular cardiomyopathy (kar-dee-oh-meye-AH'-pa-thee).

Urso played in six games with the Crew and was rehabbing from a sports-groin injury sustained in May.

Crew President and General Manager Mark McCullers says the news helps bring closure to the sudden and tragic loss of Urso.

Panetta: US surge troops out of Afghanistan

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) ? The 33,000 additional U.S. troops that President Barack Obama ordered to Afghanistan to tamp down the Taliban attacks nearly two years ago have now left the country, but a new wave of deadly insider attacks and a reassessment of how NATO troops partner with Afghans have raised questions about how well the military strategy is working.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced on Friday the troops had come out, declaring the surge had accomplished its mission.

But after a tumultuous week in Afghanistan that saw commanders put limits on when NATO and Afghan troops can patrol together, Panetta also acknowledged there will still be difficult days ahead.

"The surge did accomplish it objectives of reversing the Taliban momentum on the battlefield and dramatically increasing the size and capability of the Afghan national security forces," Panetta told reporters at a press conference at the Government House here where he was meeting with New Zealand leaders.

He said the re-deployment of the 33,000 troops was a "very important milestone" and that the U.S. is on track to accomplish its goals in Afghanistan. The withdrawal, which was completed on schedule, still leaves close to 100,000 NATO troops there, including 68,000 Americans.

Panetta's success mantra, however, is called into question by the decision earlier this week that, at least temporarily, NATO operations with small-sized Afghan units are no longer routine, and will require the approval of the regional commander.

Until now, coalition troops routinely conducted operations such as patrolling or manning outposts with small units of their Afghan counterparts. But a growing wave of in so-called insider attacks in which Afghan Army and police troops, or insurgents dressed in their uniforms, have been turning their guns on U.S. and NATO forces, has shaken the trust between the allied troops and the Afghans they are there to train.

And it's called into question the core strategy that relies on NATO troops working shoulder to shoulder with Afghans, training them to take over the security of their own country so the U.S. and its allies can leave at the end of 2014 as planned.

As of this week 51 coalition troops have been killed in such attacks this year.

Australian Brig. Gen. Roger Noble, deputy to the alliance's operations chief, acknowledged earlier this week that the attacks are rattling the troops.

"It strikes right at the heart of our resolve," he said. "It's one thing to be killed in action by the insurgents. It's quite another to be shot in the back of the head at night by your friends."

Panetta, however, has rejected suggestions that the strategy is failing, and on Friday he said "we have turned the corner," in Afghanistan and have successfully been able to build up the Afghan security forces so they can take the lead in security for large sections of the country.

Panetta said the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, "is saying that the force he has put in place is sufficient to accomplish that mission."

The number of U.S. forces there peaked at about 101,000 last year, and they have been coming out slowly over the past several months.

The surge was aimed at beating back the Taliban to give the Afghan government and its security forces the time and space to take hold. The key goal was to ensure the Taliban did not regain a foothold in the country that could allow it once again to become a safe haven for terror groups. And there was hope that Taliban leaders would be willing to come to the peace table.

Military commanders say they have made broad gains against the Taliban, wresting control of areas where the insurgents once had strong footholds. And Panetta has characterized the insider attacks as the last gasp of a desperate insurgency.

But other top military leaders, including U.S. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are worried about the impact of the attacks on the troops. Dempsey called them a "very serious threat" to the war campaign and has declared that "something has to change."

Consider Your Future: Advice on Pension Release | Thordis ...

A pension is commonly released when the holder turns 65. However, some instances allow for a pension release. But since this is not standard procedure, successfully negotiating for an early release may not be that simple.

A pension release is a withdrawal of funds from a retirement account before the actual retirement happens. In the UK, you are allowed to withdraw up to twenty-five percent of your fund without acquiring a penalty only if you reach a specific age. There are a number of restrictions and qualifications for people who want a pension release.

As much as possible, you should avoid touching your retirement fund before the due time. These are investments that benefit you in the long run if you allow it to grow and mature. When you are granted an early release of your retirement funds, you can expect the quality of your life after retirement to be lower than expected.

A reason why early withdrawal is not advisable is largely due to taxation issues. You should be aware of penalties that people acquire when they withdraw from a pension fund. There also remains the fact that pension release is not a very good decision for the majority of the population.

However, the decision for pension release could also hold a few key advantages. Some people are faced with difficult situations and a pension fund withdrawal could be their only choice. In many instances, advice on pension release will depend on how willing the consumer is to sacrifice his future for the present.

Before you are officially allowed to withdraw from your pension fund, you need to complete a few basic requirements. Perhaps the quickest loan release approval occurs for people who are facing a serious sickness or terminal diseases. With life threatening conditions and diseases, consumers may get up to 100% of the pension as long as there are no dependents involved.

Release is also granted for people with uniquely extreme financial difficulties. Payments for such reason may range from ?1000 to ?10,000. But in this case, you need to show a lot documentation to prove that you need the money right now.

If a consumer is temporarily incapacitated, he or she may qualify for a pension release as well. Similar to severe financial hardships, temporary incapacity requires extensive documentations to prove the occurrence. If because of his situation, a person is unable to maintain a degree of dignity in his living conditions, then he is eligible for pension release.

There are many companies that offer financial advice and analysis to determine if a pension release is the most ideal course of action for an individual. The best avenue is always to seek professional advice before making big financial decisions. With the help of professionals, you can take an objective stand regarding the best avenue you could take to assuage your problems.

You have to carefully analyze your decision and situation before opting for a pension release. Pensions ensure that you would live comfortably after your retirement after spending years of your life working. Always make sure to get objective advice on pension release so you know that you are making the best decision.

If you?re interested in getting some good and reliable tips on how to get the best advice on pension release, you can read it here for more information.

New 'stamping' process to pattern biomolecules at high resolution developed

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Fabricating precise biomolecular structures at extremely small scales is critical to the progress of nanotechnology and related fields.

Traditionally, one of the ways this has been accomplished has been through the use of rubber stamps with tiny features -- similar to those used by children in play, but detailed at the microscopic scale -- which are covered with molecular "inks" and then stamped onto substrate surfaces, creating a molecular patterns. But when using this technique at the nanoscale, molecules tend to diffuse on the surface both during and after stamping, blurring the patterns.

To address this problem, researchers at UCLA have turned this conventional "soft lithography" process on its head: Instead of using a stamp to transfer molecules onto bare surfaces, they have used chemically treated stamps to remove molecules already in place on gold substrates, essentially peeling away select molecules through chemical bonds to create precise patterns measuring just a few molecules across.

The new process, called chemical lift-off lithography (CLL), results in higher-resolution patterning and avoids the blurring problems of earlier techniques.

The findings are published Sept. 20 in the journal Science. The research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Kavli Foundation.

The stamp used in the new process is molded by using a "master" made with more sophisticated and expensive tools than those used in making rubber stamps for offices and children, but the stamps can be used over and over again. Between each use, they are simply reactivated by an oxygen plasma.

The chemical bonds formed at the stamp -- substrate interface are sufficiently strong to remove not only molecules in the monolayers but also one layer of gold atoms from the substrate. This observation settled a long-running discussion over whether, for such monolayers, gold-gold bonds break more easily than molecule-gold bonds -- they do, the researchers found.

The research team was able to fabricate a variety of high-resolution patterned features, and stamps were cleaned and reused many times with little feature deterioration. The remaining monolayer, they found, can act as a resist for etching exposed gold features. The backfilling of new molecules into the lifted-off areas enabled patterned protein capture, and sharp 40 nanometer chemical patterns were achieved.

Led by Anne Andrews and Paul Weiss, the UCLA team represents a collaboration among researchers from UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute, the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, and the departments of chemistry and biochemistry, materials science and engineering, and psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences.

Conventional nanolithographic patterning techniques, such as photolithography and electron-beam lithography, are expensive, time-consuming, require specialized equipment and instrumentation, and have limited capabilities for chemical patterning; here, they only need to be used for the fabrication of stamp master molds.

Once individual masters are produced, CLL is used for high-resolution, high-throughput, low-cost pattern fabrication. This method enables patterns to be transferred to underlying substrates, and multiple-stamping strategies can be used to produce high-fidelity nanometer-scale patterns on gold substrates, with the additional possibility of patterning different materials, such as silicon, germanium, platinum and graphene.

The patterns fabricated demonstrate that CLL not only transfers large-area, high-fidelity patterns, but the post-lift-off exposed gold areas are advantageous for producing multiplexed patterned surfaces for selective capture of biomolecules from complex mixtures.

EMarketer: Google to pass Facebook in display ads

(AP) ? Google is expected to surpass Facebook in display advertising revenue this year, beating all other competitors with a 15.4 percent share of the U.S. market, according to a closely followed research firm.

EMarketer said Thursday that it expects Google Inc. to generate $2.31 billion in revenue from online display ads ? the graphical advertisements people see on websites. Display ads are more lucrative than the text-based advertisements that appear next to search results and account for the bulk of Google's revenue.

The New York-based research firm predicts Facebook Inc. will hold 14.4 percent of the market this year with $2.16 billion in U.S. revenue.

In February, eMarketer predicted Facebook would stay ahead of Google. The social networking company had surpassed Google a year earlier. But Facebook's ad revenue has fallen short of the expectations it set in February, just months before its initial public offering.

Google, eMarketer said, is helped by strength in its advertising network, video ads on YouTube and AdMob, the mobile advertising service it bought in 2010. Facebook began showing mobile ads to users only as recent as this year.

In all, eMarketer expects the display advertisement market to grow 21.5 percent this year to nearly $15 billion in the U.S., helped by both Facebook and Google. By 2014, the two rivals are expected hold as much as 37 percent of the market, making it difficult for smaller players.

In 2011, Facebook had a 14.1 percent share of the $12.4 billion U.S. display advertising market according to eMarketer, above Google's 13.5 percent. A year earlier, though, Yahoo Inc. held the lead with 14 percent of the market. By 2014, eMarketer expects Yahoo's share to be half that. In the coming years, market share among former online powerhouses such as Yahoo, AOL and Microsoft is likely to decrease as Google and Facebook grow, according to eMarketer.

Facebook's stock slid 39 cents to $22.90 in morning trading. Google dropped $3.68 to $723.82.

Cancer? What cancer? Chavez's health off radar as vote nears

CARACAS (Reuters) - Just months ago, it was the issue dominating Venezuela and its presidential campaign. Now Hugo Chavez's bout with cancer is barely mentioned as his October 7 re-election bid approaches.

Once-frenetic rumors about Chavez's health have cooled to almost nothing while voters prepare to decide who will lead Venezuela - and control its vast oil reserves - for the next six years.

Chavez, a socialist firebrand known for lambasting the U.S. "empire," faces market-friendly challenger Henrique Capriles, a 40-year-old lawyer and state governor who has vowed to end the seizure of private businesses and create jobs by attracting private investment.

Chavez wants to deepen his self-styled revolution and says he is cured of cancer after three operations in Cuba since June 2011. But details of the cancer involved and the exact location of the tumors have remained secret to all but a few confidants, including Chavez's mentor, former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Chavez's health fell off the map as an electoral issue when it became clear in July that the 58-year-old ex-paratrooper was getting stronger and would almost certainly live at least until the October vote.

"He stopped talking about it and the opposition decided it would be better to win with a message of change and recovery than by talking about Chavez's health," said businessman Rafael Cubillan, 71, sipping a drink in a Caracas cafe.

"It would be better if voters had all the facts before they go to the polls," he added. "But Chavez comes from the vertical command structure of the military. He tells his troops only what they need to know to help him get the result he wants."

The president has ramped up his campaign schedule and appears healthy, if a bit bloated. His hair has grown back after chemotherapy caused him to go bald last year.

He is still not walking the streets much, preferring to appear on stage or on the top of a vehicle dubbed the "Chavez-mobile" in highly scripted rallies: a far cry from the coffee-swilling, barely sleeping, all-energy campaigner of the past.

But he is seen in public several times a day, kissing babies at campaign events and bursting into song during speeches that can run for hours, and are just as combative as ever.

'IN REMISSION'

Everyone, from voters in the Caracas slums to bondholders and executives of foreign oil companies drooling to tap into Venezuela's oceanic crude reserves, has been left in the dark as to Chavez's exact condition.

A Venezuelan medical source with knowledge of his treatment said the president had been declared "in remission" by his Cuban doctors after several rounds of radiotherapy.

"They keep giving him a lot of medication to accelerate his physical recovery, which is reflected in his mood and appearance," the source said.

Doctors say Chavez's declaration of full recovery is medically unsound, given that a couple of years would have to pass without a recurrence for it to be clear he was cured.

Many Venezuelan doctors suspect Chavez has been using steroids and other treatments to look and feel fitter and help him keep up the pace of his campaign. They say this could create more health problems if he pushes himself too hard.

If Chavez wins reelection, any sign of frailty would likely jump-start speculation about his health and succession scenarios, putting markets on edge.

Venezuela has the world's biggest oil reserves and its high-yielding sovereign bonds are some of the most heavily traded in the market. Its relationship with Colombia, with which it shares a long border rife with drug trafficking, is also key to the stability of the Andean region.

Chavez enjoyed a sympathy bounce in opinion polls when the issue of his health first came up, but with the election now less than three weeks away, he clearly feels that suggestions of physical frailty are not the way to win votes.

Asked about his health last week, Chavez brushed off the question, saying simply: "I'm fine, as you can see by looking at me." By contrast, he spent hours answering other questions, reflecting his desire to take attention away from the cancer.

Most of the best-known opinion polls put Chavez ahead, but voter surveys are notoriously controversial and divergent in Venezuela, and Capriles' numbers have been creeping up. A major pollster last week put him just ahead of Chavez.

Capriles is not touching the health question, other than to wish Chavez a speedy recovery, leaving investors and many voters hoping someone will leak the facts about the president's health.

"Where's the Julian Assange of Venezuela when you need him?" said Stephen Donehoo, a Latin American expert at Washington-based business consultancy McLarty Associates. Assange burst into the headlines in 2010 as the head of WikiLeaks, which caused a furor by publishing secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

"Venezuelans should have the right to know the state of health of the person who wants to lead them for the next six years, particularly with so much at stake," Donehoo said.

Final testing under way for Wyoming supercomputer

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ? Final testing is being done on a National Center for Atmospheric Research supercomputer on the outskirts of Cheyenne that will be used for climate modeling and other Earth sciences.

Research is expected to begin this fall on the new computer, called Yellowstone, which has enough power to rank among the top dozen or so fastest supercomputers in the world.

So how fast is it, exactly?

The computer will run at a speed of up to 1.5 petaflops, or 1.5 quadrillion operations per second. Put another way: If you counted one number per second, it would take a lot longer than your entire lifetime or anybody else's to get all the way up to 1.5 quadrillion. Try more than 47 million years.

The roughly $30 million IBM machine fills much of a 153,000-square-foot, custom-built facility.

The Boulder, Colo.-based National Center for Atmospheric Research already has lined up 11 initial research projects that will get time on its machine starting this fall, center spokesman David Hosansky said.

One of the upcoming projects will model air movement inside hurricanes and tornadoes. Another will examine how weather and air quality could change in North America in the years ahead.

First, the machine needs to pass its final tests. The process is more complicated than trying out a new laptop.

"These complex systems need extensive testing and analysis before we could formally accept it," Hosansky said Wednesday.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research hopes to wrap up testing and accept the supercomputer in October. A ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Gov. Matt Mead and National Science Foundation Director Subra Suresh is scheduled for Oct. 15.

The supercomputer is 30 times more powerful than the machine currently in use at the center's Mesa Laboratory in Boulder.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research has a long history of using supercomputers. One of the world's first, the Cray 1-A, crunched numbers at the center from 1977 to 1989. The Yellowstone supercomputer will be 9.7 million times faster with 3.4 million times the disk capacity and 19 million times the central memory size of the Cray 1-A, according to NCAR.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The Wyoming Legislature committed $21 million for the supercomputer project in 2007.

Here at TCC, we based our rankings of U.S. states on five criteria:?

  • Gas?prices
  • Miles driven per capita
  • Speed limits
  • Accident rate
  • Speeding tickets written

After crunching the numbers, we found Alaska to be the best state for drivers, followed by Utah, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.?

At the bottom: Louisiana, bested slightly by Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Now, the folks at?CarInsurance.com has done something similar. In generating their rankings, though, they've focused on the cost of?vehicle?ownership. Their four criteria are:

  • Number of miles driven
  • Cost of gasoline
  • Cost of insurance
  • Average income

Ultimately, the website's staff took all that data and created what they're calling the?Automotive Misery Index.

The least -- and most -- miserable states

If you live in the Northeast or the West, congratulations: those are some of the least miserable areas for drivers. CarInsurance.com rated?New Hampshire?as the best state, followed byAlaska,?Connecticut,?Colorado, and?Washington.

At the other end of the scale,?Mississippi?ranked as the most miserable place for drivers.?

How is that possible, given the fact that Mississippi boasts some of the cheapest gas in the U.S.? It's for two reasons, really.

For starters, Mississippians put an average of?20,424 miles on their odometers each year, which is more than?in almost any other state. (Wyoming residents are the only folks to best that total, with annual mileage averaging?22,543.)

But the key to Mississippi's rank is its income. While gas and?insurance?aren't exorbitantly pricey in the Hospitality State, they take a huge bite out of Mississippi's average income, which, at?$36,821, is the lowest on the list. (FYI, Mississippi is one of only three states with an average annual income below $40,000 -- the other two being its neighbors, Tennessee and Arkansas.)

Mississippi is joined at the bottom of the list by other states from the South and one from the Midwest. Coming in at #2 is?Oklahoma, followed by?Louisiana,?West?Virginia, and?Georgia.
