Baseball Cleanup is Home Run for Community

Warmer weather means sports are moving outdoors, and spring sports leagues are getting into gear.

One local baseball league is cleaning up before gearing up for a new season, hoping to spruce up one local park.

At Spring Lake Park, Thomas Miller and his friends spend Sunday afternoons practicing and picking up trash around the area. He explains, " It's just a love of the game, that's what brings us out here every week."

Getting the field ready, however, hasn't been a walk in the park. Miller described, "It was not the nicest field when we got here, so we had to build up the mound, and drag the field so it's not full of bumps so we can actually play the game."

Not only was prep work needed on the field, but around the entire park. Neighbors say litter accumulated through the winter with brisk winds and careless "snow sledders."

That's why Miller and his friends are stepping up to the plate to make the park look nice. He says the city only makes it out a couple times a year to beautify the park. Miller hopes their work will make the park welcoming to more users. "We picked up all the trash that was down here and around on the outfield, drug the field, we're trying to bring it out a little bit so we have the infield."

Miller and his friends put in hours of work Sunday, and in previous weekends. They have plans of continuing to clean up, leading up to their first game next Sunday, and keep fixing up the field. "We're going to put in the foul lines, I think line up the poles, finish building up the mound so it's not going to collapse every time we play on it."

Miller says it's worth the work knowing it helps the community.

"It's our TD Ameritrade."?
