Funeral parade set for S.C. visit

A longtime Charleston tradition moves next door as the Funeral Parade makes its way down D Street in South Charleston Sunday.

The parade, a longtime colorful tradition of the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta, continued during Labor Day weekend for a couple of years, but sponsors recently backed away. The city of South Charleston stepped up, and Bob Anderson of the city's convention and visitors bureau said 200 participants had registered by earlier this week.

The parade begins at 3 p.m. from 1st Avenue at D Street and continues down D Street with the River Rat Band leading the way.

The parade ends at the Mound with costume judging and more music by the River Rat Band, followed by the Dixieland Band. Sponsor Mardi Gras Casino & Resort will pass out 1,000 strands of beads during the parade.?
