Here's a rumor we haven't heard in a while: Apple might be working on a music streaming service.?This service would be similar to the popular Pandora, which allows users to create virtual radio "stations" which play music similar to a particular song, artist or genre.
The Wall Street Journal reports?that "people familiar with the matter" revealed that Apple is?"in talks to license music" for this music service.?According to those anonymous sources, Apple's service would certainly be available on iOS and OS X based devices and "possibly" work on Windows based computers.?
Not surprisingly, the Apple service is said not to?work on tablets and smartphones running Android.
While plenty of major music streaming services have incorporated custom radio features similar to those offered by Pandora (which seems to be the key example of such a music discovery engine), "Apple's outsize presence in online-music sales and massive installed base of MP3 players, smartphones, tablets and computers could make it a much more serious threat to Pandora than any of its current would-be rivals," as the folks at the Wall Street Journal point out.
The sources claim that Apple has "only recently" initiated talks about licensing agreements, so it could be a "matter of months" before the music service even launches. This means that we shouldn't expect to hear anything about the topic during Apple's Sept. 12 media event.
